5 Sons of the American Revolution Trivia Over its 129-year history, the SAR has admitted more than 202,000 members? Constitution Day, Flag Day, and Bill of Rights Day were established through the efforts of SAR. John D. Rockefeller was a member of SAR and is also the richest person in the history of the United States (adjusted for inflation). SAR Members have included 17 U.S. Presidents, 35 Medal of Honor Winners, 5 Nobel Peace Prize Winners, 1 United Kingdom Prime Minister (Sir Winston Churchill), Diplomats, Governors, Senators, Congressmen, Presidential Cabinet Secretaries, a King of Spain, and you and me! We are in good company! One of the 17 U.S. Presidents became a member Posthumously. U.S. Grant was a member, but died in 1895 which is four years before the founding of SAR. Theodore Roosevelt was a member of SAR and also signed the Congressional Charter for SAR as President of the United States An easy way to remember the founding of the SAR is to add 100 years to the inauguration of President George Washington. He was inaugurated in SAR was founded on April 30, William Osborne McDowell was the founder and member #1 of SAR. SAR was founded in Fraunces Tavern in New York City. Fraunces Tavern was one of the meeting places for the Sons of Liberty and served as General George Washington s New York headquarters during the American Revolution. This is also the location where George Washington bid farewell to his officers with the following words: "With a heart full of love and gratitude, I now take leave of you. I most devoutly wish that your latter days may be as prosperous and happy as your former ones have been glorious and honorable." ALSSAR SPRING BOM 2018, page 5

6 Fraunces Tavern still exists today and can be found at 54 Pearl Street, New York, New York. SAR has held a Congress every year of it s existence except for one. That was in 1945 due to World War II. There have been 114 Presidents General in SAR History. Presidents General have included General Horace Porter (Secretary to U.S. Grant and Ambassador to France), Governor Edwin Warfield (of Maryland), Harry T. Burn (Representative from Tennessee and Deciding vote in Tennessee to ratify the 19 th Amendment). SAR is one of only 92 non-profit organizations (Title 36 Corporations) chartered by the United States Congress. A moratorium on granting new charters was instituted in 1989 by the House Judiciary Committee. Although new charters do still occur, it is extremely rare. 11 Alabama Society Sons of the American Revolution Annual Meeting Minutes February 17, 2018 The 2018 Annual Meeting of the Sons of the American Revolution, Alabama Society, was held at The Legends Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, Legends Parkway, Prattville, AL on February 17, 2018, with President Harold (Hal) E. Thornton presiding; Bob Anderson, Senior Vice-President, Bruce A. Buehler, Secretary and Allen R. Herrod, Recording Secretary present. The membership of the ALSSAR attending the Annual Meeting were given the Printed Annual Meeting report book which contain the agenda, reports from the ALSSAR officers, chapter presidents, liaisons, committee reports, old and new business reports and the Ladies Auxiliary report. President Thornton called the meeting to order at exactly 8:30 am and asked Bruce Beuhler, the ALSSAR State Secretary to verify that we had a quorum. Secretary Beuhler stated that a quorum was present. The Rev. R. Jefferson Coker gave the invocation. The ALSSAR Color Guard presented the colors; followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Senior Vice- President Bob Anderson. The Colors were posted under the direction of G. Thomas Smith, ALSSAR Sergeant at Arms. ALSSAR President Hal Thornton then led the Pledge to the SAR. President Thornton then recognized guest from our National Society: Vice-President General of the Southern District, Tony L. Vets; National Secretary General, Warren M. Alter; Registrar General C. Bruce Pickette; Tennessee Society President, David Johnston; Louisiana State Trustees and former LASSAR President Tony Bo Vets; Mississippi State Society President, Toby Winston, Former Vide-President Generals from the State of Alabama which are also Past-Presidents of the ALSSAR; John Wallace, Jim ALSSAR SPRING BOM 2018, page 11

12 Maples, Michael Wells, Rod Hildreth and Lee Swart. Also, in attendance is Dr. Fred Olive, III, our ALSSAR Trustee. President Thornton also recognized former ALSSAR state presidents and NSSAR Minutemen to stand and be recognized. Greetings were given to all those in attendance by Tennessee Valley president, Millard Mac Moon from the Tennessee Valley Chapter of the ALSSAR which was in charge of this Annual Meeting. Greetings were also given to those in attendance for the first time. Compatriot James H. Maples, chairman of the awards committee, assisted by compatriot Allen Herrod, presented awards to the chapter presidents, distinguished service committee certificates, membership recruiting awards and the outgoing ALSSAR officers Special Presentations: Compatriot Michael Wells, chairman of the George M. and Stella M. Knight Essay contest announced the winners of the lower tier. The overall winner will be announced at the Annual Banquet. There were 4 entries in the contest with only 2 points separating each entry. This was a very close competition. Compatriot John Killian announced the winners of the Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest. There were over 1000 entries this year. Compatriot Rick Wells announced the 2 nd Place winner of the JROTC award. The 1 st place winner will be announced at the Annual Banquet. Compatriot Bob Anderson announced the 2 nd Place winner of the Moses Brochure Contest and the 1 st Place winner will be announced at the Annual Banquet. Compatriot Bobby Joe Seales presented a flag streamer for attendance at the 237 th anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens and attended the South Atlantic District Meeting. 