3 PLACARD B Airport Security After 9/11, airports across the country increased security measures. One procedure that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) implemented was the pat-down. Travelers had to undergo a pat-down if they triggered a metal detector or AIT unit or refused AIT screening. Here an airport security officer conducts a physical search on a senior citizen. I m completely appalled by this, one woman wrote. What happened to our right to privacy? Has Homeland Security forgotten our rights because they think it s going to stop terrorists? 7 PLACARD D Iraqi Government This Iraqi woman is voting in her first election, held on December 15, Voters emerged from the polls with a stained finger, a method used to ensure that people could not vote more than once. Democracy cannot be shipped to Iraq on a tanker of a C-5A. It is a homegrown construct, which must flow from the will of the people involved the more the United States tries to force what it insists on calling democracy on Iraq, the more the people of Iraq will hate the United States, and even, perhaps the name of democracy. 9 PLACARD E Identifying Illegal Immigrants In 2010, the state of Arizona enacted controversial immigration law SB 1070, which allowed members of law enforcement to detain anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant. Although proponents argued that the law was necessary to protect citizens, critics such as this protester believed that the law relied on racial profiling to identify undocumented immigrants. The law protects all of us, every Arizona citizen and everyone here in our state lawfully. And, it does so while ensuring that the constitutional rights of ALL in Arizona are undiminished holding fast to the diversity that has made Arizona so great. Roving wiretaps and access to business records are critical tools used by our intelligence and law enforcement communities, but which require careful oversight. Democratic representative Jane Harmon, on the 2011 extension of the Patriot Act, Washington Post, February 8, 2011 We passed the PATRIOT Act and said, come and take our liberties, make us safe.
