POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS, Reels 6-52 and This series contains six subseries detailed below: campaign for governor, 1942; campaign for governor, ; campaign for governor, and n.d.; campaign for governor, and n.d.; Ed Pepper campaign for public service commissioner,1960; and national campaign, The largest subseries are the second, third, and fourth ones, with the remaining subseries consisting of only one or two folders. In the second and third subseries are many letters regarding political patronage. See also series D. Political Correspondence, , and the Governor s files (state government records) for Folsom s two terms in office and for more letters regarding Folsom s political activities generally, and specifically political patronage. Sometimes several letters from a correspondent covering several months were stapled together by the Folsom staff. The date on the top letter is the one used for filing purposes. Speeches CAMPAIGN FOR GOVERNOR, Election results from the Democratic primary 5 May 1942, a map showing how well Folsom ran in 1942, and a biographical sketch. It includes letters from citizens both supporting and opposing Folsom and letters discussing campaign tactics and strategy. Letters from other gubernatorial candidates and candidates for other offices are also present. In addition, political patronage and other matters are discussed. Several county and beat level lists are included, some of which are attached to letters. Many congratulatory letters and telegrams arrived after the May primary and the November general election, as well as the January 1947 inauguration. Murrary A. Battles answered for Folsom often. There are many letters from individuals of different socioeconomic status and from a variety of organizations. Citizens supporting and opposing Folsom wrote to him, and campaign tactics and strategy are often discussed. There are hundreds of congratulatory cards, postcards, letters, and telegrams that arrived when Folsom won the Democratic nomination and when he won the general election. Box 42, Folder 2 Reel NATIONAL CAMPAIGN, This documents efforts to elect Democrats to office in the 1960 campaign in Alabama. Most of the correspondence involves Alabamians. There is also a 1960 address by Gov. Ross Barnett of Mississippi. Box 42, Folder 3 Reel 52 D. POLITICAL CORRESPONDENCE, Reels This series contains many letters from Alabama politicians prominent at the state and local levels. The content of many letters is not obviously political, but maintaining the person as a political contact was important. Folsom specifically attempted to maintain and create contacts to assure his election in 1954, and much of this material could have been filed in series C. Political Campaigns, Campaign for Governor. From May to December 1954 there are many letters to Folsom regarding political patronage and seeking his help with jobs, pensions, social security, pardons and paroles, among other topics. Many similar letters can be found in the Political Campaigns series for both the 1946 and 1954 gubernatorial campaigns. Also filed here are some election returns from Democratic primaries for various offices. Arranged alphabetically by county, and then within chronologically by year and, for the larger counties, by month. Some folders are unarranged. Occasionally letters covering several months were stapled together by the Folsom staff.
