IKE S ROLE IN VIETNAM 100% supported idea called the Domino theory - apply to Vietnam????? You have a row of dominoes set up. You knock over the first one, and what will happen to the last one is a certainty that it will go over very quickly. Ike sent $, supplies, ammunition to French forces Why didn t he send troops to help in ?? By 1954 U.S. paying more than 75% of cost of war! What s the odd part here??? France finally surrendered at Dien Bien Phu, May 1954 Why did France lose? Had better weapons, $, support from U.S.? Need foreshadowing think about the last question on your homework!
1. Truman and Eisenhower all believed in the same course of action in Vietnam the Domino Theory. How was Vietnam representative of the Cold War? a. The U.S. did not want North Vietnam to win and spread communism which was what the Cold War was about b. The U.S. and the S.U. directly fought in Vietnam c. If Vietnam falls to communism it will spread to China Senteo Question To set the properties right click and select Senteo Question Object->Properties...

(sound familiar?) Finally, it s just what the Vietnamese people want! Their OWN country meeting) South Vietnam U.S. supported democratic government Ngo Dinh Diem - leader
DIEM S DEMOCRACY IKE counted on Diem to help stop spread of communism Roman Catholic/anticommunist stance Spent time in U.S. However, U.S. soon saw the true Diem Fixed elections (received 200,000 more votes than people registered!) Favored Catholics which upset HUGE Buddhist pop. Gave top gov. jobs to family, favored wealthy Tortured, imprisoned political opponents Why the heck would the U.S. still support him??

KENNEDY S TIME TO ESCALATE! JFK also supported domino theory Felt had to support Diem because if SV fell would send a bad message across Asia Remember JFK s foreign policy?? Increased military advisors as well as special forces - Green Berets ,000 U.S. advisors ,000 U.S. advisors Advisors not supposed to take part in combat but Americans killed Americans killed
KENNEDY S TIME FOR ESCALATION! Diem s gov. growing more unpopular - U.S. leaders begin secret plan to overthrow Diem Never able to carry out plan - Diem assassinated Nov why does the U.S. feel responsible for Vietnam from here on out? JFK believed In the final analysis it is their war. They are the ones who have to win or lose it. JFK assassinated three weeks later would our policy in Vietnam have changed? We ll never know!

JOHNSON S INCREASED INVOLVEMENT Situation in Vietnam quickly getting worse S. Vietnamese gov. on brink of collapse VC control 40% of South Believes U.S. cannot be seen as soft, agrees with Kennedy that China and SU cannot see us as weak the biggest damn mess I ever saw. Johnson began to believe only U.S. military involvement would prevent Communist victory - but needs approval from?
TONKIN GULF RESOLUTION Johnson said attack was unprovoked Americans later learned President manipulated information USS Maddox on spying mission and fired first Before midnight, August 4, 1964 Johnson went on TV and reported USS Maddox (destroyer) been attacked by NV forces and asked for approval of resolution Approved by Congress Aug. 7 - enabled the president to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against forces of the United States. Two senators opposed I believe history will record we have made a great mistake. We are in effect giving the President war-making powers in the absence of a declaration of war.
WE ARE 100% IN! Dec ,000 troops 1966 another 200,000 troops ,000 troops there I have asked the commanding general, General Westmoreland, what more he needs to meet this mounting aggression. He has told me. And we will meet his needs. We cannot be defeated by force of arms. We will stand in Vietnam.
