3 Orphaned Herbert Born August 10, 1874 in West Branch Iowa Father died from heart disease when he was 6 Mother died from pneumonia when he was 9 Moved to Oregon to his maternal aunt and uncle Heavily quaker Impacted his style Made him slightly stand out during presidency

4 At Stanford Studied Geology at Stanford University in California Became a mining engineer Became internationally known for his gold and coal findings in China and Australia Accumulated a small fortune Personal net worth by 1914 was 4 Million

5 Rise to Presidency

6 The Boxer Rebellion The Society of the Rightous and Harmonous Firsts (Boxers) attacked chinese christians and forigners Herbert Hoover helped rescue captured foreigners

7 Commission for Relief in Belgium Because France was allied with Russia, Germany declared war on France Germany took over Belgium to get to France Britain declared war on Germany because of alliance with Belgium Set up a blockade to starve German soldiers Starved 7 million Belgian people instead

8 Commission for Relief in Belgium Herbert Hoover started the Commission for Relief in Belgium The US was still neutral in the war Hoover was considered a negotiator with all countries to aid Belgium First ship brought 1018 tons of wheat rice beans and peas for Belgium Coordinated with Belgian officials to ensure all the food was given to starving citizens

9 Commission for Relief in Belgium 3 billion dollars were spent sending food Loans were taken out from Belgians and French people Abandoned during the Great Depression

10 US Food Administrator With seeing these efforts Woodrow Wilson appointed Hoover as the US Food Administrator Widely supported for Wheatless and meatless days to send most of those goods to American soldiers Exports also went to other famished countries Hooverize To save food

11 Post WW I Went to Europe to startup the American Relief Association Served as an adviser with Wilson which drafted the Versailles treaty Aided Germany and Austria in 1919 despite war disputes Twenty million people are starving. Whatever their politics, they shall be fed. - Hoover in concerns to Russian relief

12 Secretary of Commerce 1920 Hoover tried to run for president but was blocked Instead remained as the secretary of Commerce Unified 100 different organizations and put them all under the same regulations In hope to reduce waste in the American system

13 Mississippi Flood Used his governmental position to aid the Mississippi victims Broadcasted through the radio to ask for american donations Sent out ships with goods directly to the people Assembled tent cities for refugees Went to actual site to inspect the situation

25 OPCVL Origin: newspaper from Iowa City, Iowa which was published on November 4th, 1927 Purpose: to inform the public on who won the 1928 election Smith Concedes Defeat; Landslide Buries His Hopes Value: The newspaper demonstrates the excitement citizens from Iowa had toward his future presidency HOOVER WINS! Limitation: Style could just be there to sell the newspaper [Hoover face on the name HOOVER ]
