We ll consider empirical cases from across contexts and time to deepen our understanding of how social movements emerge, how they can lead to social change, and how they might provide insights into state and society. In particular we ll inquire into the US civil rights movement, women s rights movements, alter-globalization and environmental movements, religious movements, and nonviolent movements. We ll explore how social movement theory developed in relation to these and other movements, and how these movements might provide a comparative context to analyze our local cases. The analytical focus of this course will be on the relationship between states and social movements. Among other sociological perspectives we ll consider collective behavior, resource mobilization, political opportunity, and life-politics. Our discussions will also scrutinize the assumptions and limitations of social research methods. The course will have intensive readings, assignments, and class discussions. Requirements: Two exams (50%); one term paper (20%); three reading reflections (15%); class presentations and participation (15%). Prerequisite: Prior courses in the social sciences and humanities are recommended. Course Objectives By the end of this course, through various course requirements students are expected to demonstrate: 1) Comprehension of key concepts and debates in the sociological study of social movements, and the ability to compare and assess different perspectives. 1

2 2) Understanding of the trajectories of several social movements (listed earlier) and their connection to the development of social movement theory. 3) Ability to analyze a given empirical case by engaging different sociological perspectives. 4) Ability to engage various social research tools, such as, interviews, participant observations, and content analysis, to study a social movement. 5) Ability to relate sociological perspectives to emerging trends in collective action and social movements. Course Prerequisite(s) Prior courses in the social sciences and humanities are recommended. Course Requirements Two exams (25% each) 50% One term paper 20% Three reading reflections (5% each) 15% Class presentations and participation 15% Grading Scale A = 90% and above B = 80% to 89% C = 70% to 79% D = 60% to 69% F = Below 60% Guidelines & Policies 1) Please do assigned readings beforehand and come prepared to class with thoughtful comments and questions. 2) Be in class on time, and keep your cell phones and laptops turned off during class. Be courteous to others and avoid unnecessary disruptions. 3) I'll count your in-class writing responses as your attendance. I frequently ask for such responses, but not in every session. If you miss it, you miss it. 4) Turn in your assignments and papers in class when they are due. submissions or late submissions will not be accepted. 2

3 5) All assignments and papers must be typed (1.5 spacing; 12 point font) and proofread. Use standard formatting guidelines (choose any standard and stay consistent). 6) Use s for quick administrative communication only. For content and other course related issues, please see me after class or during office hours. 7) I'll post a separate document with details on class presentations, assignments, and term paper. We ll also discuss each of these items in class. 8) The exams cover everything from class lectures to assigned readings. They will have MCQs, short answer questions, and essays. The second exam is noncumulative. I don t normally offer make-ups. However, in the very exceptional cases, the make-ups given will be all essay based. 9) I don't curve grades.
