Detention camps in Guantánamo still held prisoners in We should ensure that those individuals who harbor intelligence that may threaten the United States, and those that have wantonly killed Americas and others, are not released. Republican senator George Voinovich, responding to the Supreme Court verdict in Hamdan v. Rumsfeld, June 29, 2006 The Supreme Court has made clear that the executive branch does not have a blank check in the war on terror and may not run roughshod over the nation s legal system. 3 PLACARD B Airport Security After 9/11, airports across the country increased security measures. One procedure that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) implemented was the pat-down. Travelers had to undergo a pat-down if they triggered a metal detector or AIT unit or refused AIT screening. Here an airport security officer conducts a physical search on a senior citizen. I m completely appalled by this, one woman wrote. What happened to our right to privacy? Has Homeland Security forgotten our rights because they think it s going to stop terrorists? CNN, November 12, 2010 We re not changing the policies, because of the risks that have been identified, [TSA administrator John] Pistole said on CNN s State of the Union. We know through intelligence that there are determined people, terrorists who are trying to kill not only Americans but innocent people around the world. 5 PLACARD C Department of Homeland Security Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano (left) introduced the new National Terrorism Advisory System, which included the If You See Something, Say Something campaign that relied on citizens to report suspicious activities. In today s threat environment more than ever we know that our security is a shared responsibility and the best security strategy is one that gets the public involved. That s why the Department of Homeland Security is focused on strengthening our country s defenses by getting all stakeholders including the public the information and resources they need in order to play their part in helping to secure the country. 7 PLACARD D Iraqi Government This Iraqi woman is voting in her first election, held on December 15, Voters emerged from the polls with a stained finger, a method used to ensure that people could not vote more than once. Democracy cannot be shipped to Iraq on a tanker of a C-5A. It is a homegrown construct, which must flow from the will of the people involved the more the United States tries to force what it insists on calling democracy on Iraq, the more the people of Iraq will hate the United States, and even, perhaps the name of democracy. Jonathan Schell, How to Get Out of Iraq, The Nation, May 24, 2004 Iraq s political leaders have worked together to agree on an inclusive government that represents the will of the Iraqi people and moves their country forward. Today s coalition decision is a milestone in the emergence of the new Iraq and it is a testament to the determination of the Iraqi people to build their own democracy, a goal only they can achieve. Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, Press Statement on the Iraqi Government Coalition Agreement, November 12, 2010 Teachers Curriculum Institute 9/11 and Its Aftermath: Debating America s Founding Ideals 7

9 PLACARD E Identifying Illegal Immigrants In 2010, the state of Arizona enacted controversial immigration law SB 1070, which allowed members of law enforcement to detain anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant. Although proponents argued that the law was necessary to protect citizens, critics such as this protester believed that the law relied on racial profiling to identify undocumented immigrants. The law protects all of us, every Arizona citizen and everyone here in our state lawfully. And, it does so while ensuring that the constitutional rights of ALL in Arizona are undiminished holding fast to the diversity that has made Arizona so great. Arizona State Governor Jan Brewer, on SB 1070, July 28, 2010 And I want everyone, American and Mexican, to know my administration is taking a very close look at the Arizona law. We re examining any implications, especially for civil rights. Because in the United States of America, no law-abiding person be they an American citizen, a legal immigrant, or a visitor or tourist from Mexico should ever be subject to suspicion simply because of what they look like. President Barack Obama, Joint Press Conference, May 19, 2010 Teachers Curriculum Institute 9/11 and Its Aftermath: Debating America s Founding Ideals 9

11 PLACARD F The USA Patriot Act These protesters rallied against the renewal of the Patriot Act in President Obama extended the Patriot Act again in I am reluctantly supporting the extension of the PATRIOT Improvement and Reauthorization Act of 2005 because I do not think the FISA provisions should lapse. Roving wiretaps and access to business records are critical tools used by our intelligence and law enforcement communities, but which require careful oversight. Democratic representative Jane Harmon, on the 2011 extension of the Patriot Act, Washington Post, February 8, 2011 We passed the PATRIOT Act and said, come and take our liberties, make us safe. We have to protect what we read, to protect what we view, to protect what where we go and who we associate. We shouldn t allow government to patrol willy-nilly through millions of records.
