3 Directions for this lapbook. You will need two folders or one folder and one piece of card stock. First take the first folder and open it up and lay it flat like this: Next fold the two sides into the iddle so it looks like this when opened. The dotted likes are the creases where you folded: Now take your other folder and cut it in half. Keep the part with the tab and cut off the tab. Discard other half of folder. Now you will tape the piece of the folder you just cut and tape it to the folder that you just folded so it looks like this: If you are using a piece of card stock you can tape it here in place of the piece of folder. Tape on both sides of the crease for Durability. Tape Tape Tape

4 Now fold down the piece of folder you just taped down into your lapbook and close flaps. It should now look like this: Now you are ready to put the pictures on the outside of your lapbook. Cut out the United States Governent Buildings, States and Meorials in two strips and glue one onto each flap of the outside of the folder you have just created like this: Now open the flaps of the folder. You will see the piece of folder or card stock that you taped in. This is where the picture of the capital will be cut out, colored and glued. So go ahead and cut out the picture of the capital, color and glue it into your lapbook like this: Tape tape tape tape

5 Now you are ready to start placing booklets into your folder base that you have ade. So go ahead and open the flap that you glued the picture of the capital onto so it looks like this again: The picture of the capital will be glued on the back of this. Above booklet placeent can be followed but you are always free to glue the booklets into the folder as you wish. 9 The U.S. Capitol Built on a hill popularly called Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, the U.S. Capitol has been the hoe of the House of Representatives and the Senate since In March 1792, a design contest was announced to design the U.S. Capitol. All of the 16 plans subitted were rejected. A late entry by Willia Thornton, aateur architect fro the British West Indies, was accepted in fall President Washington liked it because of its "grandeur, siplicity and convenience." On top of the the iron doe, also white, is a statue of a woan representing Freedo, by the Aerican sculptor Thoas Crawford. The height of the Capitol fro the baseline on the east front to the top of the statue is ft (87.6 ). Where is the U.S. Capitol built? What has it been the hoe of since 1800? What happened in 1792?

11 The White House Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC, the White House is one of the ost popular tourist attractions in the country. The White House has been the official residence of all the presidents of the United States with the exception of George Washington. Washington served fro 1789 to By the tie the White House was coted in 1800, John Adas was President. The house was rebuilt and restored after it was burned by the British in August The White House has six floors--two baseents, two public floors, and two floors for the First Faily. Visitors who tour the White House are able to see the ost beautiful and historic roos in the house including the East Roo, the Green Roo, the Blue Roo, the Red Roo, and the State Dining Roo. These roos are used by the President and First Lady to entertain guests and to receive leaders of other countries. The Oval Office is where the President does the business of the country--signing bills and Executive Orders and eeting with staff, visitors, and guests. Where is the White House located? The White House has been hoe to every president except George Washington. Why?

13 The Supree Court Building Located in Washington, DC near the Capitol, this building has housed the Supree Court since Initially, the Court et in the Merchants Exchange Building in New York City. When the capital oved to Philadelphia in 1790, the Court oved first into Independence Hall and later to City Hall. Then when the capital oved to its peranent location, Washington, DC, Congress lent the Court space in the new Capitol Building, until a peranent location was established for the Court. Sixteen arble coluns ay be found at the ain entrance of the Court. Above the entrance to the Supree Court Building appears engraved otto "Equal Justice Under Law", which was designed by Cass Gilbert. Above this otto is a group of nine figures, sculpted by Robert Aitken, representing Liberty Enthroned guarded by Order and Authority. They are: 1. Reclining on the far left is Chief Justice Willia Howard Taft, representing Research Present. He is portrayed as a student at Yale University, and is facing an English crown, a Pope s iter and a Bishop s crosier. 2. Second fro left is forer Senator Elihu Root, who introduced President Taft s bill to create Washington s Fine Arts Coission. 3. Third fro left is the architect of the Supree Court building, Cass Gilbert. 4. The three central figures are Authority, Liberty Enthroned and Order. 5. Third fro the right is Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes, who succeeded Taft as Chief Justice as well as Chairan of the Supree Court Building Coission.

