1 PAGE 1 SERVING SUNNYSIDE-WOODSIDE AND LONG ISLAND CITY VOL. 76, NO. 17 WOODSIDE, L.I.C., N.Y. 25 CENTS PARADE SEASON STARTS ANEW Story and Photos by Peter Ross, Assistant Director and Secretary, Sunnyside Drum Corps, Inc. April marked the beginning of the parade season for our neighborhood s Sunnyside Drum Corps. On Saturday, April 11th the Corps was seen once again in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn marching for the season opening parade of the Kings Bay Youth Organization s Little League Parade. Starting off on Avenue V the little leaguers, parents, and parade on-lookers were treated to the Corps music while our kids watched the multitude of boys and girls in their various teams uniforms file past the Corps honor line to the KBYO field off Coyle Street at the parade s end. Weather was perfect for a spring march. After the parade a stop to refuel was in order at the local Burger King. The following Tuesday, April 13th saw the Corps playing in front of their headquarters at All Saints Episcopal Church here in Sunnyside in order to motivate and drumup support from attendees of the Kiwanis Sunnyside Flag Day parade planning meet- ing. Various civic group, business, and community leaders met with parade organizers to help increase size and participation in the parade, purportedly the city s oldest and only flag day parade in the five bor- oughs, one which the Corps has been playing since its inception in 1977 by Joseph Sabba, Sherilyn Jo Sabba s Grandfather, who was also an organizer of the parade for ( Continued on Page 05 ) over 25 years. ASSEMBLYMAN GIANARIS PRAISES DOT REFUSAL TO EXEMPT AIRLINES FROM PASSENGERS BILL OF RIGHTS Upon hearing that federal Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood rejected the request of 5 airlines JetBlue, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, and US Airways for a temporary exemption from the new Airline Passengers Bill of Rights that went into effect on April 29, 2010, Assemblyman Michael Gianaris (D-Queens) stated, I am glad the Obama administration will not allow the airline industry to weasel its way out of its responsibilities to passengers. Now we can be sure that passengers will be treated like human beings and not like cargo. The airlines requested a temporary exemption citing JFK Airport s con- struction, but DOT rejected this request, as airlines have the ability reroute or reschedule flights. Exemptions are to be granted only for safety or security reasons, or if the air traffic controller deems it necessary. Airlines that violate the rule can face charges of up to $27,500 per passenger. Assemblyman Gianaris was the prime sponsor of a 2007 New York state law establishing the first-in-the-nation Airline Passengers Bill of Rights. Rather than complying with the law, the airline industry spent its money challenging the Bill of Rights in the courts, which eventually struck down New York s law on the grounds that the federal government has exclusive jurisdiction to regulate this issue. A HEARTFELT WORD FROM UNITED 40 S PRESIDENT, DON MCCALLAN Thousands of women and men are fighting, and some dying, to keep terrorism off our mainland and to protect the freedoms enjoyed in the United States of America available not only to all citizens but to immigrants and visitors. The proud and glorious red, white and blue - stars and stripes must be honored just as our forefathers did when our country was founded as America. June 12th is a Special Day to continue this patriotic practice. And yet, when it comes to marching 8 blocks, or riding because those legs aren t what they used to be, or being a spectator on Greenpoint Ave to cheer Old Glory, United Forties Meeting Guest Speaker- Mike Gianaris the marchers and spectators along the way get a little smaller each year. This, despite the valiant efforts of the Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside to keep this only Salute to the Flag parade in the borough and probably the entire city going strong for our vets, our people of all nationalities and last by not least, our country of freedom for all. U.F.C.A. has made a firm commitment to join in the fine work of the Kiwanians to make this year s parade great and we should start now. More at our May 13th meeting. Please spread the news! 3 PAGE 3 Assemblymember Michael DenDekker Sponsored First Blood Drive On April 10, 2010, the office of Assemblymember Michael DenDekker (D-Jackson Heights) sponsored its first Queens Blood Drive. Held at Monsignor McClancy High School in Queens, the event yielded 16 pints of life-giving blood for use by the New York Blood Center. Being a blood donor is an easy way of helping others, Queens Borough President Helen Marshall (C)and City Council members Elizabeth Crowley (second from right) and Eric Ulrich (R)were on hand, along with David Slavkin (L), representing Assemblyman Michael Miller, and Pat McCabe (second from left), representing Senator Joseph Addabbo, Tuesday, April 20th to announce funding from their offices that will allow displaced Woodhaven seniors to return to their community by renting space from the financially-ailing Woodhave-Richmond Hill Volunteer Ambulance Corps on Jamaica Avenue. Ms. Kathleen Dalbey (third from right) accepts symbolic check for $25,000 from Marshall for renovations at the corps headquarters. Additional funding of approximately $15,000 was provided by other elected officials. Others at the check presentation are Judy Kleve, a vice president of Catholic Charities, which operates the center, and Pat Critelli (left of Marshall), of Woodhaven Senior Center. The Woodhaven seniors had been temporaily transported to the Richmond Hill Center after the space they were in was needed by a local church. Assemblyman DenDekker said as he made his donation toward saving the lives of others. It s good to know that for every pint of blood collected, three lives can be saved. Participants in the blood drive were given a brief medical checkup, followed by a short training session. Trained personnel from the New York Blood Center were on hand to administer the examinations, and to take blood. On behalf of the New York Blood Center, as well as those whose lives will be saved through these blood donations, I d like to thank those Queens residents who turned out for this event. My hope is that next year we ll collect 30 pints - that would save 90 lives. With soft contact, other than the normal distortions from eyeglasses, it is very easy to interchange contacts and spectacles without any visual disturbances. Hard contacts pose a problem. After removing hard lenses, most people have difficulty seeing with glasses. This may last an hour or so. Also, your vision with glasses will vary depending on the time of day you wear them, and how long the contacts were in your eyes. Sunnyside Street Fair Vendors Wanted JUNE 12 th Call

