3. Similarities and differences between Thai culture and the cultures of Southeast Asia Thai society consists in a variety of people from different cultures who came to live together in what is today the country named Thailand. Some of these ethnic groups were occupied and absorbed by the main local kingdoms (ancient Thailand).

Some joined Thai kingdoms voluntarily, thanks to diplomatic agreements or royal families links. Some others migrate into Thailand escaping all kinds of problems in their original lands. Knowing that, is no surprise that cultures and traditions in Thailand are quite similar to those of neighboring countries.

1) Architecture UNIT 4 THAI CULTURES AND THE CULTURES OF COUNTRIES IN SOUTHEAST ASIA Because Thailand is located in a tropical zone, the characteristics of living places architecture are very similar to those of neighboring countries: Using wood and bamboo as raw materials Elevating the houses up from the ground Having open gaps on the walls for ventilation Having steep roofs and rims sticking out to block the sun and the rain Division in: bedroom + living room + kitchen + balcony Houses with many windows Under space used to store equipment and raising animals

2) Religious beliefs UNIT 4 THAI CULTURES AND THE CULTURES OF COUNTRIES IN SOUTHEAST ASIA The cultures of neighboring countries are rooted significantly in the religions and beliefs that the majority of the people within the country have practiced in the past (ancient local beliefs) Imposed over those ancient beliefs there is a considerable amount of great religions spread all over Southeast Asia, namely: Buddhism Hinduism Islam Christianity

The first 2 from South Asia, the other 2 from West Asia, although Christianity became a great religion thanks to Europeans. As you can imagine, the countries sharing the same great religion as the major religion within its borders have many traditions and rituals in common. In the case of Thailand the countries religiously more similar are: Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia

Many other countries in Southeast Asia share another great religion: Islam. Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei And others share similar Christian values and traditions: East Timor and The Philippines Nonetheless, all these 3 great religions (Buddhism, Christianity and Islam) can be found in all the countries of Southeast Asia. Hinduism is less popular, and is followed mainly in Bali (Indonesia), Singapore and Malaysia.

3) Languages Thai language belongs to the Thai-Kadai family. Thai-Kadai languages, besides Thailand and Laos, are also spoken in: Cambodia, India, Malaysia, China, Myanmar, Singapore and Vietnam In Thailand there s also languages originated from neighboring countries.

Tai Kadai-speaking peoples: Kadai-speaking_peoples UNIT 4 THAI CULTURES AND THE CULTURES OF COUNTRIES IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

List of languages and ethnic groups in Thailand:

Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and The Philippines share the same family of languages Austronesian Although Chinese and English are widely spread in Singapore). Vietnam and Cambodia, although their languages are very different, also share the same family Austro-Asiatic In Myanmar people speak Burmese, belonging to another family of languages Sino-Tibetan