13 Reports from the state officers, committee chairmen, chapter presidents, liaisons and state trustee were submitted earlier in the month in written form or and printed in the Annual book. Minutes of the October Board of Managers were approved and seconded. (9:13AM) Old Business: Compatriot Richard Tingle, Chairman of the Bylaws Committee, introduced the proposed changes that were discussed at the fall 2017 BOM. President Thornton asked that IF there was to be discussion about the changes, the discussion would be limited to 6 minutes for each by-law change and that the compatriot limit their discussion to 2 minutes each. These proposed changes were listed on pages in the Annual Book. 1 st Change the name of the Senior Vice President to Vice President No discussion- PASSED 2 nd Constitution, Article V, Meetings, Section 2 Wording change No discussion PASSED 3 rd Constitution, Article VII, Amendments Discussion on amendment Original Amendment Change This Constitution may be altered, amended or repealed only by not less than a two-thirds vote of the members Amendment change to the amendment change the wording amended or repealed by a vote of not less than two-thirds of the members PASSED Original amendment changed by the amendment. Fred Olive III ALSSAR President *After the Nominating Committee submitted the above nominees on 30 November 2017, Bruce Buehler resigned from the Endowment Committee. The Nominating Committee then selected Mac Moon to fill the unexpired two-year term. President Harold Hal E. Thornton called for nominations from the floor. Nominations were then moved to be closed by Compatriot Mike Wells and seconded by Compatriot Price Legg. Nominations for ALSSAR nominations for passed. Compatriot Ron Bearden presented the following resolution: A Resolution by the Alabama Society of the Sons of the American Revolution Whereas, in July 2017, the NSSAR Genealogist General issued guidance that men in different states may submit their Family Plan applications through the same State Society under the same transmittal form; and, Whereas, under this guidance, any State Society may, with notification to another State Society, process applications for that non-processing State Society; and, Whereas, while such guidance also noted that the receiving State Society should be informed and must receive their dues and other mandatory fees; and, Whereas, the Chancellor Generals of the National Society have consistently ruled that in accordance with the National Society Constitution and Bylaws, it is a State Society which has the right to admit or not admit members ALSSAR SPRING BOM 2018, page 15

16 as it sees fit, and therefore, the Genealogist General s guidance is inconsistent with the Bylaws of the National Society; and, Whereas, in December 2017, the Genealogist General then clarified that receiving State Societies and Chapters should be more than merely be informed, and he therefore, in conjunction with the Chancellor General, offered to Chapters and State Societies a Family Application Approval Form For A Non-Processing State Society, to be used with New Member and/or Supplemental applications in a Family Plan transmittal, where the prospective member does not intend to be a member of the transmitting State Society, and would be first approved by the receiving Chapter and State Society; and, Whereas, such guidance and clarification remains in conflict with National Society Bylaw No. 2 (State Societies and Chapters), Section 2; to wit, each State Society shall regulate all matters pertaining to its own affairs, subject to the provisions of the Constitution and Bylaws of the National Society; and, Whereas, application costs would be increased if applicants may intentionally or unintentionally pay processing fees of both the processing State Society and the non-processing State Society, where such fees exist; and, Whereas, (1) the guidance issued by the Genealogist General is inconsistent with the Bylaws of the National Society, and, (2) the guidance issued could also be applied to stand alone New Member applications, in addition to Family Plan applications, and, (3) a New Member and/or Supplemental application, whether a part of a Family Plan or not, must be signed by the State Registrar and the State Secretary, and these signatures should be of the State Society being joined, and, (4) procedures and guidelines of the non-processing State Society could be bypassed intentionally or unintentionally, and the non-processing State Society would be compelled to admit the prospective member in order for the application to be processed at the National Society, Therefore, be it resolved, (1) that the Alabama Society of the Sons of the American Revolution will not give permission for any other State Society to process and/or submit any application for the Alabama Society, or accept any prospective member or members for which any application was not transmitted to the National Society by the Alabama Society, and, (2) that the Alabama Society will not process applications for any other State Society. Passed at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Alabama Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, February 17, 2018 State Secretary Bruce Buehler announced that new applications have been approved and received for Tennessee Valley, Little River and Shoals Chapter. 17 Compatriot Mike Wells announced the seminar sponsored by the Alabama Genealogical Society and the First Families of Alabama that will be held at Samford University on March 24, David Rencher from FamilySearch will be the featured presenter. Compatriot Killian recognized the judges of the poster contest: NSSAR Sec. Gen. Warren Alter; Compatriot Tony Vets, LASSAR; Compatriot Winston, MSSSAR; and Compatriot Johnston, TNSSAR. Compatriot C. Bruce Pickette emphasized our Financial Forecast of donations to the following organizations: ALCAR, Blue Star Salute, SAR Foundation, NSSAR Library, Endowment Application Fees and Sanford University. Total Liabilities $2,809. President Hal Thornton asked for those committee chairs with information that was not included in their reports to come and present such items: Chaplain John Wallace: Check in the amount of $800 from the Endowment Fund for youth programs Chaplain Bob Anderson: Over 30 brochures to be judged and 2 chapters submitted brochures. Chaplain Coker: William Elliot Free, III of the Cullman chapter passed away since the report was submitted. Compatriot Bruce Kilgore: Americanism spreadsheets are due March 1. Send them by before this time. Compatriot McKinley: Contribution made of $ to benefit the society. Compatriot Olive: This year the ALSSAR will be able to purchase brochures because of matching donation with the State of Alabama, GWEF and the ALSSAR. Compatriot Maples: The ALSSAR website receives approximately 6000 hits per day. The old newsletters are on the website, however some of the older newsletters are missing. Please Compatriot Anderson asked to meet with all the newly elected officers, and appointed members of the executive committee at 3:30. Compatriot Alexander: Oration contest will take place at 11:00 am. There will be 4 candidates. All are welcome. Compatriot Killian: Chapters pick up their respective posters from the contest. Compatriot Pickette commended Compatriot Ron Beardon for his work in the genealogy workshop and work as State Registrar. ALSSAR SPRING BOM 2018, page 17

