2 Executive Summary Preliminary Immigration Levels It is important to note that the following observations are preliminary. Manitoba received 4,584 immigrants in the year compared with the national total of 226,379. This represents 2.02% of the Canadian total during the same period. For the first time in recent years, Canada received more immigrants than its planned upper limit by 1,379 immigrants. The upper limit for year was 225,000 immigrants. In the year, Manitoba received 32% of new arrivals in the economic class (1,472 persons) and 21% in the family class (952 persons). Over 22% of Manitoba's accepted arrivals are refugees (1,017 people). The top city of destination for Manitoba newcomers is Winnipeg with over 76% or 3,506 newcomers choosing that city. The top source country of new immigrants to Manitoba is the Philippines with 689 persons (15%). Preliminary Provincial Nominee Levels In 1999, 500 applicants were nominated by Manitoba and 188 applied for federal immigration processing that year. In, 515 principal applicants were nominated and 1,088 individuals arrived in Manitoba (313 principal applicants). Manitoba's share of the national Provincial Nominee Program total intake of 1,247 persons is 1,088 immigrants or 87%. In terms of source country, Germany was the highest with 480 new arrivals (44.1%) followed closely by the Philippines with 239 arrivals (22%). 2
