1 CCW License Process Eligibility Requirements: Applicant must be 21 years of age or older. Applicant must be legally living in The United States. Applicant must have been a resident of OH for 45 days immediately preceding the date of application. Applicant must have been a resident of Summit County or an adjoining county for 30 days immediately preceding the date of application. Applicant must certify that he/she desires a legal means to carry a concealed handgun for defense of himself/herself or a member of his/her family while engaged in a lawful activity. Applicant cannot be a fugitive from justice. Applicant cannot be under indictment or charged or convicted of a felony or any narcotics, controlled substance, or dangerous drug violation. Applicant cannot have a conviction for assault if the victim of the assault is a peace officer. Applicant cannot have a conviction within the 3 years immediately preceding the application date for a misdemeanor offense of violence other than assault of a peace officer, resisting arrest, or possessing a firearm in a liquor premises. Applicant cannot have 2 or more convictions within the 5 years immediately preceding the application date for assault or negligent assault. Applicant cannot have a conviction within the 10 years immediately preceding the application 1 / 5

2 date for resisting arrest. Applicant cannot have been adjudicated as a mental defective, or committed to any mental institution, or is not under a adjudication for mental incompetence, or has not been found mentally ill by a court and subject to hospitalization, or is not an involuntary patient. Applicant cannot at the time of application be subject to a civil protection order, a temporary protection order, or a protection order issued from another state. ADDRESS CHANGE Per O.R.C Duties of licensed individual. (A) A concealed handgun license that is issued under section of the Revised Code shall expire five years after the date of issuance. A licensee who has been issued a license under that section shall be granted a grace period of thirty days after the licensee's license expires during which the licensee's license remains valid. Except as provided in divisions (B) and (C) of this section, a licensee who has been issued a concealed handgun license under section or of the Revised Code may carry a concealed handgun anywhere in this state if the licensee also carries a valid license and valid identification when the licensee is in actual possession of a concealed handgun. The licensee shall give notice of any change in the licensee's residence address to the sheriff who issued the license within forty-five days after that change. A competency certification that must have been issued within the 3 years immediately preceding the date of application (applicant must provide a copy of their training certificate). An actual CCW license replaces a competency certification for renewals. If renewing CCW and previous license is from another county, a copy of your training certificate would be appreciated. A certification that the applicant has read the safety pamphlet produced by the Ohio Peace Officers Training Commission. THE DEFINITION OF A COMPETENCY CERTIFICATION IS DEFINED AS ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: A certification of completion within the last 3 years of a firearms safety training course offered by the National Riffle Association that complies with the statutory requirements for its curriculum 3 / 5

4 A certification of completion within the last 3 years of a firearms safety training course that is open to the public that has qualified instructors offered by or under the auspices of a law enforcement agency A certification of completion within the last 3 years of a peace officer training school that is approved by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission A certification of completion within the last 3 years of a basic firearms training program that complies with statutory requirements Documentation that the applicant is currently an active reserve member of the armed forces of the United States and through their military training acquired weapons training equivalent to the training requirements required by O.R.C. ( (B)(3)(a),(b),(c),(e) or (f). Documentation that within the last 6 years the applicant was honorably discharged from the armed forces of the United States, and through their military training received firearms training as referenced in O.R.C.( (B)(3)(a),(b),(c),(e) or (f)., is a retired trooper with Ohio State Patrol, a retired peace officer or a retired federal law enforcement officer (For questions regarding proper documentation, please call ) An affidavit that attests to the applicant s satisfactory completion of a firearms safety course APPLICATION PROCESS: Upon receipt of an application for a license to carry a concealed handgun, the Sheriff will conduct a criminal records check and incompetency records check. Within 45 days of receipt of an application the Sheriff will issue a license to carry a concealed handgun or deny the application. Concealed handgun license that a sheriff issues under division (D)(1) of this section shall expire five years after the date of issuance If the application is denied, the Sheriff will indicate in writing the reasons for the denial. Upon denial, the applicant may proceed through an appeals process. Any false statements on a application for a license or renewal of a license or temporary emergency license is a felony of the fourth degree. 4 / 5

5 Any fictitious or altered document that purports to be a certification of the person s competence is a felony of the fourth degree. Any person who alters a license or creates a fictitious document that purports to be a license is a felony of the fifth degree.
