ATTENDING were Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, Don McCallian for Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, Claudio Filomena from Mayor Bloomberg s office, Ricardi Calixle of Queens Economic Development Corporation, and Pinstos Topgay and Robert Kennedy of NYC Business Solutions. Joining property owners Maureen Offmiss, Ann Marie Rogers, Conrado Gomez, Dorothy Morehead (also on Community Board 2) and Lily Gavin and Gerald Lederman (both also Chamber of Commerce and Sunnyside Shines board members) were Joseph Conley and Debra Markell Klienert of Community Board 2. Contributing as well were Sunnyside Shines officers John Vogt, Artie Wiener (also property owner) and Patrice Lee (also business owner) and Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce President Ira Greenberg and board members Rebecca Barker, Dan Glasser, this author, and Chamber Marketing Director Luke Adams. Also present were Joe Kenton, Van Bramer s community liaison, Tara Glasser (business owner), and Wanda Santiago of Accion, the international micro lender. MODERATOR: Moderating the meeting was Ciaran Staunton, a successful businessman in Manhattan who is opening a new business, Molly Bloom at the site of Flynn s Bar, and who strongly advocates improving Sunnyside building façades. On July 1 st, 2010, the Queens Library kicked off its third annual Teen Book Slam. Directed by Vikki Terrile, Coordinator of Young Adult Services at the Queens Public Library and Abigail Goldberg, senior librarian and liaison for the program, the Book Slam was in for a marvelous time! This year, the Sunnyside Library enrolled the most Book Slam teens out of all participating libraries citywide with 10 newly energized and pumped up participants. It s a new era for voting in elections throughout New York State that is a result of the federal Help American Vote Act of 2002 which mandated that voters throughout America must have new voting systems in use no later than To help familiarize voters with the new system I have been working with the New York City Board of Elections over recent weeks to sponsor demonstrations of the new equipment at branches of the Queens Public Library and seniors, said the Assemblywoman. The system is simple to operate and people have been interested to try it out, but as with anything new, we can probably look forward to many challenges on election day as both poll workers and voters learn how to use it, added the Assemblywoman, and I hope these demonstrations will help make it easier for those who have been able to see it in action. The new equipment selected by New York, is a scanner made by Elections Systems & Software Inc. Voters have a privacy booth where they can mark their ballots and a magnifying sheet is provided for those who have vision challenges, The system also includes an AutoMARK ballot marking device which permits voters with disabilities to vote privately at every polling site using a touch screen, audio headphones, a Braille keypad and other methods. When you scan your paper ballot the system uses an optical scanner to record your vote from the marked paper ballot. At the end of the voting day, the device automatically tallies the votes and prints out the final results for poll work- Assemblywoman Margaret Markey and a Woodside Senior Center member try out new vote scanner when the NYC Board of Elections demonstrated the new voting system that will replace the old lever machines beginning with the upcoming September primary day. For additional information call Assemblywoman Markey s office at or go to Crossroads of the World To Be Lit In Honor Of Mother Teresa s 100th Birthday Times Square Businesses to illuminate lights on Broadway The Times Square Advertising Coalition announced today that the Great White Way will be lit Mother Teresa blue in honor and recognition of the inspirational woman. At 8:15 P.M on August 26th businesses in the Times Square area who plan to join in marking that special day include: The American Eagle Outfitters building, the largest sign in Times Square at 15,000 square feet on 46th and Broadway, The ABC Super Sign Walgreens Spectacular JPMorgan Chase LED sign at 3 Times Square. Christine C. Quinn will join business leaders at a lighting ceremony after a day of community volunteer events throughout the City in honor Mother Teresa s 100th birthday, including attending a noon mass at St. Patrick s Cathedral which will be celebrated by Archbishop Timothy Dolan. More than half the Members of the City Council will also participate in volunteer activities including, serving meals at soup kitchens and food pantries, clean up activities at city parks, and distributing school supplies to city school children. Visitors to Times Square on August 26th, will get a special chance to see the crossroads of the world are lit in honor of Mother Teresa, said City Council Speaker Christine C Quinn. We ask that New Yorkers consider spending some time that day volunteering at a soup kitchen, mentor a young person, visit a senior center or sign up at the City s volunteer website where you ll find many places in NYC where you can participate. As Chairwoman of the Assembly Education Committee, I know Race To the Top money will go a long way in helping New York renew and renovate our education system. Assembly members worked hard to come up with key legislation that would meet the test. With the leadership of Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and the guidance of State Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch, we worked together successfully to pass this complex legislation that allow us this win this money. