Option A: Mapping Panem You will be using quotes from the Hunger Games trilogy to try and create a unique interpretation of what you believe the setting for Suzanne Collins series looks like. You will compare these quotes to physical and resource maps of the United States to assist you. It is important to understand the following two facts before you begin this project: There are no incorrect answers, you simply will need to be able to explain why you organized the map in the way that you did. You do NOT need to have read the entire trilogy before completing this project. (However these books are REALLY good if you are looking for a summer read). You will be graded in two ways: 1. Do you have a detailed, colored map of Panem? 2. Do you have a description of your map? Rubric - Map: 4 3 Your map includes all 12 Districts. It is neatly colored, has unique details and symbols, and includes a title and key. Your map includes all 12 Districts. It is neatly colored, has unique details or symbols, and includes a title and key. 2 Your map includes all 12 Districts. It is colored and includes a title and key. 1 The map has all of the districts represented, but there is little effort put forth. Rubric District Descriptions 4 3 It has a typed description of each district with claim, evidence, and commentary for all districts. It has a typed description of each district with claim, evidence, and commentary for a majority of the districts. 2 It has a typed description of each district. 1 There is not a description of each district. We will be working on this in class Thursday and Friday only. Your map and description are due on Tuesday, May 13.

Option B: Create a Continent Activity Objective: Your job is to draw an 8th continent. You are expected to show your knowledge of geography and how cartographers (map makers) do their job. Theme: Your continent should reflect YOUR FUTURE. What are your goals? What activities do you see ahead of you? This can be about high school or many years from now. Step 1: Draw a quick sketch of the shape of your future on a sheet of notebook paper. Show this to your teacher and choose the paper for your final copy. Step 2: Starting your Final Copy Use the world map. Choose an area of latitude and longitude that best suits your theme. 1. Decide what type of temperature you want. Warm = close to equator Cold = close to North or South Poles 2. Decide which Ocean you want to be located in. 3. Find the coordinates that you want to be your boundaries for both latitude and longitude. (Example I want my continent between the Equator and 30 S.) 4. Draw on your construction paper IN PENCIL with a ruler your latitude and longitude lines. Lines should be the same distance apart (try 3 or 4 inches). 5. Label your latitude and longitude lines they should be the same number of degrees apart. (Example 25, 30, 35 all 5 apart). 6. Draw over your lines in black ink. 7. Begin drawing your continent IN Pencil Step 3: Decide the customs that make up your culture. Use the landforms on p You should have 5 cities and 10 landforms. Step 4: Place the finishing touches on your continent. Add the tools necessary to read your map (title, key, compass rose, and scale). Add color and name your landforms. Thursday, May 23: Whatever you have finished at this point will be graded as a major grade. Step 5: Complete the attached activity analyzing your continent with the Five Themes of Geography. This will be a separate daily grade. Rubric Map: Your map contains all of the parts of a map (a title, key, compass, scale, and accurate latitude 4 and longitude lines with correct coordinates.) It has 10 landforms and 5 cities with names matching your theme. Your map contains most of the parts of a map (a title, key, compass, scale, and accurate latitude 3 and longitude lines with correct coordinates.) It has 10 landforms and 5 cities. Your map contains most of the parts of a map (a title, key, compass, scale, and accurate latitude 2 and longitude lines with correct coordinates.) but more than one of them are inaccurate. You have 10 landforms and 5 cities. Your map does not contain at least three of the parts of a map. AND/OR You do not have 10 1 landforms and 5 cities. Rubric Description: 4 You have expertly answered the questions provided for the Create a Continent activity. 3 You have efficiently filled out the questions provided for the Create a Continent activity. 2 The questions for the Create a Continent activity have incomplete sections. 1 You did not complete the questions for the Create a Continent activity. We will be working on this in class Thursday and Friday only. Your map and description are due on Tuesday, May 13.

Continent Name: Five Themes of Geography: give an example of each theme as it exists on your continent. Location: A. Relative: : Region: A. Formal: B. Exact: B. Functional: C. Perceptual: : :

The Four Questions: 1. Where is it located? 2. Why is it there? 3. What is significant about its location? 4. How is location related to the location of other people, places, and environments?

The Hunger Games District Descriptions District 1: District 1 makes luxury items for the Capitol. Excerpted from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. (p. 69) The exceptions are the kids from the wealthier districts, the volunteers, the ones who have been fed and trained throughout their lives for this moment. Each was originally associated with a mine or a quarry Excerpted from Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. (p. 192) District 3: For the opening ceremonies, you re supposed to wear something that suggests your district s principal industry...district 3, factories. Excerpted from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. (p. 66) the involvement of the boy from District 3, where they have factories, where they make televisions and automobiles and explosives. Excerpted from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. (p. 219) The main newscaster is reading a piece about a shortage of graphite affecting the manufacturing of items in District 3. Excerpted from Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. (p. 162) Electronic gadgets from District 3. Excerpted from Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. 7 District 12: Our part of District 12, nicknamed the Seam, is usually crawling with coal miners heading out to the morning shift at this hour. Excerpted from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. (p. 4) District 12 was in a region known as Appalachia. Excerpted from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. (p. 41) I realize it s just another disadvantage the District 12 tributes have faced over the years. We don t go down in the mines until we re eighteen. Excerpted from Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. (p. 331). The Capitol: In school, they tell us the Capitol was built in a place once called the Rockies. Excerpted from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. (p. 41) I realize we must be in the tunnel that runs up through the mountains into the Capitol. The mountains form a natural barrier between the Capitol and the eastern districts. It is almost impossible to enter from the east except through the tunnels. Excerpted from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. (pp. 58-9) District 12 is pretty much the end of the line. Beyond us there s only wilderness. If you don t count the ruins of District 13 that still smolder from the toxic bombs. Excerpted from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. (p. 83) Extra Credit: District 13??? I ve been told that they have some sort of machine in District 1 that can turn graphite into diamonds. But we don t mine graphite in District 12. That was District 13 s job until they were destroyed. Excerpted from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. (p. 74) District 12 is pretty much the end of the line. Beyond us there s only wilderness. If you don t count the ruins of District 13 that still smolder from the toxic bombs. Excerpted from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. (p. 83) A mere week s journey on foot [from District 12]. Excerpted from Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. (p. 16) In addition to this map, you can use the following pages in The Nystrom Atlas of United States History: pgs. 8-9: United States: Physical pg. 62: Northern and Southern Economies pg. 76: Mining the West pg. 78: Coal and Steel pg. 116: Regions of Growth, Regions of Loss