CONTINUES TOUR OF SCHOOLS WITH VISIT TO P.S. 199 During a tour of P.S. 199, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer met with Principal Anthony Inzerillo and spoke with several classes and students who shared issues that they are concerned about. Among other things, the students shared the idea of cleaning neighborhood parks. One student asked if the school could come together to clean up Thomas Noonan Park, which the students refer to as Rainbow Park. As a result, Van Bramer is working together with Principal Inzerillo to organize a group that will clean up the park. CUTS RIBBON AT OPENING OF NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY PROCESSING CENTER IN LONG ISLAND CITY Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer spoke at the ribbon cutting for the newly renovated New York Public Library processing center in Long Island City. The processing center features a new sorting machine which is believed to be the largest in the world, with the capacity to sort 7,500 items an hour and reduce waiting time for requested items for up to a day. During lean economic times, when people need library services the most, projects that are able to increase the speed of services are imperative, said Jimmy Van Bramer. This processing center, while not open directly to the public, will greatly improve the services that library users receive by delivering items that library users have requested more quickly. Additionally, the center s location in Long Island City is yet another sign that Long Island City is becoming more and more of an attractive neighborhood for commercial, industrial, and residential purposes. TALKS ABOUT FUTURE OF LONG ISLAND CITY AT BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT COPORATION BREAKFAST Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer addressed a gathering of business leaders attending a breakfast hosted by the Long Island City Business Development Corporation. Van Bramer praised the members of the LICBDC for establishing a vibrant business community that is attracting new businesses as well as residents and cultural organizations. Van Bramer also spoke of his work helping to reduce the scheduled amount of time that weekend service cuts for maintenance on the 7 train would take place by three weeks, plans for the upcoming library at Hunters Point, and the systemic parking problem in Long Island City, which he is studying and for which he is drafting legislation that would cut down the number of hours that cars are allowed to park at Muni Meters from twelve hours down to four to encourage more turnaround. An emerging center of business, Long Island City, will soon be home to JetBlue s new headquarters. The New York Public Library also recently unveiled its new processing center located in Long Island City. QCA High School to Art School program (hs2as) Annual Student Exhibition held at the Queens Museum of Art On April 17, 2010 Queens Council on the Arts held its annual High School to Art School student exhibition at the Queens Museum of Art s Partnership Gallery. Charcoal drawings and mixed media work from students in grades 10, 11 and 12 were featured in the week-long exhibition. Highlights at the event included a check presentation of $5,000 from Bill Huisman, Executive Director of the Aviation Development Council, to help support hs2as, a unique portfolio development program for high school students that focuses on college preparation. The program, which serves a diverse multilingual group of students, has an extremely successful college acceptance rate with 2010 seniors granted admission to top art colleges and universities, including: Pratt Institute, SVA (School of Visual Arts), Parsons (Parsons The New School for Design), FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology), SUNY Purchase (Purchase College), NYU (New York University: Tisch School of the Arts and Steinhardt), RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art), SAIC (School of the Art Institute of Chicago)

WELCOME HOME REAL ESTATE Letters To The Editor The following letters are the opinions of its author and not necessarily those of the Woodside Herald. Dear Editor, I am writing this letter regarding the wall of graffiti on the Rite Aid Drugstore located at This eyesore has existed for many years- no one sees it anymore. What does it take to paint over it? As I walk around the neighborhood, I see businesses like Marabella s Pizza and Associated painting over graffiti- why doesn t the manager of Rite Aid? We cannot give up our neighborhoods to this plague. Now would be a good time to bring this to the notice of the management for two reasons: One is that both this store and the one further down the block is merging into one store. The second reason is that a new neighbor has moved in- Bank of America. Why should the new clean bank have a sloppy careless neighbor right across the street? Rite Aid has been here for years and we as a neighborhood keep them in business. It s time for them to give back. Sincerely, Scandi Khan

PLEASE READ THE SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT CAREFULLY. YOU SHOULD IMMEDIATELY CONTACT AN ATTORNEY OR YOUR LOCAL LEGAL AID OFFICE TO OBTAIN ADVICE ON HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The state encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid office, there are government agencies and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by the New York State Banking Department at BANK- NYS ( ) or visit the department s website at FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to save your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services NOTICE NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving a copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you can lose your home.
