1 COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA MONDAY, JUNE 7, 2004 SESSION OF TH OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY No. 33 SENATE MONDAY, June 7, 2004 The Senate met at 2 p.m., Eastern Daylight Saving Time. The PRESIDENT (Lieutenant Catherine Baker Knoll) in the Chair. PRAYER The Chaplain, Monsignor Francis Hudak, of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Mt. Carmel, offered the following prayer: Let us pray. Lord God, Creator of heaven and earth, by Your almighty power You have called each and every one of us into being. In reverence, we stand in Your presence. We are of the work of Your hands, fashioned a little less than a god. With prayerful hearts, we join ours with that of King David who declared in the Book of Psalms: When I see the heavens, the work of Your fingers, and the moon and the stars that You set in place, what are humans that You are mindful of them; yet, You have made them a little less than a god. In our unique and awesome relationship with You, made in Your image and likeness, we offer You this day the praise and adoration due to the glory of Your name. As we begin to engage in the work You have entrusted to us, we ask Your wisdom, guidance, and help. Ever mindful of the inspired word spoken in the Book of Psalms: Unless the Lord does the building, they labor in vain who do the building. We place ourselves under Your guidance and spirit. As legislators elected to serve the common good of our brothers and sisters in our beloved Commonwealth, we look to You for guidance and direction in the midst of our weaknesses and deficiencies. Bless our deliberations, sustain our energy, give wisdom to our judgments, integrity to our decisions, trust in the good will of our colleagues, a willingness to be challenged, an openness to the truth, a desire to serve conscientiously, a spirit of humility not to be self-serving, the courage to be just, steadfast adherence to the truth, and a sense of dedication to those we serve. Give us a sense of vocation, that our work is not a job but a sacred trust given to us by those who place confidence in our loving concern. May we use our talents and gifts for the praising of Your name and the good of our fellow men and women. Give us a loving heart, especially toward the poor, the needy, the homeless, the uneducated, the marginalized, the unemployed, and the handicapped. Help us always to give respect to each other's person and treat each other with dignity. As we Americans commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Allied Forces' invasion in Normandy, and as we gratefully recall the supreme sacrifice of our service men and women who have fought so courageously to preserve our freedoms, and as we are ever mindful of those brave men and women presently engaged in combat with those who terrorize our well-being, we beseech You to bestow on them and their families the reward we could never hope to render. Finally, O Heavenly Father, fill us with the joy and confidence that belongs to those who trust in You, and with the wisdom of the psalmist, we embrace this trust. Happy the man who puts not his trust in princes but in the law of the Lord. We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen. The PRESIDENT. The Chair thanks Monsignor Hudak, who is the guest today of Senator Gordner. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE (The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by those assembled.) JOURNAL APPROVED The PRESIDENT.
