6 CONTAMINATION EXTENSION Great quantity of explosive remnants of war (ERW) Different construction, size, origin Unexploded cluster bomblets and aerial bombs Ammunition depots explosion
7 CONTAMINATION EXTENSION ERW poses immediate threat for population and environment slow down construction works make impossible exploitation of cultivable land may cause certain legal and political problems
8 CONTAMINATION EXTENSION The extent of ERW contamination has not been precisely determined yet It is necessary to develop: General Study of ERW contamination Technical Study for each microlocation contaminated with ERW
9 CONTAMINATION EXTENSION Based on type and period of occurrence as well as the threat level we divided ERW into the following categories:
10 CONTAMINATION EXTENSION 1. CLUSTER BOMBS 30,000,000 square meters contaminated Several dozens of civil and military micro locations General Survey of civil locations in 2008 REPUBLIC OF SERBIA Cluster bombs location map
11 CONTAMINATION EXTENSION After NATO bombing specialized Teams from SAF, Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Defence removed and destroyed unexploded cluster munitions from ground surface on almost all contaminated locations NGO NPA has finished General Survey of civil locations in 2008 and published the results General Survey of military locations has not been conducted yet
12 CONTAMINATION EXTENSION 2. AREIAL BOMBS AND PROJECTILS Over 123 unexploded aerial bombs Over 100 civil and military locations No survey has been done REPUBLIC OF SERBIA Aerial bombs location map
13 CONTAMINATION EXTENSION After NATO bombing specialized Teams from SAF and Ministry of Defence dig, deactivated, removed and destroyed over than 120 unexploded bombs from NATO bombing on 53 civil and military locations Specialized Teams from Ministry of Defence neutralized 19 aerial bombs from WWII
14 CONTAMINATION EXTENSION 3. AMMUNITION DEPOTS EXPLOSION REPUBLIC OF SERBIA Ammo depots location map square meters contaminated 12 locations
15 CONTAMINATION EXTENSION Specialized Teams from SAF and Ministry of Defence removed and destroyed over pieces of UXO so far In Paracin Municipality, after big explosion of ammo depot, specialized Teams from SAF cleaned ground surface and conducted underground searching on over than square meters Russian Agency EMERCOM has started underground searching in April 2009
16 CONTAMINATION EXTENSION 4. COMBAT ACTIVITIES IN WWI AND WWII Locations contaminated with UXO and AXO from large combat activities during WWI and WWII No survey has been done REPUBLIC OF SERBIA Combat act. location map

WATER COURSES AND LAKES Different categories of ERW from WWII and NATO bombing No General Survey has been done In the Danube River 7 aerial bombs and projectiles have been found after NATO bombing 6,000,000 EUR from European Agency for Reconstruction for Survey and neutralization of ERW on 12 locations in the Danube River
18 INSTITUTIONAL SET UP Responsibility for solving ERW problems lies with Ministry of Defence.. The obligations by law are fulfilled in cooperation with following units of Ministry and the institutions of Republic of Serbia: MoD Department for Emergency Situations SAF Mine Action Centre Domestic and foreign commercial companies
19 INSTITUTIONAL SET UP All tasks related to ERW are being done under: Defence Act of the Republic of Serbia International Standards Military Standards and Manuals
20 INSTITUTIONAL SET UP National Standards have not been developed yet After the National Standards are developed precise strategy, procedures and competences will be set up
21 CLEREANCE Operational capacities for ERW clearance: MoD specialized Teams SAF specialized Teams Commercial companies registered for humanitarian demining
22 REQUEST FOR THE ANALYSIS OF NEEDS Before the implementation of ERW Projects it is necessary to develop an overall Study
23 REQUEST FOR THE ANALYSIS OF NEEDS ERW Project is intended for clearing the whole territory of the Republic of Serbia from ERW Exact size of contaminated area is unknown Exact number of ERW is unknown General Survey has not been conducted on all locations