18 President Thornton special thanks to the Ladies Auxiliary for their support to the ALSSAR and a special thanks to the Tennessee Valley Chapter Ladies Auxiliary for the hospitality room. He also reminded us of the Orations Contest following the meeting and the GWEF luncheon at 12:00. Following the luncheon, we will have new members inducted into the GWEF and following that we will have the Remembrance Service for those compatriots that have died during the year. We will also have the History Teacher of the Year Award presented at the luncheon by the Black Warrior River Chapter. Rev. Jeff Coker gave our benediction and the meeting was adjourned. 20 PRESIDENT S REPORT Spring BOM 12 May 2018 It has been a real whirlwind of activity since the Annual Business Meeting and Convention. Kay and I attended the Spring Leadership meeting in Louisville 1-4 March where we had the opportunity to visit with old friends from across our great nation and meet new ones. If you have not been to a Leadership meeting, then I urge you to go to one if possible and learn how our Society does business and the exciting things that are happening. On March 9 Kay and I attended the Alabama Society Daughters of the American Revolution State Convention. I had the privilege to bring greetings from the Alabama Society SAR at the opening ceremony. On March 14 I had the honor of presenting a JROTC to a young cadet at Columbia High School in Huntsville, Al. If you ever have an opportunity to present one of these awards, please do so. You will be very proud at what these young people accomplish and it will give you faith in our country s future. We then went to the Mississippi State Convention in Olive Branch, Ms., March 16-17, where I brought greetings to our Mississippi Compatriots, renew old acquaintances and make new one. On March 20, I had to honor of being the speaker at the Birmingham Chapter meeting. On March 23 I had to honor and privilege to be the speaker at the Tennessee Valley Chapter Banquet and to install their new officers. It was then on to the Tennessee State Convention March in Knoxville. On April 2, I had the honor to give a presentation, The fourteen Forgotten Presidents to the Decatur Alabama Rotary Club. Then on April 10 I was the speaker at the Gen. John Archer Elmore Chapter where I gave a presentation on the Battle of Blackstock s Plantation: Tarleton s First Taste of Defeat. It was a wonderful visit and this Chapter is doing great things. On April 15 I had the opportunity to visit the Shoals Area Chapter and answer questions about how our Society function and its processes and procedures. Then on April 20 it was on to the Louisiana Society State Convention and the Southern District Meeting where Compatriot Colin Wakefield was nominated to be the next Southern District Vice President General. He will be elected at the Annual Congress in Houston in July. On April 26 we received the sad news that our Compatriot and Past State President Hal Thornton had passed away suddenly. 21 Alabama Society Trustee Report Spring 2018 The Alabama Society had a wonderful convention earlier this spring. I encourage you to attend, participate, and become involved in our upcoming Congress in Houston, and the Fall & Spring Board of Managers meetings. These are opportunities for you to learn about the various activities of SAR at the different levels. I have attended a number of chapter meetings. I encourage you to visit other chapters to see what they are doing. They very well may have new ideas which you might bring to your chapter. Check the Society Calendar on our website so you know when and where other chapters meet. Come visit with them. Join us in helping the Alabama Society to stay a Strong and Unified Society. Your state officers and others compatriots are great resources for speakers for your chapter meetings. Also be sure to check out chapter resources you find on your Alabama website. There is a Current Listing of Recent Chapter Speakers (maintained by Bob Doherty), and a Chapter President Leadership Guide to aid chapter officers and members in chapter activities. Has your chapter updated its information on the state website? The website is a major point of contact for compatriots and prospective members finding you. Did you know that every year at the DAR Congress they present a $500 award to the DAR State Society that wins the DAR/SAR Award? On our website you will find forms which help us to maintain an accurate record of the DAR members who assist us in obtaining new members. Remember DAR members are great contacts for new members for your chapter. 22 VICE-PRESIDENT S REPORT Spring BOM 12 May 2018 I am pleased to report that I attended the Spring Leadership 2018 meeting in Louisville, KY. during the weekend of March 2, It was my first Leadership Meeting. I enjoyed it very much as it was very educational as to how our national committees work. In addition it was enlightening to learn more about the business and procedures of the National Society. The small committee meetings allowed for the opportunity to get to talk and interact with our members from around the country. I would strongly encourage you to attend one of these meetings. In addition, I have been working with various officers of the ALSSAR and Chapters to address various issues, concerns and goals. Please feel free to contact me if I can assist you in anyway. 23 Alabama Society Secretary Report for the Board of Managers Meeting 12 May, 2018 On or about 15 June 2017, then President Harold Thornton, notified me the current elected Alabama Society Secretary had resigned. I told him I would fill the position and was re-elected during the Alabama Society Convention and Annual Meeting. Since assuming the position I have taken many steps to stabilize and provide service of the Secretary position within the Alabama Society. One of the first tasks I accomplished was to validate the Alabama Society Membership Roster with the National Society Database. It was validated. The Alabama Society and the National Membership Data are in 100% agreement with each other; since that time both data sources remain in agreement Society member Dues I m happy to announce after the Alabama Society annual report was sent to the National Society the Alabama Society did not owe any funds to the National Society following the reconciliation. Following the reconciliation I have been busy with reinstatements, Reporting Alabama Society members who have recently deceased and transfers in and out of the Society and many other individual issues. Our starting numbers, following the reconciliation, was 125 members lost and retaining ~ 1,096 members. Our current active member position stands at 1134 members. We have lost an unusual number of members to death early this year. The last few weeks I have been working many reinstatements and transfers. Another major task I undertook was to update the Alabama Society Position Roster. I have sent numerous versions requesting corrections to data points in the roster. I received comments back and made the changes. Once the updates have been accomplished I send out an updated version to the Officers, Committees and Chapters for their use and further corrections. The position roster is a very useful tool since it provides the names of principle players with their mailing address, phone number and address. However, there will always be changes to addresses, phone numbers, and etc., etc. When you find data that needs to be updated please call me or send n so I can update my master roster for the Society to use when I send the next updates. 