2 THE NEW FRONTIER I. The New Frontier became JFK s campaign promise to the American people II. JFK focused on the economy, education, medical care and space exploration

3 THE PEACE CORPS I. One of the first programs created by the New Frontier was the Peace Corps II. The Peace Corps is a volunteer organization that helps developing nations in Asia, Africa and Latin America

4 SPACE RACE I. During the Cold War the USA and USSR competed over who could get to space first II. October 1957 = Soviet Union launched first satellite à Sputnik 1 III. April 1961 = Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space IV. The American space agency (NASA) struggled to keep up with the Soviet Union

5 AMERICAN SPACE Armstrong EXPLORATION I. Scared of Soviet superiority in space the USA began pushing to put a man on the moon II. July 20, 1969, the U.S. successfully landed Apollo 11 and the first man on the moon III. The nation watched U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong as he took the first steps on the moon IV. The space race became an important area of competition during the Cold War One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind

6 TRAGEDY IN DALLAS

7 ASSASINATION OF JFK I. While visiting Dallas, TX JFK s motorcade was attacked by a lone sniper II. JFK was shot in the neck and then the head III. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors frantically tried to revive him IV. President Kennedy died on 11/22/63

8 LBJ BECOMES PRESIDENT I. The Vice-President, Lyndon Baines Johnson, became President after JFK s death II. Lee Harvey Oswald was charged with the murder of JFK A. He was shot by Jack Ruby while being transferred to jail III. This series of events led many to believe that JFK s assassination was a coverup A somber LBJ takes the oath of office aboard Air Force One with the Jackie next to him

10 JOHNSON S CARRIES ON JFK LEGACY I. As soon as Johnson took office he passed the tax-cut bill that Kennedy had sent to Capital Hill II. LBJ also worked to pass civil rights legislation proposed by JFK III. JFK s death assisted in the passage of many beneficial laws

11 CIVIL RIGHTS ACT OF 1964 I. In July of 1964, LBJ passed the Civil Rights Act through Congress II. The Act prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion or national origin, and granted the federal government new powers to enforce the law III. The Civil Rights Act made all people equal in the eyes of the law in the U.S.A. LBJ signs the Civil Rights Act as Martin Luther King watches

12 VOTING RIGHTS ACT 1964 I. A portion of the Civil Rights Act 1964 was to protect voting rights for all Americans II. The act prohibited literacy tests or other discriminatory practices for voting "By the way, what's the big word?" III. The act made sure that every person in the U.S.A. was able to vote

13 LBJ WINS IN 1964 I. LBJ won the 1964 election against Barry Goldwater by a landslide II. The Democrats continued to carry on many reforms proposed by JFK III. Johnson launched his own campaign promise to the American people known as the Great Society

15 BUILDING THE SOCIETY GREAT I. The Great Society was the program created by LBJ to address the growing problems in the USA II. It focused on 6 major reforms: A. Education B. Healthcare C. Housing D. Immigration Reform E. The Environment F. Consumer Protection

16 EDUCATION I. LBJ considered education the key to unlock the door to the Great Society II. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act provided $1 billion to help public schools buy textbooks and library materials III. This Act provided the first major federal funding for public education

17 HEALTHCARE I. LBJ and Congress enhanced Social Security by establishing Medicare and Medicaid II. Medicare provided health insurance and low-cost medical care to the elderly III. Medicaid provided health benefits to poor Americans

18 HOUSING Weaver I. LBJ and Congress spent money building thousands of units of lowrent public housing II. The Great Society established the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to ensure every American had a home III. HUD appointed the first black cabinet member named Robert Weaver

19 IMMIGRATION REFORM I. The Great Society also brought reform to immigration laws II. The Natural Origins Acts of the 1920s discriminated against immigrants outside of Western Europe III. The Immigration Act of 1965 opened the door for many non- European immigrants to settle in the U.S.

20 THE ENVIRONMENT I. The Great Society also sought to improve the environment II. The Water Quality Act of 1965 required states to clean up their rivers and lakes III. LBJ ordered the government to stop allowing corporations to pollute the American environment

21 CONSUMER PROTECTION I. Consumer protections laws were also passed during the 1960s II. Major safety laws were passed in the American auto industry seatbelts and safety equipment III. Also passed Wholesome Meat Act of 1967 IV. Americans can feel safer now in their homes, on the road, and at the supermarket

22 WARREN COURT I. Reforms were not limited to the President and Congress Warren II. The Judicial Branch led by the Supreme Court and Chief Justice Earl Warren made numerous rulings to protect the American people III. The Warren Court upheld American s Constitution rights on many occasions A. Outlawed prayer in public schools, made it illegal to sensor books, ensured representation in Congress was equal

23 WARREN COURT RULINGS I. In Mapp v. Ohio (1961) SCOTUS ruled that illegally seized evidence could not be used in court II. In Escobedo v. Illinois the SCOTUS ruled that the accused has the right to have an attorney present when questioned by police III. In Miranda v. Arizona the court ruled that all suspects must be read their rights before questioning

24 IMPACT OF GREAT SOCIETY I. The Great Society and the Warren Court changed the United States forever II. LBJ extended the of the federal government more than any president ever before III. The Great Society led to enormous social, economic and political changes that impact today s society
