6 THE GLOBAL CLASSROOM 12th May - 16th May 2014 Experts and Professors Giuliano Comba Giuliano Comba is the Secretary of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) working group and Human Rights Council segment, within the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). He has served for more than 30 years as an international civil servant in the United Nations system. As Chief of the UPR Section, in he was responsible for setting up and managing OHCHR s support to the UPR. Michael O'Flaherty Michael O'Flaherty has been Established Professor of Human Rights Law and Director of the Irish Centre for Human Rights at the National University of Ireland, Galway since February Previously Prof. O'Flaherty held several headquarters and field positions in the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). This included co-ordination of the OHCHR Asia and the Pacific programmes, field operations in Sierra Leone and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and ( ) chairing the UN reference group on human rights and humanitarian action. Jean-Claude Vignoli Jean-Claude Vignoli is Programme Director of UPR Info. He is currently in charge of the UPR Info s Follow-up Programme. UPR Info aims at raising awareness on the Universal periodic review (UPR) and providing capacity-building tools tools to the different actors of process, such as United Nations Member States, NGOs, National Human Rights Institutions and civil society in general. It is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland. Stefania dall'oglio Stefania dall'oglio is Secretary General of the Interministerial Committee for Human Rights at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Since 2008 she has been teaching at "Roma Tre" University in Rome, Faculty of Letters and Philosophy, Master course "Peace education: international cooperation, human rights and European policies". Since she is also member of the Legislation and Parliamentary Affairs office of the Department for civil liberties and immigration at Ministry of the Interior. Miloon Kothari Miloon Kothari is a prominent international voice on human rights, especially economic, social and cultural rights. Formerly UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur on adequate housing ( ), he has been also the convener of the NGO Working Group on Human Rights in India, which is actively engaged in the UPR process. He has also been actively involved in works related to the human rights dimension on poverty, water and sanitation. Hasrul Hanif Hasrul Hanif has been working since 2006 as Lecturer at the Department of Politics and Government, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Gadjah Mada, Indonesia. In 2011 he was Visiting Fellow at AKSARA Institute for ECOSOC Rights, Yogyakarta, Indonesia and from 2011 to 2013 he was Visiting Researcher at ARUPA Yogyakarta. Vahan Bournazian Vahan Bournazian is Associate professor at the Yerevan State University. He has taught law and human rights in Armenia for the past 10 years. He has participated in human rights investigative missions in Mexico, Guatemala, Cuba and Iraq. He also serves as a legal researcher and consultant for both local and international organizations on topics related to Armenia and the region. He served on the OSF Armenia Board from
7 Alan Desmond Alan Desmond is the E.MA Fellow at EIUC specialising in International Law for the academic year 2013/2014. Alan is currently completing his PhD in University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. His doctoral research, funded by the Faculty of Law, UCC and the Irish Research Council, investigates the situations in which irregular migrants in the EU may have a right to a legal status. Gerd Oberleitner Gerd Oberleitner is Associate Professor of international law at the Institute of International Law and International Relations at the University of Graz, Austria. He served as Legal Adviser in the Human Rights Department of the Austrian Foreign Ministry ( ), was Executive Director of the European Training and Research Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (ETC) in Graz ( ) and Lecturer in Human Rights at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) ( ). Puleng Patricia Letuka Puleng Patricia Letuka is Vice-Dean of the University of Venda in South Africa. Mrs Letuka s academic career spans more than ten years. This career started at the National University of Lesotho. She has also been a Socio-legal researcher for Women and Law Research and Education Trust an organisation that was dealing with research and advocacy on gender, human rights and the law. She has various publications mostly in the area of gender and the law and in children s rights. Veronica Gomez Veronica Gomez is the co-director of the International Centre for Political Studies at the University of San Martin (UNSAM) in Argentina, and a lecturer of the Global Campus of Human Rights. She has been a Principal Human Rights Specialist at the Executive Secretariat of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States in Washington DC ( ) and a Senior Adviser at the Human Rights Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Argentina ( ).
