3 INTRODUCTION The EU referendum will determine Britain s future. Labour is committed to remaining in the most influential international forum in the world. By campaigning in your area, you will have a big influence on the outcome of the referendum and the future of our country. Back in 1975 I voted in the first European Referendum. I voted for Britain to be part of Europe, and it is a decision I have never regretted. Then I was a twenty-five-year-old postman, raising three children on a council estate. I knew the weight of the arguments for and against - I carried them on my back for weeks delivering the leaflets for both sides. A lot has changed in the last 40 years, but for me the reasons for staying in Europe remain the same. It s about British jobs that put food on the table for the three million families whose livelihoods depend on EU membership. It s about British businesses. Businesses that rely on Europe for exports worth 227 billion a year. It s about rights for British workers: minimum paid leave, rights for agency workers, paid maternity and paternity leave, equal pay and anti-discrimination laws. And it s about Britain s global influence. In this increasingly interdependent world, we can achieve more by working with Europe than we can alone. These values are at the core of the Labour Party. As our membership cards state, by the strength of our common endeavour, we achieve more than we achieve alone. Thank you for the major contribution I know you will make to our campaign. This campaign pack is designed to help you with every aspect of your local campaign activities. I hope you find it useful. See you on the campaign trail soon. Yours, Alan Johnson Chair, Labour In for Britain 4 LABOUR IN FOR BRITAIN Campaign Pack LABOUR IN FOR BRITAIN Campaign Pack 5

4 ABOUT THIS CAMPAIGN PACK The EU referendum will be one the biggest political decisions Britain makes in a generation. You have a vital role to play in securing Britain s future by campaigning for local residents to vote to remain in the EU. This pack includes everything you need to activate the campaign in your area. Your campaign will be most effective if you use each of the channels detailed in this pack doorstep, print, press and social media. Each of these channels supports and compliments the others. A person might notice your campaign on social media, read more about it in the press and then finally be motivated to vote to stay in the EU after a doorstep conversation or a direct mail. KEY MESSAGES Use these key messages in all your communications and campaign activity. This will help you communicate clearly and consistently. Millions of British jobs are linked to trade with Europe Almost half of British exports go to the EU British businesses rely on the EU for exports worth 227 billion every year If we walk away from Europe we will leave Britain isolated We should not put jobs, businesses and Britain s future at risk by leaving the EU Many British workers rights, including the right to holiday pay, come from our EU membership BACKGROUND BRIEFING Britain is better off in Europe. It brings us jobs, growth and investment and protects British workers and consumers. Leaving would put that at risk and diminish Britain s influence in the world. Labour is campaigning for Britain to stay in Europe because we back working people in Britain Labour s campaign will be different from the cross party campaign. We are campaigning to stay in Europe to protect working people and stand up for rights in the workplace. It was Labour that made sure that Britain s EU membership gave British workers rights to minimum paid leave, rights for agency workers, paid maternity and paternity leave, equal pay, anti-discrimination laws, and protection for the workforce when companies change ownership. Britain s EU membership supports jobs and growth Britain is a proud trading nation with almost half of our exports going to EU countries worth 227 billion last year to the UK economy. We receive on average 26.5 billion of investment every year from other EU countries. UK jobs and businesses large and small are dependent on trade with Europe. Future EU trade could create 790,000 more jobs by 2030 by opening up markets in digital services, energy and tourism. Large companies from all over the world not just from inside the EU choose to build their offices and factories in the UK and recruit staff here because we are a gateway to the European single market. From car manufacturing to high-tech industry to financial services, inward investment creates vital jobs all over the country. Leaving risks investors taking their businesses and jobs elsewhere. Hardworking Brits are better off thanks to our EU membership Our EU membership has given vital rights to British workers. The EU s rules protect British consumers, British workers and the environment. Being in the EU means the average family saves around 450 a year due to lower prices, achieved through the strength we derive from being part of the biggest consumer market in the world. Britain s interest demands keeping a strong voice at the top table Because Europe is central to jobs and prosperity, Britain needs a strong voice at the top table which decides the rules on everything from free trade to fishing. Of course the EU needs reform. But we need to make sure it is reformed so that it works for us and that means staying in to have a voice, not being spectators. If we leave the EU, Britain will still have to follow the EU s rules when we do business there we just won t have any say in making the rules any more. Countries like Norway which aren t part of the EU have to adopt nearly all EU law in return for access to the Single Market take it or leave it. In an era of billion-person countries, Europe gives Britain an influence we lack when we act alone Britain s EU membership makes us a major player in world trade as an EU member, we re part of a market with 500 million consumers which other countries want to do business with. The UK is stronger negotiating deals with countries like China and the USA as part of the EU group of 28 nations than we would be on our own. The EU has helped to keep the peace in Europe for decades. Members agree to adhere to common values and respect each other s borders. At a time of instability in Ukraine and the Middle East, it s important to be part of a group of nations committed to peace, security and democracy. Many of the problems Britain faces today affect other countries too: climate change, terrorism, cross-border crime. We are better off working together with our neighbours to solve these problems rather than pulling out of the EU and weakening our country. In this campaign, we ll continue that proud Labour tradition of campaigning for Britain in Europe, because it s good for British jobs and good for the men and women in those jobs. 6 LABOUR IN FOR BRITAIN Campaign Pack LABOUR IN FOR BRITAIN Campaign Pack 7

5 ON THE DOORSTEP Use the Key Messages and the Background Briefing section in this pack to brief your activists. Ensure you brief your team before campaign sessions and equip them with the messages and statistics they need. Provide your activists with plenty of leaflets. Amend your doorstep script to ask residents how they will be voting in the EU referendum. PRINT AND DIRECT MAIL RESOURCES We have developed a range of resources to help you run this campaign in your area. Here you will find print materials, a model press release and social media graphics. These resources are available in digital formats at members.labour.org.uk/resources-for-organisers LEAFLET Print will allow you to put your campaign materials in the hands of local residents. Leaflets can deliver key messages effectively and quickly, while direct mail is a more personal, in-depth campaign tool. A model direct mail is available in this pack and on Campaign Creator. Campaign Creator has model articles available for you to use in newsletters and tabloids. A specially designed campaign leaflet is available on the Campaign Shop. GETTING YOUR CAMPAIGN IN THE NEWS This pack includes a model press release which can be combined with regional and local statistics. Send this press release to the news desks of local papers, blogs, radio stations and TV channels, and directly to local journalists who have recently written about the EU referendum. Offer an interview with your MP or candidate. Before undertaking interviews, ensure you refresh your knowledge with the Key Messages and Background Briefing sections in this pack. CAMPAIGNING ON SOCIAL MEDIA Campaigning online allows you to reach large numbers of people, to engage residents and encourage them to share your campaign with friends and family. Graphics are available for you to use on the Campaign Resources section on Membersnet. These will enhance your posts and help you increase engagement. There is also a localisable infographic available through Campaign Creator, which will automatically contain relevant local statistics. Share the campaign video available at LabourInForBritain.org.uk Jobs. Exports. Security. Don t leave them behind. Don t risk Britain s future.