24 As the Alabama Society Secretary, my main focus is to keep the membership status up-to-date. I strongly request when there is a change of status for a member please send me the change. I will update the Society membership roster and inform the National Registrar to make changes in the National Database I do not have permissions to make. I strongly urge chapters to purge old data from their chapter roster. If you have prior members or deceased members (prior to current year activity) still listed on your rosters please delete them or move them from your active members. Move them to another location on your roster and identify them by their status. There was much time spent, during the reconciliation period, to sort through many chapter rosters to figure out who was still active in the chapters. It is OK to keep the data if you choose. 25 RECORDING SECRETARY S REPORT Spring BOM 12 May 2018 Since assuming the Recording Secretary position in February of this year my time has been focused on the tasks associated with the Spring BOM Meeting. However, before anything else, I wish to thank Bruce Buehler and Allen Herrod for their guidance and direction as I learn more about ALSSAR and the Recording Secretary position. The Recording Secretary Brain Book, originally created by Bruce Buehler, has proven to be invaluable. I hope that each officer position has an instruction manual that comes with the position. If not, I would certainly recommend that each officer consider creating one for those future officers who may be required to learn on the job. I will have the Recording Secretary s Brain Book with me at the BOM if anyone wishes to review it. Preparation for the Spring BOM Meeting has included putting together the Meeting Notice. I used the existing Registration Form and Map/Directions and then distributed to the BOM Distribution List. I updated the registration list upon receipt of forms and checks, ed reminders to the distribution list of upcoming deadlines, received reports, and compiled the BOM Book. I coordinated attendance with Donna Wells, Ladies Auxiliary President, as well. I acquired a voice recording device for the upcoming BOM meeting where I plan to record all proceedings, take notes, and then use the recording to fine tune the minutes from the meeting. Upon completion of the meeting, I will compile all of the minutes, seek approval from President Anderson, then distribute. This year s State Conference meeting in February was my first to attend. What a joy it was to meet the many members of our organization from around the State in a celebration of our joint history as Compatriots. Next up for the Recording Secretary is the compilation of minutes from the BOM, then on to creation and distribution of the Dues Cards. Since the last report, amounts collected for 2018 dues were paid to NSSAR, and remaining convention expenses were paid along with cash awards for youth contests and related travel expenses paid by the Alabama Society. The projected future cash balance estimate (included in last Treasurer s Report) of $20,000 from the annual meeting has been surpassed. The current balance is over $24,000 as of this date. 30 NSSAR Registrar General s Report - Bruce Pickette The Houston Congress is only a little over two months from now and I hope you will consider making plans to attend if you have not done so. Congress is always a great time and I m looking forward to it, just as I am looking forward to attending this, our Board of Managers meeting. I was gratified to receive the endorsement of the National Nominating Committee at the Spring Leadership Meeting in March for a second term as Registrar General. Although anyone can still run from the floor at Congress, the endorsement and your support mean a lot to me and I hope to be reelected. My thanks to the chapters and those who took time to send in their own endorsements for me. I ll be headed to Newport News, Virginia, after Congress to attend the Atlantic Middle States (AMS) Association Conference in August, as well as other District and State meetings in the Fall. There are seven state societies in AMS. As I travel and meet the Compatriots of our Society, I am proud to represent my home state of Alabama and often relate our practices as examples for others. I am thoroughly enjoying my time as Registrar General and stay busy with questions and issues on a daily basis. Some are straight forward and easy to answer, while some issues require much coordination with others from around the Society. We have established that DAR was the first new member application approved after 1/1/85, so any new member DAR paper or later can be used AS LONG AS the service or lineage on that paper is not RED FLAGGED or IN QUESTION. We have also established that any DAR Supplemental RC with an Ad Volume number of 622 or higher may also be used with the same disclaimer as the new member papers. Some older DAR Papers may meet the current Genealogical Proof Standard, even though they may have been approved prior to 1/1/85. 