Charlotte Alumnae Chapter Chapter Meeting February 8, 2014 Ceremonial Opening The February 2014 meeting of the Charlotte Alumnae Chapter was called to order at 10:50 a.m. at the Delta Center with a quorum present. Adoption of Agenda The agenda was approved as written. Approval of Minutes The January sorority meeting minutes were approved as written. Recognition of National Officers and Committee Members Recognition of Regional Officers and Committee Members Recognition of Local Elected Officials Hospitality CAC Hospitality Committee recognized visiting Sorors and those celebrating birthdays for the month of February. Correspondence Correspondence was shared by Sondra Hines President s Report Updates Soror Desiree Rew National Level Delta Days in the National Capital was February 1-4, Recognition was given to Sorors Elaine Brown and Mary L.M. Jones for being true examples of being engaged in this event. There were six items of focus. They were Children, Affordable Care Act, Education Crisis in HBCUs, Voting Rights and mid-term elections, Criminal Justice Stand your ground, unemployment extension and district court vacancy. A report is forthcoming from the chapter President about all of these issues. Regional No Regional Updates. Local Last month we reported our chapter was one of the organizations recognized by the Mayor s Mentoring Alliance along with one of our GEMS. A presentation was shared during the program giving details why our GEM nomination should win. Our GEM was not selected. However, she felt really good hearing about herself. The chapter was given a certificate of appreciation.

2 The Iota Rho chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority at UNC Charlotte is hosting Project HERS today. Our South Atlantic Regional and National Officers will be in the city this weekend. Vending will be open and available to Sorors today from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. On Sunday, February 9, 2014, Sorors are invited to hear our National President, Dr. Paulette D. Walker at 1:00 p.m. at the Cone Center. As you are aware, we have a national partnership with the American Heart Association which has extended into a local partnership. We will participate in their initiative starting today called The Heart 360 -Check, Change and Control your blood pressure. Sorors are asked to sign up and take your blood pressure two times per month. You will have a health coach assigned to you to assist with tips and education. We need 50 Sorors to sign up for this program. There will be two times per month you can report your blood pressure at chapter meeting day and at the executive board meeting night the third Wednesday of each month. Sorors can also sign up and check blood pressure on your own and report your data for entry. Committee Updates Amenties Corita Floyd Amenities Summary for February Condolences: Sorors Vivian Cherry, Tameko Sowell, Inez Alexander, Gillian Crosby, Sarah Bellamy. Prayer Request: by Soror Barbara Sifford for an aunt having surgery Sick and Shut-in: Sorors Barbar Jackson, Catherine Haywood, Annie Westbrooks and Harriet Love. Congratulations: Alexis Mitchell, President and Sondra Hines, VP, Print Elected new Board members/ Charlotte Area Association of Black Journalists and Best wishes to Soror Danielle Lyons and Montez Thomas - married on January 4, Soror Tamika McPherson -nominated as Mentor of the Year by the Mayor's Mentoring Alliance. Soror Ellen Flamer - honored as Drum Major for Justice by the West Chester Univ. of Pennsylvania and the WCU Frederick Douglas Society. Soror Shalanna Pirtle, Esq. - recognized as a Rising Star on the 2014 NC Super Lawyer's List. Soror Alexis Mitchell and the morning crew of WBTV - won an Emmy Award/"Best Morning Newscast" in the Mid-South Region.

3 Cotillion Latoya Hatchett he Cotillion is in need of Sorors support. Each year we ask Sorors for a minimum donation $ There are 39 debutants participating this year. If you want to know which debutants are in need of assistance, DOCF finance has a list of names for you to view. A collection will be open at the Delta Center today until 5:00 p.m. Social Action Charleta Wylie On March 22, 2014, we will host a Supporting Survivors and Victims Walk. Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. at Marshall Park and the walk will start at 9:00 p.m. The walk concludes at Bearden Park in uptown Charlotte. Stories of three victims were shared with the chapter for awareness and encouragement for participation. We encourage Sorors to participate in the event and bring 5 additional people. NPHC organizations will be invited and other organizations that assist or support survivors and victims. PP&D Karla Jones, Gwendolyn Devins, Paulina Bolton, Tamika McPherson Community Day will be April 26 at West Charlotte Recreational Center from 12:00 noon -3:00 p.m. This year there will be a blood drive with the community center. As stated earlier today we have a national partnership with the American Heart Association. A heart attack is the number one killer for women. Today, we have Go Red bookmarks, pens and index cards available for you to use and heart healthy cookbooks to give away. Sorors with the sticker under their chair today will receive a copy of the book. On January 18, the GEMS and Academy participants walked in the in MLK holiday parade. On January 23, Kiara Daily was one of the top three submissions recognized and celebrated at the Mayor s Mentoring Alliance award event. A special recognition was given to Valerie Lott, Melissa Deese, Gillian Crosby, Adrienne Sowell and Jaleesa Legall for their hard work and support in the programs. The International Awareness and Involvement committee shared questions to bring about awareness to the programs that fall under this national initiative. There were two questions asked of two volunteers from the chapter. Each received gift certificates to Starbucks for their participation. For those that were not able to sign up to participate in the Habitat Build there is still another opportunity for you to participate. We need volunteers to bring snacks, granola bars, and water. There is a red hard hat for sale for those participating in the Habitat Build. The cost for the hard hat is $10.00 and Delta stickers are available to decorate your hat. Proceeds from the sales will go towards our chapter programs. If you do not purchase a red hard hat, other hats will be provided at the site. The dates for the Habitat Build are February14, 15, 22. Confirmation s will be sent this week to those that were able to sign up. All slots are filled to date. May Week Tara Thompson The following May Week activities were announced. May 13 Family Zumba Night, May 15 Talent Showcase

