2 Objectives of this presentation: to explain: - NMANA Governance: Our Mission and Aims - Bylaws - Board Roles and Responsibilities - NMANA Committees -NMANA strategic plan

3 Governance Our Mission: NMANA is dedicated to enhancing patient safety in anesthesia through promoting the professional and educational advancement of the approximately 180 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists in New Mexico. We accomplish this by focusing on the following Aims:

4 NMANA: Aims Promote high-quality patient care Develop and promote standards of practice in Nurse Anesthesia in New Mexico Develop cooperative relationships with other associations that affect the delivery of anesthesia Advance the science and art of anesthesia Provide opportunities for continuing education Provide members with information and direction pertaining government policy that affects the delivery of anesthesia Facilitate communication and camaraderie between CRNAs throughout New Mexico

5 NMANA Governance In order to accomplish our mission and aims, CRNAs created a state association and adopted bylaws for the regulation and maintenance of that association. The Bylaws are NMANA s operating manual. They define: Name and purpose of the association Requirements for membership Size of the governing Board and how it will function Roles and duties of directors and officers Rules and procedures for holding meetings and elections Conflict of interest policies and procedures Other essential governance matters NMANA s Bylaws are available at

6 NMANA: Governing Board The NMANA governing board, or Board of Directors, is comprised of both Officers and Directors. All Officers and Directors are elected by the NMANA membership. Officers must have served as Directors prior to their election. Officer elections occur in even years. They serve for two years. Directors also serve a two year term. The board consists of five directors. Four directors are elected in odd years; one is elected in even years coinciding with the election of the officers.

7 NMANA: Board of Directors Duties of Officers and Directors: Be an advocate for CRNAs with your legislators and encourage other CRNAs to do the same. Attend and participate in Board meetings. Currently, Board meetings are scheduled every 1st Tuesday of the following months via video or phone chat: Jan, Feb, Aug, and Dec. Other meetings may be added as necessary. Participate in strategic planning and assist in the realization of NMANA s goals. A strategic planning session happens once per year at a face-to-face meeting. Travel costs incurred to attend face-to-face meetings may be reimbursed by NMANA. Participate in the annual meeting of the membership typically scheduled in association with the NMANA sponsored conference in October. Give at least 1 day to lobbying in Santa Fe during the legislative session. Lobbying is under the guidance and instruction of our lobbyist. Represent NMANA at at least one national conference per year. These include the Mid-Year Assembly, the National Meeting, and the Fall Leadership Academy. Travel expenses are typically reimbursed for these meetings.

8 NMANA: Governing Board Officers: President - Administrator of the Board. Presides and conducts all Board meetings. Appoints committees and is a member ex-officio of all committees. President Elect- Is elected 1 year into the President s term. This role provides training. The president-elect becomes president at the end of the currently serving president s term, or earlier if the president can no longer serve. Secretary - Takes minutes at Board Meetings and communicates the business of the Board to the membership as directed by the Board. Maintains the yearly calendar, and follows up with assignments made during board meetings. Treasurer- Manages and makes recommendations pertaining to the Board s financial wellbeing. Assists in the preparation of and adherence to the yearly budget, including all other financial responsibilities of the association (ie. taxes,, insurance, etc.).

9 NMANA: Governing Board Directors assist with the affairs of the Board and may serve as members or Chairs of the following committees: Public Relations Membership Federal Political Director Government Relations Committee State Reimbursement Specialist

10 Public Relations The PR chair assists the Board in establishing state PR objectives and priorities. Is the point of contact for state implementation of CRNA week. Currently supervises the publication of the newsletter and other related duties.

11 Membership The membership chair advises the Board in creating objectives for recruiting and retaining membership. This currently includes social gatherings to increase camaraderie and networking amongst CRNAs in the state.

12 Federal Political Director The FPD advises the Board regarding statewide efforts in promoting legislation and legislators that influence CRNAs. The FPD accomplishes this by: coordinating the development key legislative contacts. supporting the AANA effort to develop and maintain a grassroots network in the state. Assisting in development of, and promoting the CRNA-PAC.

13 Government Relations Committee The GRC chair advises the Board regarding yearly legislative priorities and coordinates the statewide legislative effort in concert with the state lobbyist. Conducts regular GRC meetings to plan and implement the legislative strategy. Trains GRC members using the Government Affairs manual Assists the lobbyist in tracking pertinent legislation and councils with the Board regarding legislative efforts. Utilizing the GRC, develops and maintains a grassroots network of CRNAs to advocate directly with legislators regarding pertinent issues.

14 State Reimbursement Specialist Serves as an expert advocate for CRNA value and reimbursement. Strengthens relationships with health plans, hospital and surgery center associations, and medicaid/ medicare contractors to more effectively advocate the value of CRNAs to them.

15 NMANA Strategic Plan Our strategic plan is updated annually at a faceto-face strategic planning session. This session takes place after the legislative session and enables the Board to focus on priorities for the upcoming year. In these sessions, the aims are discussed, goals are set, plans are enacted, and assignments are made to further promote the CRNA profession. See our current goals at
