4 The International Commission on Civil Status (ICCS) is an intergovernmental organisation whose aim is to facilitate international co-operation in civil-status matters and to improve the operation of national civil-status departments. To this end, it keeps up-to-date a documentation on legislation and case-law setting out the law of the member States, provides those States with information and expertise, carries out legal and technical studies, prepares publications and drafts Conventions and Recommendations. The Council of Europe (CoE) is one of the Continent s oldest international organisations known for its work promoting human rights and democracy. 5 The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is Europe s flagship laboratory for the life sciences. EMBL is an intergovernmental organisation established in 1974 and is supported by over 20 member states. Staff and scientists at EMBL perform fundamental research to study the story of life, develop new technologies, offer scientific services, and train the next generation of scientists. EMBL is an international, innovative and interdisciplinary organisation. It operates across six sites in Europe and employs more than 1600 people, from over 80 countries. ESO, the European Southern Observatory, is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world s most productive astronomical observatory. ESO employs 680 staff and is supported by 16 countries, along with the host state of Chile. Whilst the Headquarters (comprising the scientific, technical and administrative centre of the organisation) are located in Garching near Munich, Germany, ESO operates, in addition to the Santiago Centre, three observing sites in Chile. The ESRF, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, is an international research facility based on a particle accelerator and located in Grenoble, France. Thanks to innovative engineering and high-level scientific vision, it is recognised as one of the top research institutions worldwide. The ESRF employs 650 staff and welcomes thousands of scientists for experiments in fields such as biology, medicine, earth and environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics. The European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) is an operational satellite agency at the heart of Europe. 8 The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance International IDEA is an intergovernmental organization that supports sustainable democracy worldwide. International IDEA s mission is to support sustainable democratic change by providing comparative knowledge, and assisting in democratic reform, and influencing policies and politics. International IDEA acts as a catalyst for democracy building; by providing knowledge resources, policy proposals and supporting democratic reforms in response to specific national requests. The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is a research institute financed by 13 countries. It operates the brightest neutron source in the world. The ILL s mission is to make its facilities available to scientists from around the world. 9 Established in 1951, International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Migration Agency works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. With 169 member states, a further 8 states holding observer status and offices in over 100 countries, IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. 11 The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), based in The Hague, The Netherlands, is the implementing body of the Chemical Weapons Convention. As of today OPCW has 192 Member States, who are working together to achieve a world free of chemical weapons and share the collective goal of preventing chemistry from ever again being used for warfare. To this end, the Convention contains four key provisions: destroying all existing chemical weapons under international verification by the OPCW; monitoring chemical industry to prevent new weapons from re-emerging; providing assistance and protection to States Parties against chemical threats; and fostering international cooperation to strengthen implementation of the Convention and promote the peaceful use of chemistry. The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) is the world s largest regional security organisation. It offers a forum for political negotiations and decision-making in the fields of early warning, conflict prevention, crisis management and post-conflict rehabilitation, and puts the political will of its 57 participating States into practice through its unique network of field missions. The OSCE has a comprehensive approach to security that encompasses politico military, economic and environmental, and human aspects. Intergovernmental Organisation for International Carriage by Rail (french: Organisation intergouvernementale pour les transports internationaux ferroviaires, OTIF) is an intergovernmental organisation dedicated to international rail transport. It has been active since It now has 50 Member States. OTIF develops unified railway law to connect Europe, Asia and Africa. It uses simple and effective tools to promote, improve and facilitate international carriage by rail. OTIF provides legal and technical interoperability for international carriage by rail. It works in close partnership with the European Union, the European Union Agency for Railways, the International Rail Transport Committee, the International Union of Railways, the Organization for Co-operation between Railways and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. 11