36 Chancellor s Report May 4, 2018 Re: Use of Weapons by A Non-Affiliated Person or Group of the ALSSAR On April 12, 2018, in an to the Board of Managers of the Alabama Society Sons of the American Revolution (ALSSAR), President Robert Anderson asked the Chancellor to research the liability impacts of having non-affiliated person(s) or group(s) conduct "live fire" of weapons, including cannons, at a state or chapter sponsored Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) event. For clarification, Compatriot Hal Thornton in the above referenced chain, stated that "'Live Fire', in this instance, with black powder weapons, means that the weapon is loaded with black powder but no ball (bullet), and fired." The ALSSAR has no coverage for any type of "Live Fire" exercise, and under Item Ill the current liability policy for the ALSSAR underwritten by State Farm Fire and Casualty Company, Section A(l) of Exclusions, specifically states: "The Insurer will not defend any Claim or pay Loss or Defense Costs...resulting from... any actual or alleged bodily injury, sickness, mental anguish, emotional distress, disease or death of any person or destruction of any tangible property including loss of use thereof.." Research by the Chancellor has returned little information in terms of what the actual liability could be if the society had a non-affiliated person or group conduct live fire at state or chapter sponsored events. Nor has any source been found as to whether an non-affiliated, outside agent is prohibited from participating in a SAR sponsored event. The national society Color Guard Handbook does provide for regulation of Guardsmen who participate in a SAR sponsored event Bullet points seven (7) and eight (8) provide if any Guardsmen is wearing polyester and who will be participating or standing in close proximity to a firing squad be asked to defer participation or move to a safe location. Further, the appropriate safety equipment is required for all firearms, including a flash guard and frizzen cover. Any Guardsmen without safety equipment will not be permitted to carry their muzzle-loader at any SAR event; local, state or national. With the realization the only way to have zero liability with respect to outside agents conducting live fire is to prohibit them entirely, the Chancellor has set forth the following recommendations for consideration by the board of managers for any chapter or state SAR event in which live fire is to be conducted by an outside agent: l) Follow all local, state and federal laws with respect to discharging any firearm(s) or artillery weapons. 37 2) Inform local authorities (if applicable) prior to the event in which a live fire will be conducted. 3) Conduct due diligence in confirming the non-affiliated person or group has had proper training and attained the appropriate certification for the discharge or operation of the firearm or artillery weapon to be used. 4) A copy of the SAR Color Guard Handbook highlighting the "Health & Safety Regulations" shall be provided to the non-affiliated person or group prior to the event being held. 5) A SAR safety offcer shall be present at the SAR event to ensure the non-affliated person or group is properly conforming to the "Health & Safety Regulations" of the SAR Color Guard Handbook. 6) The non-affliated person or group must sign a "Participant Release Form & Waiver of Rights", which shall be approved by the board of managers and attached hereto. 7) Any observer, which includes all persons not actively discharging the firearm or artillery weapon, must stand at least a distance of 20 feet behind and not to the side of, the muzzle. 38 PARTICIPANT RELEASE FORM & WAIVER OF RIGHTS BY A NON AFFILIATED PERSON OR GROUP OF THE ALABAMA SOCIETY SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION Please read this carefully as you are waiving certain legal rights by signing this Participant Release Form. Each Participant must complete an individual form. I HEREBY ASSUME ALL RISKS OF PARTICIPATING IN THE ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS TO WHICH THIS AGREEMENT (hereinafter the Agreement ) PERTAINS AND WITH REGARD TO MY PRESENCE IN AND AROUND THE ALABAMA SOCIETY OF THE SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION ( ALSSAR ) SPONSORED EVENT TO WHICH THIS AGREEMENT PERTAINS, as herein described, including by way of example but not limitation, any risks that may arise from negligence or carelessness on the part of the persons or entities being released and any dangerous or defective equipment items, facilities or property used, owned, occupied, controlled or maintained by them. The activities and events to which this Agreement pertains (collectively referred to herein as Activities ) include my presence and all activities on, in or near any property owned, operated of otherwise associated with ALSSAR, including but not limited to the [INSERT NAME OF BATTLEFIELD, CEMETERY OR SITE], and all travel to and from such properties. For example, but not by way of limitation, the Activities may include reenactments, tours and spectatorship. This Agreement shall be construed broadly to provide a release and waiver to the maximum extent permissible under applicable law. I certify that I am physically fit, have sufficiently prepared or trained for participation in the Activities, and have not been advised not to participate by qualified medical personnel. I certify that there are no health related reasons, problems or concerns which would preclude or make unadvisable my participation in the Activities. I also hereby take action for myself, my executors, administrators, heirs, next of kin, successors, and assigns as follows: A) I WAIVE, RELEASE AND DISCHARGE to the extent possible by law, from any and all liability, including but not limited to, liability arising from the negligence or fault of the entities or persons released, for my death, disability, personal injury, property damage, property theft, or actions of any kind which may hereafter occur during or in connection with the Activities THE FOLLOWING ENTITIES OR PERSONS: The ALSSAR and any and all of its employees, directors, consultants, Members of the Board of Managers, volunteers, representatives, agents, assigns, successors, contractors, suppliers, vendors, event sponsors, co occupants of any ALSSAR facility or property and donors; B) I INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS the ALSSAR and any and all of its employees, directors, consultants, Members of the Board of Managers, volunteers, representatives, agents, assigns, successors, contractors, suppliers, vendors, event sponsors, co occupants of any ALSSAR facility or property and donors with regard to any claim that my participation in the Activities or other actions or inactions gave rise to any claim or otherwise causes liability. 39 C) I acknowledge that there is a possibility that subsequent to the execution of this Agreement, including but not limited to the release herein, I may discover facts or incur or suffer claims which were unknown or unsuspected at the time this Agreement was executed, and which if known by me at that time may have materially affected my decision to execute this Agreement. I am assuming any risk of such unknown facts and such unknown and unsuspected claims. 