1 SIKL PRESIDENT S REPORT 2015 SOROPTIMISTS EDUCATE, EMPOWER AND ENABLE WOMEN AND GIRLS BY WORKING TO PROMOTE SOCIAL JUSTICE, EQUALITY AND THE EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN AND GIRLS THROUGH SERVICE PROJECTS AT CLUB, NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LEVELS. MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS: Soroptimists are business and professional women who work to maintain high ethical standards in their business and professional life and use their talents and energy in the service of their local and global communities. Soroptimists form a global network of women who have accepted the challenge to advance human rights and the status of women through 1. JANUARY 2015 AWARENESS, ADVOCACY AND ACTION The new year begins with a lot of great hopes that SIKL will grow to greater heights. The members of nine (9) in 2014 had not been diligent in attending the monthly meetings. It had been a difficult time for the club to progress with activities/projects. President Su Yi Chong taken leave in September Since October 2014 President Elect Sharifah Halimah had to assume the responsibilities. Nonetheless, we wish to thank Su Yi for the contributions in leading the club and we wish her well. The first monthly meeting of the year was held on 18 th January 2015 with the objective of establishing a yearly plan to re-energize the Club particularly in improving the memberships, to create projects/activities and raise funds to ensure sustainability of the CLUB. 2. 2 SIROM Delegate Sharifah Halimah Syed Ahmad Patricia Daniel Joanne V. Fernandez 3. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE: As the AGM, SIKL membership stood at 5. Nurul Izzah Bistamam joined SIKL in March i) It was recognized the SIKL will celebrate its 25 th Jubilee Anniversary in 2016, as such members are encouraged to recruit members to meet the 25 numbers, ie KPI for all; ii) Follow up with friends who have expressed their interest in joining SIKL. iii) One (1) new members joined the Club in April, ie Denise Phang iv) Two (2) new members joined in May, they are Yvonne Lee and Feng Wai Cia. In the efforts of improving the membership of the Club, a friendship evening programme was held at the residence of PP of SIKL, Joanne Fernandez on 22 nd May A total of 10 friends/acquaintances attended the nite. SIKL members will follow up to get them to join the Club. Joanne, as always, had been a splendid host, As at December 2015, total members stood at nine (9). However, in late December 2015, three (3) members could not continue with their memberships namely Feng Wai Chia, Yvonne Lee and Denise Pang James. 4. PROJECTS JANUARY TO DECEMBER Dasar Perbandaran Negara (DPN) President SIKL and Joanne Fernandez representing Cancerlink were invited to attend a meeting which was organized by Jabatan Perancangan Bandar dan Desa Semenanjung Malaysia held at Syuen Hotel in Ipoh on 5 th March 2015 on the stakeholders engagement with Non- Governmental agencies in Peninsular Malaysia. A draft Report on Dasar Perbandaran Negara (DPN) on Kajian Profil Bandar (KPB) was presented by the Consultant, ie KW Associate Planners Sdn Bhd 2

3 Participants were encouraged to contribute to the above principles. The feedback from the workshop will be compiled by the secretariat. A follow up meeting will be held in Kuala Lumpur. SIKL will be invited accordingly. 4.2 COMMUNICATION FOR BEHAVIORAL IMPACT (COMBI) PROJECT SIKL attempted to embark on a dengue awareness project based on the COMBI module. It will involve the identified community, schools in the vicinity and the Ministry of Health. SILK was recommended to do this project in Petaling Jaya instead of Putrajaya which is currently a dengue hot spot. Meeting was held with Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah Petaling (PKDP) to discuss on how SIKL could support the COMBI project improving the awareness of the community. However, the project was aborted due to lack of volunteers which SIKL was trying to obtain from the Colleges surrounding the Puchong areas. 4.3 ROHINGYA UNHCR project SIKL vide introduction by SIJB on involvement with UNHCR project had meeting on 24th April 2015 with UNHCR to discuss on identifying the project to support the Rohinya refugees in the Klang Valley. Briefly the points of discussion: i) Total Rohingya registered by UNHCR in Malaysia is 47,000. They have no access to schools, do not have the right to work and UNHCR only provide protection in a form of Refugee Identification Card; ii) They are located in Cheras, Ampang, Sentul, Selayang and Klang; iii) They need to be developed, ie skill training or character building of the Women and young (teenage), estimated number of 20 women. Some of the skill training that they require: i) Basic concern - communication, vocabulary etc be it English or Malay - SIKL needs to establish programme to begin with; ii) Project identification - eg basic baking so that they can develop the skills and later move on to doing small business to be sub-supplier - basic home economics to be taught. SIKL needs the following: 1) to visit the proposed location and establish what is needed to be provided in terms of space and equipment/utensils etc; 2) to discuss on safety and hygiene to ensure sustainability of the project; and 3) to work with SIKL and Soroptimist members /experts in areas of communication and appropriate skills. 3