12 The South Centre is an intergovernmental organization of developing countries established in 1995 with its headquarters in Geneva. As the multilateral think tank of the South, the Centre provides policy advice and undertakes research and analysis on key issues such as development, international trade, macroeconomic policy, global health, innovation, climate change and sustainable development. We promote South-South Cooperation and more equitable relations between North and South to the sustainable development of all peoples. UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) is the UN organisation dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. 14 The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was created in 1950, during the aftermath of the Second World War, to help millions of Europeans who had fled or lost their homes. Today, over 67 years later, our organization is still hard at work, to ensure on a non-political and humanitarian basis the protection of millions of refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced people and stateless people, worldwide. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is faced with and unprecedented number over 65 million people displaced due to ongoing conflicts and new emergencies. It is UNHCR s job to face these challenges, to lead and coordinate international action for the protection of refugees and the resolution of refugee problems. Today, UNHCR has over 10,966 staff working in 130 countries. United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes inclusive and sustainable industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. The relevance of ISID as an integrated approach to all three pillars of sustainable development is recognized by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which frame international development efforts. United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNI- TAR) develops the individual, institutional and organizational capacities of countries through high-quality learning solutions and related services to enhance decision making and to support country-level action for overcoming global challenges. UNITAR s work is aligned with the 2030 Agenda, as well as with the outcomes of the other major 2015 international conferences. 15 Housed at the Palais des Nations, the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) serves as the representative office of the Secretary-General at Geneva. A focal point for multilateral diplomacy, UNOG services more than 8,000 meetings every year, making it one of the busiest conference centres in the world. With more than 1,600 staff, it is the biggest duty stations outside of United Nations headquarters in New York. UNOG manages the United Nations facilities in Geneva and provides conference services for the United Nations meetings held at Geneva. The United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) is an autonomous institute in the UN system dedicated to multidisciplinary research and policy analysis on social dimensions of current development issues in Social Policy, Gender and Sustainable Development. Our small Geneva-based staff engages in research, communications and policy engagement activities in partnership with a global network of people and institutions to co-create knowledge, and shape policy and practice. unrisd.org The International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) is an intergovernmental organization based in Geneva. The mission of UPOV is to provide and promote an effective system of plant variety protection, with the aim of encouraging the development of new varieties of plants, for the benefit of society. UPOV has 75 members covering the territories of 94 States. Plant breeding is a major contributor to increased food security within the context of climate change. The UPOV system plays a crucial role in encouraging plant breeders to meet that objective (see The Universal Postal Union (UPU) is the United Nations specialized agency for postal services. Established in 1874 the UPU, located in Bern, is the second oldest international organisation worldwide and has around 260 staff members. It is the primary forum for cooperation between governments, regulators, Posts and other stakeholders of the global postal sector. The UPU sets the rules for international mail exchanges among its 192 member countries, develops technical standards and encourages the adoption of regulations among all postal sector players. The UPU also works to stimulate trade facilitation, social, financial and economic inclusion through the postal network. Member countries rely on the UPU for technical assistance to help them strengthen their postal network, processes and offerings. 15

16 The World Customs Organization (WCO) is an independent intergovernmental organisation whose primary mission is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of Customs Administrations worldwide. As the only intergovernmental organisation specialized in Customs matters, the WCO currently represents 182 Members (governments) across the globe at all stages of social and economic development. Being the global centre of Customs expertise and the voice of the international Customs community, the WCO provides an ideal forum for Customs administrations and their stakeholders to hold in-depth discussions, exchange experiences, and share best practices on a range of international Customs and trade issues. The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization fighting hunger worldwide and working towards the global goal of ending hunger by WFP is delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. Twothirds of its work is in conflict-affected countries where people are three times more likely to be undernourished than those living in countries without conflict. An average of 80 million people receive food assistance in around 80 countries each year by WFP while almost 15,000 people are dedicatedly working for the organisation. The World Health Organisation (WHO) is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends. More than 7000 people from more than 150 countries work for the Organisation in 150 WHO offices all over the world. 16

17 The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is the global forum for intellectual property policy, services, information and cooperation. A specialized agency of the United Nations, WIPO assists its 191 member states in developing a balanced international IP legal framework to meet society s evolving needs. It provides business services for obtaining IP rights in multiple countries and resolving disputes. It delivers capacity-building programs to help developing countries benefit from using IP. And it provides free access to unique knowledge banks of IP information. The World Trade Organization (WTO) deals with the global rules of trade between nations. Its main function is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible. Beginning life on 1 January 1995, the WTO succeeded the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade which had regulated world trade since Over the past 20 years, the WTO has made a major contribution to the strength and stability of the global economy, helping to boost trade growth, resolve numerous trade disputes and support the integration of developing countries into the trading system. Currently with 164 members, of which more than one-fifth are represented by least-developed countries, WTO activities are supported by a Secretariat of some 700 staff, led by the WTO Director-General. The Secretariat is located in Geneva, Switzerland, and the three official languages are English, French and Spanish. 17
