The 811 One-Call system protects underground utility infrastructure, prevents utility service disruptions and hazardous materials spills, and most importantly, reduces injuries and saves lives. Excavation-related damage to underground facilities such as pipelines and electric lines remains a leading cause of utility incidents resulting in death or injury. State utility commissions, along with the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), have long promoted the national 811 Call Before You Dig service as a means of preventing dangerous and expensive dig in incidents. Using the One-Call system can prevent disruption in utility service, serious injury, and death, but it only works if excavators call before they dig. To promote awareness and use of the 811 system, PHMSA provides a number of online resources in support of National Safe Digging Month, including public-service announcements in English and Spanish. The Common Ground Alliance Open Meeting for Tuesday, April 30, 2013 Page 3
25 and others offer National Safe Digging Month templates, logos, PR-campaign ideas, and much more. These resources are available at Please make use of these materials and help get the message out.
