Visiting Professor International Cooperation Seminar I - SPECIAL TOPICS IN INTERNATIONAL PEACE AND SECURTY 1. Course Overview This course will analyze new challenges and tasks in international peace and security of today s world. It will start with overview of structural characteristics of today s international system and then focus on new threats to international peace and security and the related contentious issues drawing much international attention. The issues selected for in-depth analysis will include specific cases involving nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, terrorism and rule of law, human rights and democracy, responsibility to protect(r2p), the United Nations and international security enforcement mechanism, major regional disputes, changing security environment in Northeast Asia and major powers strategic competition, East Asian regional architecture, North Korea and peace regime on the Korean peninsula, etc. The course will take the format of seminar, interactive discussions, and case-teaching on topical issues based on practical experience and expertise accumulated through the instructor s diplomatic career. 2. Course Objectives The principal objective of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and analytical tools needed for comprehensive understanding of the most contentiously debated issues involving 1
2 international peace and security in the cotemporary international society. Aiming to help students develop their own perspectives on how to effectively address such issues, the course will put much emphasis on the practicality of the studies. The course would be beneficial to those students preparing for a career in the international fields such as diplomatic and/or civil service in governments or international institutions. 3. Requirements Students are expected to make presentations (15-20 minutes) at the class on the assigned topics and actively participate in interactive discussions. Each week s topic and presenters will be announced in advance in class. There will be mid-term and final examinations 4. Evaluation Class participation: 20% Presentation: 20% Examinations: 60% (Mid-term 30%, Final 30%) 5.
