DVRP advocates work one-on-one with women who are in past or present abusive relationships to ensure that they are informed about their rights and the available resources. The overall goal of the program is to increase access to resources and improve the safety of A/PI survivors of domestic violence, regardless of income level, immigration status, and English language proficiency. DVRP advocates can provide peer support, assistance with safety planning, interpretation and translation services, court accompaniment, emergency transportation, financial empowerment and life skills development, assistance in applying for public benefits, shelter, legal and social services referrals, and other supportive services. Hispanic Committee of Virginia (HCV) Locations Vary Phone: HCV provides support services to Hispanic immigrants throughout Northern Virginia. Among the services offered are case management, job matching, and immigration consultations. HCV has a bilingual, bicultural staff of 35, representing more than 14 Spanish-speaking countries throughout Latin America and the United States and counts on 1
2 the help of a diverse group of volunteers in running the many programs. Because of the background and training of staff, services are not denied to anyone in need although the organization specializes in Hispanic services. Among the services provided are job training and related employment services, a selfhelp housing program, support for individuals with the immigration process including assistance with completion of required forms, information and referral, interpretation/translation services for the Hispanic/Latino community members, tax preparation, and voter registration assistance. Services are provided in a variety of languages including English, Spanish, Farsi, Hindi, French, Vietnamese, and Korean, and include: Diagnostic services, treatment, Home-based counseling, Medicaid intensive inhome services, Sex offender assessment and treatment, Substance abuse assessment and treatment. Our staff members have lived and studied in many different countries, speak a variety of languages, and bring a wealth of experience and expertise to their presentations. Program formats include panel presentations and facilitated discussions customized to meet the needs of the audience. Our clients include schools, businesses, and community groups. Multicultural panels typically include people from African, Asian, European, Hispanic, and Middle Eastern heritages. A 90- minute presentation includes time for audience questions and discussion. CASE MANAGEMENT VA Develops case plans for the evaluation, treatment, and/or care of individuals who, because of age, illness, disability, or other difficulties, are unable to arrange for services on their own behalf. Assesses the individual's needs then coordinates the delivery of needed services and ensures that services are obtained in accordance with the case plan. Follow up and monitoring of client's progress is integral. Assistance is offered in the person's native language and the focus is targeted towards those who may be incapacitated. Child care, training, transportation, and legal matters are just a few of the areas where a person may receive assistance. Services are offered in over 30 languages, Provides educational and counseling programs for individuals referred by the courts for driving under the 5
6 ALCOHOL/DRUG ABUSE COUNSELING influence of alcohol or other drugs. Classes are conducted in the language of the participants and cover such topics as the legal, health, and psychological consequences of alcohol and other drug use. Also serves other clients with substance abuse problems. Multicultural Housing Counseling Assists low and moderate income families (particularly those facing language and cultural obstacles) identify, secure and maintain safe, appropriate and affordable housing in Fairfax County. Multicultural Domestic Violence Counseling Offers group and individual therapy for individuals who have been abusive to their mates. Sessions focus on helping participants understand the dynamics of abusive behaviors and learning more effective ways of coping with stress and anger. TRAINING & CONSULTATION Training and consultation on crosscultural issues is available for individuals, groups, and organizations. Group training is tailored to the specific needs of the audience by experienced presenters and can include such subjects as cross-cultural case management, mental health, education, and administration. Case consultation services can be arranged for schools, mental health clinics, businesses, and public agencies which deal with diverse cultures. Human Rights Equality Programs Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, Va Equity Programs Division provides programs and services including training, mediation, investigation, diversity awareness, statistical reporting and community liaison. Equity Programs investigates county employment discrimination complaints as well as citizen allegations of discriminatory treatment by County agencies. 6