41 Genealogist Report for the Board of Managers Meeting 12 May, 2018 The primary duty of the Genealogist is to serve in an advisory capacity to the Registrar and assist in the preparation of applications for membership when called upon to do so. The State Registrar has requested that I assist by reviewing online applications sent in, make a quick determination as to the validity of the line, and forward information to a local chapter. Doing this requires having access to the State Dashboard, and I am in the process of obtaining such access. We have a number of potential applications in the online system, and upon obtaining the proper access, I will start the process reviewing the online applications, determining which applicants have submitted applications through normal channels, and forwarding to Chapter Registrars as appropriate applications in the online system. I am available to assist our Chapters, as needed, with applications and research questions. Being located in Montgomery, I am convenient to the Alabama State Archives. While my primary focus as Genealogist is the application process, once an application has been approved, I believe we need to focus on getting our new members involved. We need, either on a state or local chapter level, a program designed to activate, educate and involve new members during their first year. This is patterned after the old Jaycee Springboard Program. Our goal for each new member should not merely be to have an additional name on the roster, but to get each new member involved in Chapter activities. By getting new members involved, we are more likely to not only retain the new member, but also give our chapters an increased ability to better serve our community. England, Ph.D. Narrative: Immediately after the annual convention and business meeting, I attended the Spring Leadership Conference in Louisville. I attended meetings of the color guard, and living history, reenactment and historic sites committees. Concerns from the committees included authenticity of uniforms and drill as well as a discussion of appropriate sources for historic site interpretation. I have believed for some time that these items could be addressed through the living history demonstration at American Village in cooperation with the color guards of the state society. I will be happy to assist any color guards in the use of authentic designs for uniforms and drill for either the King s 1764 manual of arms or Von Steuben s Blue Book of I completed a review of Brothers At Arms: American Independence and the Men of France and Spain Who saved It by Larrie D. Ferreiro to the state society newsletter as well as an introduction to my program for history with the society. A paper titled What Hatchett Got Wrong and Right was accepted for presentation at the annual conference of the Alabama Association of Historians. On April 12 th Past State Society Fred Olive introduced me to personnel with the Samford University Special Collection. He briefed me on acceptable materials to be housed in the collection s archives. 45 LADIES AUXILIARY OF THE ALABAMA SOCIETY SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION PRESIDENT S REPORT FOR May 12, 2018 The Ladies Auxiliary s Mission Statement is to support both the National and Alabama State Society by furthering their goals and activities, by encouraging membership and raising funds to support their objectives. The Ladies Auxiliary has 34 members as of April 1, We encourage all compatriots to share their SAR interests with their spouses and we welcome them to our organization. We meet three times a year during the ALSSAR Spring Board of Managers meeting, ALSSAR State Convention, and the ALSSAR Fall Board of Managers meeting. Our revenues are generated from State and National dues and proceeds from the ALSSAR State Convention Basket Silent Auction. Our SAR State Convention LAALSSAR Basket Silent Auction is our primary fund raiser for the year. In February 2018 we supported the Alabama Society with a $1500 donation for their Youth Programs. We continue to make the blankets at our meetings and several have been given to female and male veterans in facilities throughout the State. This year the State Conference was held at the American Village in Liberty Hall and had the highest attendance in recent years. It was a one day event with a reasonably priced $10 hot buffet lunch. 48 was a maximum two hour drive from most locations except Lower Alabama and we encouraged all SARs and DARs to join us and bring their young people. C.A.R. Membership was not required. Senior State Treasurer Compatriot Bill Clement took care of reservations and we are appreciative of his service. After lunch we had an award winning interactive program on Our American Presidents by the noted patriotism actress Karla Stamps. I was amazed how so many of our children were knowledgeable about the young lives of our American Presidents. There were many that were top scholars. SAR State President Bob Anderson brought greetings and participated in all sessions. He emphasized the SAR Youth programs and gave our members details about participating. He also gave recognition to Miss Anne Cain of the La Fayette C.A.R. Society in Tuscaloosa for being an SAR Chapter and a State winner. We were honored that Connie and Ed Grund attended State Conference and installed our new officers. Their longtime friendship and support of C.A.R. is sincerely appreciated. -2- Also during C.A.R. State Conference we elected new officers for the coming year. Our State President is Anders Kinney, II of Huntsville s John Hunt Society. The 1 st VP is young SAR Member Compatriot William Cain, Jr. of La Fayette Society in Tuscaloosa and Black Warrior SAR. Will was an early college entrant who quickly earned associate degrees and is pursuing further studies. He is also volunteer fireman and EMS certified. The 2 nd VP is Miss Lillian Pennington of the Capt. John Farrar Society of Athens. She is a gifted writer who documented the early founders and settlers of her town for Bicentennial publications and placed 3 rd in the DAR National Poetry Contest as well as 1 st in the State and SE Regional DAR Contests. She is a student athlete as well as a candidate for the Girl Scout Gold Award. Pres. Kinney s State Project is to provide Colonial Benches for the American Village. His State Theme is Preserve our Past and Create a Better Future. The State Motto is Excellence in all we do. Anders plans to visit Societies throughout the State presenting his programs. He is currently a high school student in Madison, Alabama and is active in the Latin Club, Biology Club, Air Force JROTC, JROTC Saber Team, Student Government Association, Beta Club and National Honor Society. Future plans are to become a physician-surgeon. President Kinney was recently installed at Mount Vernon during the National Convention where he also participated in all activities and events. Senior State President Thomas was appointed by the Senior National Board of Management to serve his second two year term and was also installed. Many changes in State methods, procedures, and governance are