In looking for information to develop profiles on individual sailors during the early 19 th century, the key is to look at financial records (such as pension applications) instead of traditional naval records, which are lacking in personal information. Account books and journals of merchant ship captains may also provide a glimpse into how much sailors were paid, where they hailed from, etc. Voices Rising Project 7
