If you would like more information, please contact us at INTRODUCTION Papers of a Republican senator from Missouri, 79th through 81st Congresses. Contains correspondence and notes about such post-world War II subjects as economic adjustments, displaced persons, labor, civil rights, atomic energy, and the spread of communism. DONOR INFORMATION The papers were deposited with the University of Missouri by Forrest C. Donnell on 3 January 1951 and 12 January 1951 (Accession No. 3083). BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Forrest C. Donnell was born at Quitman, Missouri, on August 20, He attended schools in Cameron and Maryville, and he received a B.A. degree in 1904 and an LL.B. degree in 1907 from the University of Missouri. Donnell was admitted to the bar in 1907 and practiced law in the St. Louis office of Seldon P. Spencer from 1907 to He was a member of the law firms of Spencer and Donnell ( ), Spencer, Donnell, and McDonald ( ), Holland, Lashly, and Donnell ( ), and Donnell and McDonald ( ). From 1941 to 1945, he was governor of Missouri and from 1945 to 1951, U.S. senator. He returned to private law practice when he was not re-elected as senator and retired in Donnell was active in numerous organizations throughout his life. He was president of the Association of Young Republicans of Missouri in 1916, president of the University of Missouri Alumni Association, and a trustee of the State Historical Society of Missouri. He was also active in various Methodist Church groups and served as a grand master of the Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Missouri. Donnell married Hilda Hayes of St. Louis in They had two children: Ruth Donnell Rogers and John Lanier Donnell, who died in Mrs. Donnell died in 1976, and Forrest Donnell died on March 3, SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection is divided into three series: Alphabetical Correspondence, Legislative Correspondence, and Subject Correspondence. These series seem to have been established in Donnell's senatorial office. The Alphabetical Correspondence is primarily from constituents, writing on a variety of subjects. The series is arranged by year, then alphabetically by constituent name within each year. The Legislative Correspondence is also mostly from individuals and organizations writing to Donnell about a specific bill in Congress. There are also some notes scattered throughout the series that Donnell used during hearings on certain bills.

( ), Senatorial Papers, Page 2 The material in this series is arranged by Congress, then into miscellaneous bills, Senate Bills, House Bills, Senate Resolutions, Senate Concurrent Resolutions, Senate Joint Resolutions, House Resolutions, House Concurrent Resolutions, and House Joint Resolutions. The bills are arranged by number within each type. Correspondence pertaining to each bill is arranged in alphabetical order by constituent name. The Subject Correspondence is mostly from constituents, but also includes publications and notes made by Donnell. The series is arranged by Congress and then alphabetically by subject. Although arranged into three series, the material within each series is much the same. The major concerns of those writing Donnell were post-world War II adjustments; displaced persons; federal spending, especially in education and social welfare; the United States' position in the world; labor problems; civil rights; the atomic bomb and atomic energy; and the spread of communism.