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney applauded the U.S. Department of Education s announcement that New York is among the winners of Phase 2 of the Race to the Top program. New York is now eligible for up to $700 million in federal funding, in exchange for enacting education reforms such as adopting more stringent standards for student and teacher performance and increasing the number of charter schools. We urge our students to strive to be the best and our state led by example in reaching the winner s circle of the Race to the Top. New York s budget is stretched to the breaking point, so this $700 million federal investment in our students could not have come at a better time, said Rep. Maloney. As a former teacher, I can tell you that $700 million in federal funding, along with reforms to make our schools better, will be a huge benefit for generations of students to come. Community Group Commemorates September 11 th by Staging Large-Scale Graffiti Cleanup On Saturday, September 11, volunteers with the Sunnyside United Neighborhood Network (SUNN) will host a large-scale graffiti cleanup. Everyone is invited to participate in the event, in which teams of volunteers will clean or paint over graffiti on walls, store gates and public fixtures. Since 2002 SUNN s all-volunteer crews have kept a 40-block area of Sunnyside, Queens virtually graffiti free. Their strategy is simple: remove graffiti as soon as it appears so that the vandals get the message that their art is not tolerated. SUNN supplies the paint and supplies; volunteers from the community supply the elbow grease. SUNN President Tony Rohling remarks On September 11 our community will come together and build bridges by making Sunnyside a more beautiful place. For further information please call SUNN at Van Bramer Secures $205,250 for Senior & Youth Programs at Jacob Riis On Monday, August 23rd Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined seniors at the Jacob Riis Senior Center for a barbeque feast at Queensbridge. With musical tunes playing in the background, seniors had the opportunity to enjoy a delicious barbeque meal and celebrate the continuation of funding for their free senior lunch program. Council Member Van Bramer was pleased to secure $205,250 for various youth and senior initiatives at Jacob Riis this year, including the expansion of youth programs at Jacob Riis, increasing the free senior meal program and facility upgrades. ( continued from page 2) Mother Teresa s 100th Birthday The Broadway Association is delighted to help paint the town blue tonight in honor of a frequent visitor to New York and a friend to all New Yorkers, Mother Teresa, as a reminder to live, love and be kind to others, Cristyne Nicholas, Broadway Association Chair. Several iconic New York landmarks have also offered to light up in their properties in honor of Mother Teresa s birthday including the U.S.S. Intrepid and Brooklyn s Borough Hall. What made this particular happy hour special is that there was a real purpose behind it. Lead by Vinny Renda and James Arbona, Happy Hour With Purpose (HHWP) held their first event at Firewater Inn on Skillman Ave. A portion of the proceeds went to fund The Boy s & Girls Club of Sunnyside & Woodside.There is a shared, growing concern in our community that children don t have the same resources that previous generations we re afforded. HHWP is thinking beyond the basketball courts and crafting multi dimensional programs with the help of a powerful volunteer committee. Our culture of fast paced information could be our futures biggest asset, if channeled correctly. HHWP believes we need a structure setting to equally guide both the basketball players and scientist of tomorrow. Singh The slammers included Miao Ru Guan (age 14), who was the only Book Slammer ever to earn a perfect score for two consecutive years in 2008 and 2009; Sanya Goswami (age 13), who earned 5 th place in 2008 and had a perfect score in 2009; Abeda Alam (age 14), fifth and fourth placer in 2008 and 2009 respectively; Fathema Ahmed (age 14) who earned 4 th place in 2009; Sahil Goswami (age 18), 9 th placer in 2009; and finally Tasfia Addrita (age 13 and youngest Book Slammer), Araceli Flores (age 15), Danny Li (Age 14), Elizabeth Yi (age 14), and Tahmina Hussain (age 15), who were all 1 st year Book Slammers! It comes not as a surprise that from , the Sunnyside Library Book Slammers earned the highest scores citywide because one could really see the determination and joy these teens derived from reading a good novel. After speaking with fellow Book Slam participant, Fathema Ahmed, it was revealed that she joined the Book Slam because it was fun, and because of all the thrilling events that went along with the program. When asked how reading affects who she is as a person, Ms. Ahmed replied, It makes me smarter, and I always learn something new with every book. In addition, the Book Slam had been especially challenging for some of the participants because Ramadan was taking place at the same time as the program. One of the contestants exposed her hardship