1 24 August 2017 Invitation: Cites in Global Agendas Promoting the role of cities in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda 17 October 2017, Bern, Switzerland Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear colleagues and partners, It is our great pleasure and honour to invite you to participate in an event jointly organized by the Cities Alliance and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation entitled Cities in Global Agendas Promoting the role of cities in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda. The event will take place on Tuesday, 17 October 2017, from 14:00 to 18:00 at the Federal Palace of Switzerland located at Bundesplatz 3, Bern, Switzerland. It will be followed by a networking reception hosted by the Mayor of Bern, Mr. Alec von Graffenried. On the one-year anniversary of the New Urban Agenda of Habitat III, the planned event will gather Cities Alliance members, the Swiss development community as well as partners from local governments and civil society to discuss the role of cities in realizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and other global agendas. The event will serve participants as a platform to share experience, learn from strategic approaches and expand their network of relevant partners. In light of SDC s recent membership of the Cities Alliance, the event provides an excellent opportunity for Cities Alliance and SDC to foster synergies between their respective endeavours to promote the role of cities for sustainable development. Through its Joint Work Programme on Habitat III, Cities Alliance has facilitated strategic advocacy in the lead-up to Habitat III, which took place in Quito Ecuador from October One year after the adoption, the Cities Alliance JWP on Habitat III seeks to support members and partners in sharing approaches, exchanging tools and collaborating towards the integrated implementation, follow-up and review of the New Urban Agenda and the SDGs in and within cities. Within a wider process on the future position of SDC in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a number of SDC thematic networks are currently leading a Learning Journey on Urban and Peri-urban Development Dynamics with view to identifying potential avenues for SDC in the area of sustainable urban development. 4 24 August 2017 Invitation: Migration and Cities Inception workshop of the Cities Alliance Joint Work Programme on Migration and Cities 18 October 2017, Bern, Switzerland Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear colleagues and partners, It is our great pleasure and honour to invite you to participate in a workshop jointly organized by the Cities Alliance and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation entitled Migration and Cities Inception workshop of the Cities Alliance Joint Work Programme on Migration and Cities. The workshop will take place on Wednesday, 18 October 2017, from 8:30 to 16:00, at the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) located at Freiburgstrasse 130, Bern, Switzerland. Migration and Cities has been identified as a new pillar for the forthcoming Cities Alliance Strategic Plan In line with its own strategic priority on urban migration, SDC has recently joined the Cities Alliance as a new member. In order to promote the role of cities for migration, SDC and Cities Alliance propose to establish a multi-year Joint Work Programme on Migration and Cities. The workshop on 18 October 2017 will bring together Cities Alliance members as well as international and Swiss partners with relevant experience on migration and development with a particular focus on the role of cities. The workshop will explore the prospective thematic contours, potential approaches and innovative instruments through which the Joint Work Programme could support cities to meet global commitments on migration in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the New Urban Agenda and the upcoming global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration. The workshop will establish a common understanding on the multiple linkages between migration, development and urbanization, and identify commitments on migration in global agendas relevant to cities. It will further facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience between the participants to identify strategic avenues for the proposed multi-year JWP on Migration and Cities. At the end of the workshop, the next steps and action points for the way forward on the JWP on Migration and Cities will be determined. We hope that this event will give us an early indication of Cities Alliance members, organizations working on migration, and partners from local governments and civil society expressing interest in participating in the proposed multi-year Joint Work Programme on Migration and Cities.
