3 About one-quarter of the U.S. foreign-born population are unauthorized immigrants, while the majority of the nation s immigrants are in the U.S. legally. Naturalized citizens account for the largest portion of the foreignborn population (44.1%).

5 Immigrants and the Economy Immigrants are more than twice as likely to start a business as the native-born. Immigrants started 28 percent of all new U.S. businesses in 2011, despite accounting for just 12.9 percent of the U.S. population. Immigrants pay billions of dollars in federal, state and local taxes. A comprehensive study estimated that legal and illegal immigrants paid $162 billion in federal, state and local taxes. According to the Social Security Administration s Chief Actuary, undocumented immigrants have contributed an estimated net of $120 billion to $240 billion to the Social Security fund which they are ineligible to ever receive Partnership for New American Economy 2012 report Mass Deportation of Immigrants will cause $2.6 trillion loss to the US GDP over 10 years Comprehensive Immigration Reform with benefit the US GDP by $1.5 trillion over 10 years CBO office and Center for American Progress 2010

12 Immigration Legal Services Within its Community Ownership pillar, TRP offers initiatives to support the economic and civic integration of new Americans. Asset Protection Citizenship and DREAMER Workshops Financial empowerment Low-cost legal assistance Leadership training Voter registration Loan referrals Illinois has more than 525,000 undocumented residents Illinois has more than 550,000 legal permeant residents (67% are able to naturalize)
13 Legal Defense Fund Overview A community-based strategy to expand legal counsel and support services for for immigrants residing in Chicago. Seed funding of $1.3 million from the City of Chicago. Increase legal capacity at the National Immigrant Justice Center to screen, defend, and protect immigrants. Leverage Chicago s pro-bono legal community. Establish Community Navigator Program at 8 communitybased organizations to conduct outreach and education to 20,000 individuals. The Resurrection Project 13
14 Community Navigators Outreach to 20,000+ individuals via 200+ highly trained volunteers. Volunteers provide education at community-based organizations, schools, churches, etc. Education on topics such as: Know Your Rights, DACA Facts, Citizenship, Protection of Assets, and other ad-hoc trainings related to policy shifts and executive orders. Volunteers refer immigrants to legal counsel and other support services at NIJC, IDPL, TRP, and others agencies. Volunteers accompany immigrants as needed. Participants invited to participate in leadership development and advocacy campaigns. The Resurrection Project 14

18 You Have the Right to: REMAIN SILENT DO NOT LIE SPEAK WITH AND BE REPRESENTED BY AN ATTORNEY In Immigration, an attorney is at our own expense NOT SIGN ANYTHING NOT PERMIT AN ENTRY It is NOT necessary to open the door unless ICE or the Police have a signed Judicial Warrant I wish to remain silent 18
19 Know your Rights: If ICE Comes to Your Home or Workplace DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR You are NOT required to open the door unless ICE has a warrant signed by a judge Ask them to show you the warrant Slide it under your door or hold it up to the window IF THEY TRY TO FORCE THE DOOR OPEN Write down the agents badge numbers and vehicles license plate numbers IF ICE COMES TO YOUR WORKPLACE ICE needs to have a judicial warrant or permission from your employer to enter your workplace 19

24 Begin your Emergency Plan 1. Identify who will be in charge of taking care of your kids and your assets and have a reunion regarding your decisions. 2. Updated your child's emergency contact information at their school and with their doctors. 3. Apply for your U.S. citizen child s double nationality and U.S. Passport and verify all your options with your consulate. 4. Gather your important documents in a safe place. Make sure your emergency contact has access to the documents. 5. Save money, make sure your bank account is attached to a debit card that you can use to withdrawal money from in another country and make your bank accounts accessible via online. 24