with staying away from temptation because she would see advertisements for local fast-food joints all over the neighborhood. This goes to show what endurance the teens possessed and the perseverance they had to achieve their goals. Some of the many books on the Book Slam s list included: Flush, by Carl Hiaasen; The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins; Graceling, by Kristin Cashore; and The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks, by E. Lockhart. Every year, there is a set limit of books that every Book Slammer has to read. However, this year, new rules were brought into play. The contestants were given the option to read eight books instead of five to earn an extra credit bonus. The extra books were mostly sequels to the original novels. These books consisted of: Catching Fire, by Suzanne Collins (sequel to The Hunger Games); Fire. by Kristin Cashore (sequel to Graceling); and The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing II: The Kingdom on the Waves, by T.A. Anderson (sequel to The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing I: The Pox Party). The additional books definitely helped motivate the teens to do their very best and delve into the wonderful world of literature! Conclusively, it has been proven that the Queens Teen Book Slam is a remarkable program which allows teens to fulfill their hobby of reading. The strength of mind that the participants encompass is extremely meritorious, and with that being said, they have earned the deep respect that they deserve. Local Pro-Business Pow-wow Unites Sunnyside by Patricia Dorfman ( continued from front page ) To start the discussion, he held aloft the Sunnyside Chamber s poster featuring NEW YORK MAGAZINE April 19 cover featuring Sunnyside as the #3 most livable neighborhood in NYC, #1 in Queens, and brought anonymous photographic examples of Sunnyside storefronts both appealing and needing improvement. Staunton, keenly interested in the impact on Sunnyside business, both pro and con, that store appearance has, urged more compliance with laws already on the books in regard to awnings, metal gates and exterior signage. James Bray, Executive Director of the Sunnyside Shines, agreed to work as liaison for a community-wide joint effort and took notes on flip chart to make sure to include all concerns and suggestions. PINPOINTING THE PROB- LEM: A spirited discussion of the reason for the growing number of vacant spaces and the occasional raffish storefront made it clear that there are no easy villains. Excellent graffiti response from the city and local groups have improved the look of Sunnyside not withstanding the marks on the upper floor levels which takes longer to address. Many storeowners are unaware of the gate and awning laws. Property owners have had their real estate taxes increase 100 per cent in the past 10 years, often in the face of a disparity between what the city decides a property is worth and the realistic cost of attracting and keeping a paying tenant in place. New businesses may not have enough capital or income to get them through lean times and often begin with no accurate assessment of the market. And even prudently conceived and imaginatively marketed firms face hard times with diminished consumer spending. Out-of-area real estate brokers and managers whose only task is to get a dependable paying tenant for an owner have no reason to consider community concerns. And all of us cry for local spending but then drive to shopping centers elsewhere or order online, forgetting that every purchase not made here has a negative impact on local jobs and prosperity. NETWORKING SOLU- TIONS: Gerald Lederman recommended two services for property owners who may post their vacant spaces up without charge (brokers must pay) on two websites, CoStar.com and LoopNet.com, to reach an international audience of prospective lessees. Robert Kennedy suggested Sunnyside Shines enhance its website database of vacant properties. The ease of the Internet to reach the rest of the world has improved chances of telling the world why Sunnyside is an excellent choice for a business. John Vogt suggested sending a representative to ICSC (International Council of Shopping Centers) to get the word out about opening one s business here. Rebecca Barker mentioned one of the recent trade shows where she and Luke Adams manned a booth has resulted in five entrepreneurs looking into Sunnyside as a business location. So while Sunnyside shares many vacancies with the rest of NYC, our present situation will be eased if we all work together to further make Sunnyside the destination it already is for many. More restricted awnings are already the law, and metal gates must be 70 percent vacant space by July 1, Several suggested welcome basket for new businesses, containing coupons, local laws and ordinances facts, and resources, an idea on which Sunnyside Shines is already working. A suggestion was put forth to put property management and rentals in the hands of a local firm as a way to make better matches between stores and the spending public. FOOT TRAFFIC APPEAL: Using vacant storefronts for art exhibits and a vacant lot for a regular crafts or flea market was suggested, an approach with success in other areas of NYC. John Vogt suggested as was done in the past, enlisting the assistance of LaGuardia College graphics