anticipated. Application papers for many new C.A.R. members are in progress thanks to SAR and DAR members throughout Alabama who are sponsoring their children and grandchildren. SAR member participation and support in all local and state C.A.R. activities is welcomed and encouraged. We have three other SARs that are C.A.R. 50 Alabama Cemetery Preservation Alliance Liaison Report May 1, 2018 The Alabama Cemetery Preservation Alliance (ACPA) is a non-profit organization founded in 2001, dedicated to the efforts of encouraging the long-term maintenance, preservation, and conservancy of ALL Alabama cemeteries. As your representative to this organization, I serve as an ex-officio member of the Alabama Cemetery Preservation Alliance (ACPA) Board of Directors along with representatives of the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH), the Alabama Historical Commission (AHC), and the University of Alabama Cartographic Research Lab. The Board of Directors meets quarterly and I attended my first meeting on April 13, 2018 at the Alabama Department of Archives and History in Montgomery. The meeting s main concern was to finalize plans for the 2018 Annual Workshop and Membership meeting to be held on May 12, 2018 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The ACPA website contains information on the Workshop and information to assist individuals and groups in maintaining and preserving their community and family cemeteries. You can find information on repairing headstones, fences and landscaping; setting up a non-profit association to support the perpetual care of your cemetery; and much more information to help in this endeavor. The ACPA is comprised of a network of volunteer County Representatives, throughout the state of Alabama, who are available for contact via the ACPA website, and a membership comprised of dedicated and concerned people across the United States. Obviously, members of the Sons of the American Revolution are invited to join the ACPA and help support their mission, volunteer as an ACPA County Representative and to register any cemetery that is located within the state of Alabama in the ACPA Cemetery Register. 52 ENDOWMENT FUND COMMITTEE REPORT BOARD OF MANAGERS MEETING 12 MAY 2018 The Endowment Fund Committee is pleased to report that the ALSSAR Endowment Fund held by the Community Foundation of South Alabama, continues to grow. As of this writing (4/30/2018) the Fund is value at: $47, (Market Value) $50.00 in donations since February. $43, in donations since its inception on 26 August The Endowment Fund Committee is comprised of 3 members: John Wallace, Mack Moon, and J.L. Gibson. The goals and mission of the Endowment Fund Committee is to have and to grow a fund that will assist in funding the wonderful youth programs of ALSSAR. Since the restructuring of the Endowment Fund in 2015, the fund has been able to give back over $ back to the ALSSAR to provide additional funding for our youth programs. These funds given back to the ALSSAR has been made possible by two distinctive actions: 1. The assets held by the ALSSAR Endowment Fund are managed under the care of the Community Foundation of South Alabama (CFSA). They have done a great job of assisting our state society in managing this important revenue generating fund. There are many donation and tax tracking tools they provide. It is easy for a patron to donate to the Endowment Fund while receiving the necessary paperwork and tax information patrons may need for tax purposes. These donation and tax tracking tools are valuable tools that the ALSSAR did not have in years past. The CFSA is also able to accept many types of tangible assets as donations as well as credit / debit and other electronic forms of payments. These are just a few, however important, examples of how the CFSA supports the ALSSAR in the management of the Endowment Fund. ALSSAR SPRING BOM 2018, page 52

The Endowment Fund Committee understands there are many programs in which we are asked to contribute too. All programs play an important role in making the SAR the strong organization that it is. This year there were 4 chapters who participated in the George S and Stella M Knight Essay contest. The Chapters were Birmingham Chapter, Black Warrior Chapter, Richard Henry Lee Chapter and the Tennessee Valley Chapter. In preparation for next year s contest, please begin now by appointing a chairman for the essay contest. Plan on contacting schools in late August so the students have ample time to choose a topic and begin their research and writing of their essay. 57 Alabama Society Outreach Education Spring 2018 BOM Report Last year the General John Archer Elmore Chapter submitted an educational power point presentation for consideration for national distribution by the National SAR Education Committee for educational outreach for schools and SAR chapters across the U.S. The power point presentation was entitled, The Fourteen Forgotten Presidents and was original created and authored by Compatriot Bill Stone, a former Alabama Society state president. The content presentation was directed and designed to target two specific educational levels with one educational level being targeted for fourth and fifth graders in public, private schools and home schools and the other more advanced format targeted specifically for adults. The adult format of the Fourteen Forgotten Presidents was created by Compatriot Don Robertson, former chapter president of the Cahaba-Coosa Chapter of the Alabama Society who modified the original material designed for fourth and fifth graders created by Stone and added considerable more complex historical and subjective content. The Fourteen Forgotten Presidents (both versions) was the first educational outreach material selected for the SAR National Educational Outreach Initiative for nation-wide distribution by the National Educational Committee which put the Alabama Society front and center regarding educational outreach at the national, state and chapter level for This year the Alabama Society is front and center once again for 2018 with the introduction of a new power point presentation entitled Horses of the American Revolution created by Mrs. Shannon Hembree, daughter of current Alabama Society state president, Robert Anderson. The educational material is being sponsored by the Tennessee Valley Chapter of the Alabama Society. This wonderful and historical power point presentation on Horses of the American Revolution is being submitted to the National Educational Committee as a possible candidate for nation-wide distribution. A copy of Horses of the American Revolution has been given to the NSSAR for review and consideration. Mrs. Hembree has given permission for usage of all portions of the educational presentation by the NSSAR and has also agreed to reformat the content material for different age levels should it be chosen this year for national distribution. These are two fine examples of our state society s efforts toward creating patriotic and historical outreach education for mass audience s which show the Alabama Society s commitment to national outreach education by its chapters and membership. We are asking for more chapters and more members to get involved in creating many more patriotic and historical educational programs for educational outreach for the SAR. Your chapter or some of your chapter membership may have already been working on such a program. If so, I would be very interested in talking with you and helping you get started in submitting your work to the NSSAR for possible national recognition and distribution. 