The class begins with a discussion of the contemporary phenomenon of migration in the context of a global age of migration. We continue with a political history of immigration in America from the colonial era to the 21 st century. We examine laws and politics, changes in sending nations, migrant demographics, and varying immigrant receptions. The next section discusses the politics of immigration, including contemporary and classic debates, integration and acculturation, security and enforcement, economics, and transnationalism. We then discuss a Europe changing from nations of migrants to nations of immigrants, along with migration in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The course concludes by considering refugee policies and the religious dynamics in migration.

Emergency Evacuation Policy * Occupants of buildings on The University of Texas at Austin campus are required to evacuate buildings when a fire alarm is activated. Alarm activation or announcement requires exiting and assembling outside. * Familiarize yourself with all exit doors of each classroom and building you may occupy. 3 Assignments Student understanding of the readings and topics will be assessed in a variety of ways, as noted below. Course Grade Exams: There will be three exams. Exam #1 (20% of course grade): Identifications, essays, and multiple choice questions; covers first third of class) Exam #2 (30% of course grade): Identifications, essays, and multiple choice questions; covers second third of class) Exam #3 (30% of course grade): Identifications, essays, and multiple choice questions; covers last third of class and includes cumulative questions) Book review (20% of course grade): The choice of book is open, but it must address immigration policy or politics. Guidelines on how to write the review will be discussed in class. Instructor must approve your choice of book no later than Tuesday, April 4. Reviews are due on Thursday, May 4, our last class day. Extra credit: To further the research and teaching missions of UT, students might be able to participate in academic public opinion surveys during the semester (depending on availability). These will be used for research and teaching purposes by department faculty and graduate students and will be conducted either online or in the Department of Government survey lab. They are confidential, so I will only know if you took a survey, not your answers. Class attendance: This is not used in determining your course grade.
