1 Syllabus University of Texas El Paso Informing the Public: Immigration in the Digital Age A Study Abroad Experience in Italy Instructors: Dr. Ronald eber r. John De Course Description: A comparative study of how twenty-first century immigrant populations are adapting to new cultures and environments. The course will combine modern socio-historical research techniques with digital media to document, investigate and publicize the experiences of current refugees and immigrants. The goal is to inform students about a current global issue and to promote a greater awareness of the challenges facing immigrants and the countries that receive them. Students will develop a background knowledge of immigrant issues by an initial set of discussions and interviews investigating immigration in the El Paso region. Students will be able to consult with local academics and immigrant support agencies. This will be followed by a three week trip to Rome (ay 23 to June ) to study the history of immigration in Italy and the efforts currently underway in that country to develop humane solutions to immigrant needs. Instruction takes place amidst Rome s archaeological remains, important churches, museums, and social spaces to foster a comprehension of Rome's historical realities through a direct personal dialogue with the places and artefacts of Rome, our historical laboratory. Additionally students will have the opportunity to meet administrators and leaders in various Italian agencies and NGO s such as Germane Lavagan of Refugees elcome Italia, Hamdan Al-Zeqri, translator and teacher, and aria inuto of the Direzione Centrale per l immigrazione di ilano. By the end of the project students will have completed a multi-media presentation for display on the UTEP campus and in the public schools of El Paso. Course Rationale: Class objectives will be accomplished by on-site instruction with Rome as our historical laboratory. Rome offers students an opportunity to explore a world-class city that offers a unique set of circumstances in remarkable historical context. Through their research and experiences students

2 will encounter the historical layering that preserves the remembrance of human activity from ancient times to the present day. Roman heritage is a constant process of the coming and going of different human groups. Students will map human activity by identifying and photographing historical sites, developing a narrative of Rome's history through individual journal accounts. In the process, they will be working to develop projects that investigate the current state of demographic change, to analyze successes and failures, to digitally record their work, and to propose suggestions for continued work that will increase their knowledge of human cultural interaction. Our plan is to engage students in this research to develop long term educational products suitable for display and publication. Course Objectives: To complete this course, students will: 1. Increase their awareness of the historical and geographical spaces of an ancient city now functioning as a modern European tourist center. 2. Explain the connection between classical, medieval, renaissance and modern Rome. 3. Be prepared to engage and discuss various historical and artistic issues affecting how populations interact by studying on site in Rome. 4. Research and prepare an exhibit illustrating various aspects of the changing demographics of Italy. 5. Keep daily experience journals recording notes from lectures, photographs and personal observations on life in a non-english speaking country. 6. Experience the world of travel, crossing international borders, using public transportation and living in a foreign environment. 7. Gain knowledge, training & experience in video/multimedia preproduction, production and post production. Course Expectations: To complete the course with a high grade students should: 1 Complete all reading and homework assignments. 2 Come to class prepared to participate in all class discussions. 3 Bring a pen, notebook and the assigned reading to every class. 4 Type all assignments in accordance with the LS style sheet. 5 Know that all assignments are linked to class discussions, readings and videos. 6 Be prepared to present short historical reports on site in Rome. 7 Attend all meetings on site in Rome. 8 Complete the aymester preproduction tasks: a complete plotline, 1 st draft script, 1 st draft storyboard.

3 9 Complete the Summer I production: 2 nd draft script & 2 nd draft storyboard, film intro to script and testimonials, film B-roll and 10 pictures of monument. 10 Complete the Summer I post production: finalize voice overs for script, edit video & photos in lab.