14 6. Second fro right is Robert Aitken, sculptor of the figures. 7. At the far right is John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States fro 1801 to 1835, representing Research Past. He is holding Roan scrolls, and is gazing at an urn, osaic tables and an oil lap, that rest at his feet. On either side of the ain steps are seated arble figures. These large statues are the work of sculptor Jaes Earle Fraser. On the left is a feale figure, the Conteplation of Justice. On the right is a ale figure, the Guardian or Authority of Law. 17 Arlington National Ceetery Located in Arlington, Virginia, Arlington National Ceetery honors those en and woen who served in the Ared Forces. Currently, there are over 260,000 peo buried in there and approxiately 5,400 burials are conducted each year. Arlington National Ceetery contains veterans fro all the nation s wars, fro the Aerican Revolution through the Persian Gulf War, as well as presidents, chief justices, and astronauts. It is one of two national ceeteries under the jurisdiction of the Departent of the Ary (the other being Soldiers and Airen s Hoe in Washington, DC). Approxiately four illion peo visit Arlington National Ceetery each year. Soe of the ore popular sites in Arlington National Ceetery include the Tob of the Unknowns and the grave of forer President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. With his grave arked with an eternal flae, John F. Kennedy is one of only two presidents to be interred into Arlington National Ceetery. The other president, Willia Howard Taft, is also one of only two forer Chief Justices interred in Arlington National Ceetery (the other Chief Justice is Earl Warren). 19 Franklin D. Roosevelt Meorial Located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., the Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) Meorial celebrates not only the life of President Roosevelt ( ) but also events in the United States during his 12 years in office ( ). The Meorial consists of 4 outdoor roos with each representing one of his ters as President: Sculptures in each roo depict events of that tie period, such as listening to a fireside chat on the radio or waiting in a bread line during the Great Depression. Each roo has a waterfall that depicts the struggle of that period as well. Water was an iportant part of President Roosevelt s life. During World War I, President Roosevelt served as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy and, in 1933, played a leading role in establishing the Tennessee Valley Authority, which aied to reduce flood daage, provide electric power, and proote developent. Nine bronze statutes, based ainly on photographs of the President, are included in the Meorial. There is one of a larger-than-life President seated along side his dog, Fala. President Roosevelt suffered fro polio and used a wheelchair, although he was alost never photographed in one. The original design of the Meorial did not include a statue of the President in his wheelchair. However, to depict the President as he really was, a statue showing hi seated in a wheelchair, uch like the one he actually used, was later added to the Meorial. The FDR Meorial is also the only presidential eorial to include a First Lady. The First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, was a strong supporter of the United States and is depicted standing before the United Nations eble.

21 Independence Hall Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Independence Hall was built between 1732 and 1756 as the State House or capitol. At this building, colonial leaders et to plan the future of the new nation. Many of the ost iportant docuents in U.S. history were written at Independence Hall. The Declaration of Independence was adopted here on July 4, 1776 (Independence Day). The Articles of Confederation were ratified here in The Constitution was written here and signed on Septeber 17, Independence Hall was also the hoe of the Liberty Bell for over 200 years. Where is Independence Hall located? When was it built? What happened there? What docuents were written at Independence Hall? Directions for all of the above booklets. 22 The Jefferson Meorial Located in Washington, DC, the Jefferson Meorial honors Thoas Jefferson -author of the Declaration of Independence, first Secretary of State, and third President of the United States. The eorial is built along the Tidal Basin, in line with the White House, other eorials and the Capitol. The Tidal Basin is surrounded by cherry blosso trees. The trees were a gift fro the city of Tokyo, Japan, to the city of Washington, DC The structure of the building is based on the classic style of architecture Jefferson introduced into this country. In the center of the eorial is a standing statue of Jefferson. On the inside walls are four inscriptions based upon Jefferson s writings. They describe his beliefs in freedo, education of all peo, and the need for change in the laws and institutions of a deocracy. Where is the Jefferson Meorial located? Who does it honor?
