Maintaining a valid passport is your responsibility. Your respective home country consulate or embassy in Malaysia can assist with passport renewals. The International Office can provide letters certifying your enrolment should you need it to assist in revalidating your passport. Student Pass and Visa Approval Letter The Student Pass and Visa are endorsed onto your passport by the Malaysian Immigration Department. This endorsement indicates your visa type, the length of stay in Malaysia, the number of entries permitted into Malaysia and the validity of the Student Pass (which is typically for one year). The Malaysian Immigration regulations require all international students to enrol as a full-time student throughout their stay in Malaysia. You can internationaloffice@taylors.edu.my to enquire about matters pertaining to your student pass approval processes. Original Copy of School Certificates You will have to bring along your original school certificates for confirmation of authenticity of the documents submitted during your application. Not doing so will be a violation of the Malaysian Immigration Department s regulations. While we will assist in your Student Pass application, Taylor s cannot be held liable for any change in policies by the Malaysian Immigration Department in regards to issuance of the Student Pass. 6. Kindly check with the Malaysian High Commission in your home country or the Malaysian Immigration website to see if there are any requirements to enter into Malaysia. All taxis are required to charge fees based on a metered rate. Once you hop into the taxi, the flagged down fare is RM3 for the first 2km and 10sen for every 100m thereafter (subject to change). You will need to pay 50% surcharge between midnight and 6am. Additional RM2 is charged for: phone booking, 3rd adult passenger (max 4) or baggage stored in the boot. Some unscrupulous drivers may over-charge by asking for a flat fee, giving excuses like there is a jam ahead, he has to return to the base without a passenger and so on. Don t fall for it (unless you are in an emergency and have no other options). Make sure the taxi driver charges by meter BEFORE getting on the taxi. Tell them where you want to go and then ask if he will charge by meter. * Passengers have the right to object if the taxi driver stops to pick up other passengers along the way. Airport limousine taxis (budget or premier) at the KLIA operate using a prepaid coupon system and visitors are required to make their payment at the counter. 25 Living in Malaysia Festivals and Public Holidays Malaysia is a multi-ethnic, multicultural and multilingual society, consisting approximately of 65% Malays, 25% Chinese, 7% Indians and other indigenous tribes. Bahasa Malaysia is the national language but English, Mandarin and to a lesser degree, Tamil, is widely spoken and used especially in the business and commercial sectors. Islam is the official religion and the religion of the Malay majority but every Malaysian is free to practise his religion of choice. As such, churches, temples and mosques are a common sight throughout the country. Malaysia is represented by major Asian ethnic groups, namely, the Malays, Chinese and Indians. As such, a potpourri of cultures, each with its own unique set of customs and traditions, is to be expected. In Malaysia, acceptance and tolerance of one another s cultural differences is the key to a peaceful and harmonious society. In fact this mutual respect of one another s differences and the right to choose one s religion has given rise to a cultural mosaic that is rich, colourful and uniquely Malaysian. There are two types of holidays in Malaysia - national and state level holidays. National holidays are observed by most government and private organisations. State holidays are normally only observed by certain states in Malaysia or when it is relevant to the state itself. You can find a list of Malaysian Festivals and Public Holidays at the last page of this book.

26 Living in Malaysia Adjusting to a New Environment Going to a new country can be quite daunting regardless of where you originate. You will find much to be unfamiliar with. The sights, sounds, tastes and smells of a new country will often be so strange that they can overwhelm you, especially during the first few weeks. Coming to a country as multicultural and multilingual as Malaysia will no doubt compound your culture shock; as you will find that there is much you don t understand. Like many other students and foreigners coming to Malaysia for the first time, you may find these changes very confusing and upsetting. You could feel helpless, anxious, despair, demotivated, frustrated or even angry. If you are very distressed by the feelings you have in this new environment, remember, you are not alone. All overseas students have experienced some of these feelings they are quite normal but most learn to overcome them in the first weeks and months of their stay here. Coping with a new environment You can overcome these feelings little by little as you get to know your new environment. Learning about a new culture is an important part of the education you will receive here, and worth the effort you put into it. There are many ways you can find out about Malaysia and Malaysians, and learn to feel at home here. Remember that when people behave in a way you don t understand, there is usually a reason for what they do. Although their behaviour might be unacceptable in your culture, it might be acceptable within their own culture and according to their personal standards. You will need to observe people, listen to them and ask many questions. It is important not to judge people before you understand their values and customs. Learn to relax! It s a good idea to learn to laugh at the mistakes you will make from time to time. People will be happy to help you if you are relaxed and ready to learn. Find ways to meet as many people as possible. Join the BBC fun trips, go to concerts and be ready to talk. Your physical surroundings will become familiar to you as you find your lecture rooms and the campus. We invite you to explore a little further each day. Taylor s has International Student Advisors and Counsellors who would be happy to help you with any problems you have settling into your new life and meeting people. 26

27 Shopping Living in Malaysia Kuala Lumpur is a shopper s paradise. Clothes, electronics and IT goods, as well as sports goods are among the favourites and you will find the prices here very competitive. In general, shops open from 10.30am till 9.30pm but expect shops to open or close earlier in other parts of Malaysia, especially in the smaller towns. Kuala Lumpur and the adjacent city of Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya are teeming with grand shopping malls, hypermarkets, supermarkets, boutiques and shops of all manner and sizes. These shopping outlets are conveniently located and serviced by public transportation. And since eating is a national pastime, you ll be pleasantly surprised to find all kinds of eateries alongside the shops and in shopping malls to cater to tired shoppers who need a break before continuing with their shopping spree. You may want to remember these exciting shopping venues: Suria KLCC, Pavilion KL, 1 Utama Shopping Centre, The Curve, IPC Shopping Centre, Mid Valley Mega Mall and The Gardens Mall, Sunway Pyramid, Sungei Wang Plaza, Fahrenheit 88, Lot 10 and Berjaya Times Square. 27

28 Living in Malaysia Personal Safety Never bring any recreational drugs into Malaysia, even if you are only here in transit. Possession and / or trafficking of even minute amounts can lead to a mandatory death sentence. Crime levels are relatively low in Malaysia, but always use your common sense and take the necessary precautions. Here are some tips for your personal safety. 1. Pickpockets and snatch-and-run thieves ply their trade in many large cities, and you are advised to be wary of your surroundings and take extra care of your belongings. 2. Travel documents and valuables are best deposited in a safe or locked away carefully, as there is a possibility of a theft occuring while you are away. 3. Women who are travelling alone should be wary of opening their doors to strangers. Always use common sense in such situations. Do not do anything you are not comfortable with. 4. If using a taxi after midnight or before dawn, it is best to use the dial-a-taxi service as the cab companies would have a record of the taxi s registration number. 5. Do not accept drinks from strangers in any pub or club as there is a risk they might be spiked. 6. Drunk driving is a serious offence and breathalyser tests by the police are common. 7. Credit card fraud can be a problem, so use them only at large, reputable retailers, and do not let your card out of sight. 8. Public demonstrations are almost unheard of in Malaysia but should any occur, they may be treated with a heavy punishment, so avoid them at all costs. 28
