You will be downvoted, mocked, ridiculed, and possibly banned. Reddit is a community of real people, and real people don t like feeling like they are being used to sell something. Promoting yourself on reddit can be extremely difficult, but it can be done. The secret to reddit marketing success is to be a redditor.

2 I visit reddit on a daily basis, and I have for years. I ve seen the poor souls that try reddit Marketing, only to be horribly humiliated. BUT, I ve also seen books, products, websites get tons of traffic from reddit. So what is the difference between the people who have huge success stories, and those who are traumatized by their reddit experience? Success on reddit comes from being part of the community! Being part of the community means sharing in their interests and passions. And guess what one thing is that they are passionate about? Hating self-marketing. If you don t have one already, you ll need a personal reddit account. I say personal because it s important that the community knows you are first and foremost a person, just like the rest of them. You can be a person with a product, but your interactions cannot be solely about that product. I ve seen too many Reddit accounts that are operated like business accounts. Now that you have an account, get involved. Subscribe to all the subreddits that interest you, and to all the ones that might be related to your book. Start posting interesting links and upvoting things you like. Each subreddit has its own rules and posting guidelines. Be sure to thoroughly read these, especially before posting anything related to your book. For example, one subreddit that will apply to some authors is r/uyawriters (Young Adult Writers). It is a no-promotion subreddit, so you couldn t just post a link to your book. BUT, it has a weekly AMA (Ask Me Anything) thread, where subscribers can ask an author questions about their book.

As a member of r/fantasy for almost five years, he was able to directly post his book, and do promotion through their AMAs. You definitely don t want to be banned before you ve even had the chance to build a reputation. Make sure everything you post is relevant to the subreddit. You will want to tailor your links and posts as much as you can, and this will involve doing research on the subreddits that you are thinking about posting to. Know the users, know your audience. Everything you post should be something that you enjoy and are interested in. Put your best foot forward! Don t share things just because you think it will get you karma. You have to post great content that you love! Reddit users love well written, in-depth posts, especially if they can tell that the OP (original poster) is excited about it. This will guarantee you a positive reputation on Reddit. When you do begin self- promotion, there will be people looking for any excuse to downvote your posts, report you, and ruin your reputation. Try to make that as difficult for them as possible! Thoroughly explain your post, and be honest about the content being yours. It is a good idea to comment on your own post even before someone else does. It will give you an opportunity to explain things further and get the conversation going. There will likely be well-meaning users offering criticism of your work. This is not a bad thing! It could actually give you a huge advantage. Learn as much from these users as you can. Ask them questions, making sure that your tone is as humble as possible. Emphasize that you actively follow the rules, and you genuinely desire to contribute to the community. Experienced redditors have a wealth of knowledge to offer. Be careful not to over-promote. Reddit has moderators and spam filters. It can be very risky to post the same link multiple times, even if it isn t in the same subreddit. The moderators may decide to ghost your account for this, meaning that no one will see your posts but you. Even if you never post the same link twice, it is a very good idea to space out when you post links to your own work. I would advise that self-promotion posts be spaced out by at least two weeks.