students to create enhanced façade designs for businesses without funds to hire designers. Sunnyside Shines has already vastly improved our downtown experience with increased sanitation, security and holiday lights. HELP WITH HOMEWORK: It is common knowledge the personality that makes a successful entrepreneur is also often one who needs a steadying hand and advice the most. Making use of the free city and federal agencies to find the trouble spots in advance in a business plan was strongly suggested. And advice is not just for new business! All of us can partake of good, free advice. Laguardia.nyssbdc.org and NYC.gov.nycbusiness offer free services such as website assistance, business plan and legal assistance and can advise entrepreneurs on the feasibility of loans. Lenders have no motivation to loan money to an entrepreneur who over borrows, has no track record, has no collateral, or whose revenue projections are without solid foundation. Sunnyside is already on the radar among younger residents of NYC. Join the Chamber of Commerce. Pitch in personally in to get us all through this rough patch. With our proximity to Manhattan, ease of transportation, wonderful restaurants, and friendly, neighborhood feel, much of what Sunnyside business can do to help itself costs nothing but self-awareness, pride of place, and neighbor helping neighbor. WHAT WE CAN ALL DO RIGHT NOW: How much did you spend locally today and how much did you spend elsewhere or online? Shop locally! When you need food or a gift or a service, patronize a local store. Stumped for a gift? Why not a gift certificate even a grocery certificate would be welcome these days. When your children need jobs in the neighborhood, we need strong businesses to hire them. We all call upon our merchants to donate to local causes which cannot happen if they are having trouble paying their costs. If you are a landlord, rather than lose a hardworking tenant, perhaps renegotiate a lease. The gathering was exploratory and the first meeting of many to come. RESPONSE TO It s That Simple from Woodside Herald issue 8/20 Dear Editor, The issues in last week s It s That Simple are sophomorically oversimplified, and the author, Al Volpe, draws exactly the wrong conclusions. The excuse that Arizona is simply trying to enforce an immigration law that the federal government will not is bunk. Arizona s hostile new law, SB1070, aims to create attrition of a large number of illegal immigrants by pursuing immigration enforcement at any cost and would harm minorities, citizens and non-citizens alike. In late July, federal Judge Susan ABOVE NAMED DEFENDANTS: YOU ARE HEREBY SUMMONED to answer the complaint in this action, to serve a copy of your answer, or, if the complaint is not served with the summons, to serve notice of appearance, on the plaintiffs attorney within (20) days after the service of this summons, exclusive of the date of service (or within thirty (30) days after the service is complete if this summons is not personally delivered to you within the State of New York), and in case of failure to appear or answer, judgment will be taken against you by default for the relief demanded in the complaint. Plaintiffs designate Queens County as the place of trial. The basis of venue is the location of the subject property. NOTICE YOU ARE IN Bolton struck down most of this new law because a state cannot have its own immigration policy, and because many elements of Arizona s law are inconsistent with federal law. Building another (two already exist in the neighborhood) mosque nearby Ground Zero is understandably uncomfortable, but it would send a powerful message to the world that everyone, including Muslims, enjoy freedom of religion in America even when it is uncomfortable. The Muslim leadership associated with the proposed mosque should also recognize that the 9/11 attacks were carried out in the name of Islam, albeit by a small fanatical subset. This is an opportunity for dialog and statesmanship between the leaders from both sides. With this approach, rather than steadfast opposition, a mutually acceptable solution is possible. Simple? Not a chance. Getting unemployment down to DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving a copy of the answer on the attorney for the tax lien holder who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you can lose your home. Speak to an attorney or go to the court where your case is pending for further information on how to answer the summons and protect your property. Sending a payment to the tax lien holder will not stop this foreclosure action. YOU MUST RESPOND BY SERVING A COPY OF THE ANSWER ON THE ATTORNEY FOR THE PLAINTIFF (TAX LIEN HOLDER) AND FILING THE pre-recession levels must continue to be a top priority for the United States. The Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board estimates that all of the $787 billion in stimulus funds have been allocated, with 64% already paid out. There is not, as Mr. Volpe states, an unspent $400 billion waiting for a deserving infrastructure project. Investing in the right infrastructure projects, as well as finding innovative ways to grow the country s gross domestic product, needs to be part of the U.S. job growth strategy. A Mexican wall would neither provide a longterm economic benefit nor a good immigration solution. Beware of oversimplification.