58 PATRIOT DOORS COMMITTEE May 12, 2018 Jim Maples Chairman Rod Hildreth The Alabama Society raised $14,000 approximately 14 years ago for the Patriot Doors to be part of the Chapel being constructed at The American Village. On either side of the inner entry way to the Chapel are plaques bearing the names of Patriots either buried in Alabama or associated with Alabama through SAR members. The initial listing consisted of 2531 names. The listing of Patriots did not stop with this initial listing of 2531 names. As new members were accepted and existing members filed supplemental applications, names were added to the database. The second set of plaques contained approximately 150 new names. The third and last set of plaques to be added most recently contained 275 names. Names continue to be collected with the intent to continue to add to the plaques. We currently have 376 additional names for the Patriot Doors which have been given to Compatriot Rod Hildreth to have plaques made. Unfortunately, when the third set of plaques were added there was not enough room to add all of them. Until more space can be made available, we cannot add more plaques to the Patriot Doors but we will continue to have them made until space is found. James H. The chapter president or his designee is responsible for notifying the National Chairman of the Public Safety and Heroism Awards presented by a chapter. Individual chapters may present any of the following awards: Medal for Heroism, Law Enforcement Commendation Medal, Fire Safety Commendation Medal, Emergency Medical Services Commendation Medal, or Life Saving Medal. A copy of the required reporting form is found on the NSSAR website when it operates as it should. 60 Page_2 As I explained in an to each chapter president or representative when I returned from the Spring Leadership Conference, NSSAR addressed my complaints about the website. The official explanation is that the very latest version of Adobe Reader must be downloaded each time a new version is released. Adobe Reader upgrades at least annually. At this point most, if not all, chapters are still having difficulty reporting on the website. If a copy of each award is forwarded to me, I will scan the forms and get them to the National Chairman before June 1, To help accomplish this, please furnish a copy of each individual form, completely filled out, to me by May 30, An reminder will go to each chapter at least a week before this deadline. I can work with forms completed by hand as long as every blank is filled in and is legible. I suggest printing for the forms completed by hand. 65 Sgt. Moses Adams Middle School Brochure Committee Report As of the State Convention and Business Meeting there were 2 entries into the Sgt. Moses Adams Middle School Brochure Contest. One from Black Warrior Chapter and one from Tennessee Valley Chapter. The 1 st place winner was William Paccillo, Holy Family School, sponsored by the Tennessee Valley Chapter. 2 nd place winner was Anne Cain, sponsored by the Black Warrior Chapter. Willian s Brochure has been sent to National for judging. There was a total of 34 Brochures judged by both Chapters. All Chapters should try to get an entry. Our hits to the website continue to increase. We are now averaging approximately 7000 hits per month. The Alabama Society website hosts a blog which picks up Treasurer General Jack Manning s daily history event related to the Revolutionary War. Jack posts an event daily, 365 day a year giving an excellent resource for the history of this era. You can reach the blog daily at: blog.alssar.org. Be sure to refresh your browser if you don t see the latest post or click on the eagle at the top of the page. I encourage you to share this with history teachers, students, and anyone who is interested in the founding of this great nation. I announced at the Fall 2017 BOM that thanks to John Wallace and the late Dick Kemp, I received a treasure trove of old newsletters going back to We now have an almost complete set of newsletters online dating back to The hardcopies of the newsletters are in our archives at Samford University. 80 Report from the Cullman Chapter of the Alabama Society of the Sons of the American Revolution We quadrupled our membership this past year. We recruited many new members by having a SAR booth at our annual county celebration of Veterans Day. We awarded Wounded Warrior Coins to veterans who had received Purple Hearts and did so at every meeting this year. We have presented SAR Flag certificates to local businesses. We participated in the Elks Flag Day ceremony. Our color guard led the Veterans Day celebration and the Cullman Christmas Parade. 83 Report from the Etowah Chapter of the Alabama Society of the Sons of the American Revolution Apr. 11, 2018 The Chapter meets at 5:30 PM at the Western Sizzlin Steak House, Rainbow City, AL, Highway 77, on the fourth Monday of each month except June, July, August and December. Members of other chapters are always welcome to attend our chapter meetings. We usually have a speaker at each meeting, and they cover various subjects of interest to the members, but particularly incidents and events associated with the American Revolution. Officers are: President: Harold Batie, First Vice President: Paul Copeland, Second Vice President: Ben Reed, Secretary: Tom McKenzie, Treasurer: Leon Young, Historian: Harold Batie, Chaplin: Roy Smith, Board Members: W.A. Lewis and Tom McKenzie. The Chapter had 20 members last year and all 20 paid dues for the new year. Average attendance is 8. We present the Junior ROTC award annually to the Gadsden City High School Junior ROTC cadet selected by LTC Carl Harrison and to the Etowah High School ROTC cadet chosen by LTC Suddeth. A senior ROTC award is presented to the Jacksonville State University Senior ROTC cadet selected by the Professor of Military Science.
