1 Coolidge Club Blast #4 Campaign Preview HTML Source Plain Text Details News from the Notch View this in your browser Political leaders are like they rest of us, they aren't made of stone. It takes great courage for them to aspire to office, and great courage to offer their names at conventions. The picture above is the order for a telegram from Governor Calvin Coolidge. Coolidge was wiring Dwight Morrow, his old Amherst friend, towards the end of the GOP convention in Chicago. Coolidge was in Boston, where he had stayed, watching the convention from afar. From a post at the Blackstone Hotel in Chicago, Morrow had tried to get Coolidge nominated as presidential candidate for the GOP. Morrow, of course, had failed. Senator Warren G. Harding of Ohio was selected by the convention delegates on June 1/5

2 Senator Warren G. Harding of Ohio was selected by the convention delegates on June 12, The convention nominated Coolidge as candidate for vice president that same night. This telegram was sent the next morning, June 13. Coolidge fans: send us your input as to the meaning of the telegram. Our sense: Morrow and Coolidge, two classmates, wanted to get together to celebrate or plot some more, and also to get over their disappointment that Coolidge had not won the first slot Speaker Series Launch with Gov. Shumlin The Coolidge Foundation is thrilled to kick off its 2014 lecture series with a special event featuring Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin. The event, What Ails Vermont Is There a Cure to the Drug Epidemic? is presented in partnership with Norwich University and takes place Tuesday, April 8, from 4:00 6:00 p.m. in Plumley Armory on the Norwich University campus. Following Gov. Shumlin s remarks will be a panel of experts who will address the recently realized statewide issue of opiate addiction. This event is free and open to the public and includes a reception with light refreshments. Panelists include: Harry Chen, M.D., Commissioner, Vermont Department of Health, with perspectives on prevention. Colonel Tom L'Esperance, Vermont State Police Commander, with perspectives on law enforcement. 2/5

3 perspectives on law enforcement. David Orrick, Ph.D., Lecturer, School of Justice Studies and Sociology, who has been teaching a regular course on drug abuse and crime since 1979, which explores the challenges caused by the use of both legal and illegal drugs. Max Schlueter, Ph.D., School of Justice Studies and Sociology, and Director of the Vermont Center for Justice Research, who analyzes statewide crime data for the purpose of informing policy making. The panel will be moderated by Sarwar Kashmeri, trustee, Calvin Coolidge Memorial Foundation and Norwich University adjunct professor. April 12: Family Day & Presidential Hats Join us Saturday, April 12, from noon to 4:00 p.m. for Family Day at the Notch and a special program on presidential hats beginning at 2:00 p.m., led by education director Diane Kemble. Coolidge was a man of many hats from his suede hat for farming, top hats for formal occasions, a boater in the summer, and even an oversized cowboy hat to please his western hosts. Did you know he bought his vivacious wife her fashionable hats? We ll view several hats from the collection of the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation including three of President Coolidge s hats, two of Grace s, and several others from the Plymouth and Woodstock area. Visitors are welcome to wear their favorite hats, historical or otherwise. Refreshments follow. To go with the theme of the day, hands on activities in the classroom include making paper hats from noon until 2:00 p.m. Visitors of all ages can enjoy old time movies in front of the fireplace, explore historic Plymouth Notch with the Coolidge Quest and stop in at the Cheese Factory, which is offering a 15% discount for those wearing historic hats! Coolidge Cam No matter where you are in the world, you can view the beautiful scenery of Plymouth Notch courtesy of our Coolidge Cam. The newly installed camera shows you a live picture of Coolidge s own view in his day, looking east at the Green Mountains (although they are white this time of year!). We hope you will check out our webcam often. This webcam is a part of our big effort to bring Coolidge and the Notch to more Americans. 3/5