4 With respect to the funding of the Project, it is informed that the project will be funded at RM1,200 per Refugee for a max number of twenty (20) women with an estimated total of RM24,000 which include purchase of equipment (stoves or oven) baking and/or cooking utensils, supplies (raw materials etc), All expenditure will be monitored and presented during the regular project update meeting. Awaiting for confirmation from UNHCR as they are pretty tied up with the current issues. However, the project was aborted as UNHCR had changed the approach to handle the matter with the ROHINGYA community. 4.4 FACE THE WORLD PROJECT The project initiated by the Shanti with the support of the members kicked off in September The project objectives are to help Shelter home children and other underprivileged groups prepare the transition from school or home to the workplace. On September 26, 2015 SIKL started the first of the six (6) modules of project Face the World with 15 teenagers male and female ages from Rumah Hope Petaling Jaya. In this respect, SIKL members and friends take on training roles in their respective areas of expertise and experience. The Module 1 entitled Choosing Careers was facilitated by Soroptimist Denise Pang-James was held on September Module 2 entitled Personal Hygiene and grooming for work was facilitated by Soroptimist Yvonne Lee on October Module 3 entitled Building Self-Esteem and Team building was facilitated by Soroptimist Shanti Abishegam on November 14, It was very interactive and had children excited playing the teambuilding and trust games. This is the last session for the Home children as they complete yearend examinations and prepare to go home. SIKL wish that they can complete the project by middle of

5 5. FUNDRAISING SIKL had conducted a car boot sales in March and April 2015 selling good used clothes and household items at Kota Damansara on Sundays. A mere sum of RM was collected and the President Dato Sharifah has donated to SIKL. 6. DONATIONS A sum of RM1,000 was donated by SIKL to Nepal earthquake funds which was organized by SIROM 7. NEUBODI USED BRA DRIVE SIKL collected 23 bras for the Neubodi Bra Drive for underprivileged women in Nepal, Cambodia and India. 8. WALK THE TALK UNITED AGAINST VIOLENCE 5

6 SIKL President Elect Patricia Daniel and Treasurer Puteri Norlizawati Ismail attended the event on Dec 5 in support of activities organized by SIROM annual event. 9. SI SENTUL LATIN NIGHT Patricia Daniel and friends had a rioting time at SI Sentul s Noche Latina at Royal Lake Club on October 30, in a night of fun and Latin music and dance organised by SI Sentul. 6

SIROM 11 TH BIENNUAL CONFERENCE AT PEARL OF THE ORIENT, PENANG The above conference which was held on 20 to 22 March 2015 was attended by President Dato Sharifah and Joanne Fernandez, SIROM Delegate. The Conference was attended by 76 SIROM members who had a fun filled events and educational talks. The end of event was a gala dinner. 12 E-ROSES SIKL has successfully registered with e-roses in March 2015 for the accounts of It was delayed as it had difficulties in obtaining past records of Committee members details. Nonetheless, matter pertaining filing of 2013 accounts was completed on 25 th February 2016 after much difficulty in obtaining the details of the committee members of
