North Korea Facts* Ruled by Kim Jong-Un, the latest in the Kim Family. The Kim family has run the Worker s Party of Korea, the government that controls North Korea, for over 70 years. Sorts people according to the songbun (a rule that puts people in different classes, based on family, wealth, and loyalty to the Worker s Party). The songbun determines what school, jobs, and residences/areas people can access. People living in North Korea cannot leave without special permission. The country makes sure this happens by having barbed wire fences guarded by soldiers on the borders between North Korea and China, and heavy guards at the borders of North Korea and South Korea. All TV, movies, books, and Internet is controlled by the government. Non-North Korean movies, books, and TV are not allowed. Non-religious state, and those with religious contacts are often punished. Citizens are forced to work in assigned jobs to help support others. People who break the rules are thrown into prison camps, where they are usually sentenced to hard labor. The UN guesses that 80, ,000 people are in prison camps (including children). In April 2018, Kim Jong-Un met with South Korean president Moon Jae-in and declared an official end to the Korean War, leading many to think the two Korea s might unite. This might signal an end to the Kim reign.
Equatorial Guinea Facts* Ruled by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who has been in power almost 40 years. While ruled by President Obiang, huge reserves of oil were found in the country. Mbasogo has used the oil to make himself and his favorites rich, while keeping money from most of the country. It s a rich country, but over half the population does not have clean water. 26% rate of child malnutrition (children not getting enough to eat). Average life expectancy in the country has dropped from 68 years to 34 years. Obiang owns all the news channels and newspapers. Has elections, but anyone running against Obiang is arrested or threatened by police.
Eritrea Facts* Ruled by President Isaias Afwerki, who took power 25 years ago. Every citizen is forced into the military at age 18, and they sometimes have to stay there for over a decade. Military work doesn t always mean the army sometimes it means becoming a conscript, and having to serve government officials, usually for little to no money. The government owns all the news channels and newspapers. People who are arrested face harsh labor in prison, and many just disappear. In 2016, citizens had to give the government all their paper money. Now, everything has to be paid for by check. Any religion that is not Sunni Islam, Eritrean Orthodox, Roman Catholic, or Evangelical (Lutheran), is banned and members are punished.
Turkey Facts* Ruled by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was prime minister since 2003, then raised himself to president in Turkey tried to overthrow him in 2016, but failed. Thanks to that, there are still thousands of teachers, police, lawyers, and judges in jail. Teachers who don t agree with Erdogan s politics can be fired without warning, and are often thrown in jail. Journalists who write things disagreeing with Erdogan are often thrown in jail. Erdogan has taken over news channels and newspapers, as well as most universities.
Venezuela Facts* Was ruled by President Hugo Chávez. When he died, President Nicolás Maduro took over. They both took total control of the country. Other than Maduro s favorites, citizens of Venezuela do not have access to medicine or trained doctors. Huge food shortages throughout the country. People who are too poor are often punished or thrown in jail by police. People who protest the government are often arrested or tortured. The government shuts down news channels and newspapers if they disagree with President Maduro. Journalists who write things disagreeing with the government are often thrown in prison.
