2 About FPRI Mission The Foreign Policy Research Institute is dedicated to bringing the insights of scholarship to bear on the foreign policy and national security challenges facing the United States. It seeks to educate the public, teach teachers, train students, and offer ideas to advance U.S. national interests based on a nonpartisan, geopolitical perspective that illuminates contemporary international affairs through the lens of history, geography, and culture. Educating the American Public: FPRI was founded on the premise that an informed and educated citizenry is paramount for the U.S. to conduct a coherent foreign policy. Today, we live in a world of unprecedented complexity and ever-changing threats, and as we make decisions regarding the nation s foreign policy, the stakes could not be higher. FPRI offers insights to help the public understand this volatile world by publishing research, hosting conferences, and holding dozens of public events and lectures each year. Preparing Teachers: Unique among think tanks, FPRI offers professional development for high school teachers through its Madeline and W.W. Keen Butcher History Institutes, a series of intensive weekend-long conferences on selected topics in U.S. and world history and international relations. These nationally known programs equip educators to bring lessons of a new richness to students across the nation. Training the Next Generation of Thinkers: At FPRI, we are proud to play a role in providing students whether in high school, college, or graduate school with a start in the fields of international relations, policy analysis, and public service. Interns gain experience in research, editing, writing, public speaking, and critical thinking. Offering Ideas: We count among our ranks over 100 affiliated scholars located throughout the nation and the world. They are open-minded, ruthlessly honest, and proudly independent. FPRI scholars appear regularly in national and international media, offer testimony on Capitol Hill, and are consulted by U.S. government agencies Spring Calendar

Wednesday, April 11 Compulsion in Religion: Saddam Hussein, Islam, and the Roots of Insurgencies Samuel Helfont Senior Fellow, FPRI, Lecturer, University of Pennsylvania In his new book from Oxford University Press, Helfont investigates the roots of the religious insurgencies which erupted in Iraq following the American-led invasion in This book relies on access to the former regime s internal archives and secret files to challenge many of the underlying assumptions of American plans to occupy and rebuild Iraq. When the Americanled invasion destroyed the regime s authoritarian structures in 2003, it unleashed the forces that these structures were designed to contain, creating an atmosphere infused with religion, but lacking the checks provided by the former regime. Groups such as the Sadrists, al-qaida in Iraq, and eventually the Islamic State emerged out of that context to tear the country apart. Helfont received his Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies from Princeton University and his articles have appeared in Foreign Affairs, The New Republic, and other outlets Spring Calendar

Binger Senior Fellow in Global Governance, Council on Foreign Relations Moderated by John Nagl, Senior Fellow, FPRI, and Headmaster, The Haverford School In his new book, Patrick says that sovereignty is one of the most frequently invoked, polemical, and misunderstood concepts in politics. Some see sovereignty as requiring the avoidance of international attachments while others see preservation of sovereignty in steering global forces in a positive direction, particularly in tackling transnational problems like proliferation, terrorism, global pandemics, and climate change. How best to advance US national interests will be the focus of Patrick s talk. Tuesday, January 23 American Grand Strategy in the Age of Trump Hal Brands The Henry A. Kissinger Distinguished Professor of Global Affairs at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, Senior Fellow at FPRI Moderated by Michael Noonan, Director of Research, FPRI It can be argued that the rise of Donald Trump has created more uncertainty about America s role in the world than at any time in recent decades. At the same time, the geopolitical challenges to the US have grown in number and in severity. What role should the United States play in the world? In this talk, as in his book, Brands will reflect on this core question for all Americans and offer a guide for the perplexed. His earlier book, Making the Unipolar Moment: U.S. Foreign Policy and the Rise of the Post-Cold War Order, was rated one of the top books of the year in 2017 by Foreign Affairs magazine. He has served in the Pentagon as a special assistant to the secretary of defense for strategic planning. Foreign Policy Research Institute 12