Nominating Committee Lynetta Chilsom The Nominating committee is accepting candidate profiles for the call for nominations through 11:59 p.m. February 15. We are seeking to fill the following positions: President First Vice President Second Vice President Recording Secretary Assistant Recording Secretary Treasurer Assistant Treasurer Financial Secretary Assistant Secretary Corresponding Secretary Assistant Corresponding Secretary Nominating Committee (7 positions) Internal Audit Chair The slate of candidates will be presented at the next chapter meeting at 3:00 p.m. March 7. Arts and Letters Soror Nettie Lark Today is the last day to place your vote for the meeting to be show during March at the Delta Center. The handout received today with the four amazing black plays requires a correction. Item number 3 should read North Davidson Street as the location. This will be held in the NODA district. Information was shared with the chapter about Alexander Dumas who wrote over 200 plays. One of the plays is very familiar to everyone, the Three Musketeers. Scholarship Committee Karen Eady Williams The deadline for scholarship submissions is February 25. This is open to African American seniors who are in Mecklenburg County Schools. All submissions should be postmarked via US mail. Membership Services Soror Melody Harris Our next Fellowship Friday will be held February 21, at the Delta Center 6:30 p.m. The calendar for Sisterhood month activities was shared with the chapter and certain dates were highlighted. On March 6, we will hold a conference call Bible study. The dial in number and Scripture will be shared closer to this date. March 14, we will have a wine and paint activity at the Wine Palatte. The cost is $ To register for this activity visit the thewinepalettenc.com. You can pay on the website. The studio holds 30 people. March 15 will be the date for Sorority Greek Olympics. We will compete against AKA and Zetas. We want to bring the title back home this year. Please see our team captain, Karla Jones

5 to sign up for participation. March 22, we will attend the Bobcats game. The deadline to purchase tickets is March 8. The cost is $22.00 for tickets and can be picked up March 19. We will worship together March 23, at CN Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian 11:30. Following the service, a sisterhood luncheon will be at the Delta Center. The cost is $20.00 and the deadline to pay is March 8. Lastly, March 28, we will hold dining with Deltas. All sites will dine at the same time. We are in need of 22 hostess sites for this activity. Each hostess will have 22 spots. Each hostess should choose a location and contact membership services. On March 31, we will hold our chapter US Talk session. The next CAC 101 session for Sorors new to the chapter and or returning to Delta will be held on February 20, at 6:00 p.m. n the call to conference 2014 there is an opportunity for regional award nominations. The nominations are for Alumnae Delta of the year and Delta Dear of the year. Forms for nominations are at the membership services table today. Names submitted will be brought to the chapter at the March meeting. Finance Soror Jackson reviewed the receipts from the general operating, fundraising and the South Atlantic Regional Accounts for the month of December In addition, Soror Jackson gave the following updates: Dues can now be accepted without a late fee through March 20. If you do not pay at chapter meeting, dues can be mailed to the finance team mailbox. Payment for participation in the CIAA Brunch is due today. The state meeting is March 7-8 and payment is due today. If you would like to attend the Bobcats game March 8 is the due date. Payment to participate in the Founders West March 23 is $ We will accept purchases for the red hard hat for $ The cost for regional conference is $ Mutsa Kemp reviewed the SAR and Fundraising Account for December Soror Michelle Austin reviewed the general operating, fundraising, and SARA accounts activities for the month of December Announcements Soledad O Brien will hold a Town Hall in Charlotte February 18, We will present her with a small token of appreciation. The Delta Brunch on February 28, at the Mint Museum at 10:00 a.m. is for Deltas only. The cost is $40.00 and the attire is red paraphernalia. Tickets can be purchased from chapter or from the DREF website to purchase tickets electronically. Clarification was given to the earlier question around the Cotillion reports. A report on Cotillion funds is reported to the co chairs and the President for sharing with the chapter. This is based upon the current MOU.
