3 Intrductin t ESO Epsiln Sigma Omicrn (ESO) is an hnrary educatinal sciety pen t all per-capita dues paying GFWC federated clubs. Mre than 60 years ag, the ESO prgram became a permanent part f the GFWC Educatin Cmmunity Service Prgram. Thrugh ESO, clubwmen are given directin in planned reading fr self-enrichment and persnal grwth. Over the years, many GFWC clubwmen have prfited frm this unique self-imprvement prgram, seen as vital by the members it directly benefits. The purpse f ESO is t prvide clubwmen with a structural reading prgram, which is educatinal and stimulates a desire fr self-imprvement. The fllwing are the gals f the ESO: T encurage clubwmen s pursuit f higher educatin; T create an additinal means t unite wmen in vlunteerism; T develp a supprt netwrk fr wmen returning t schl; T imprve current and develp new study skills; T stimulate systematic hme reading and study with minimum supervisin; T encurage the establishment f hme libraries; T encurage the frmatin f reading/study/discussin grups; ESO can take the frm f the reading grup r an individual s persnal reading pursuit. The prgram prvides membership, awards/certificates, pins, reading lists, and a framewrk in which t pursue cntinued self-imprvement thrugh reading. Many clubs cmbine club prgramming with ESO related activities, such as reading awareness and bk prmtin. HISTORY OF ESO ESO was established in 1928 by the Indiana Federatin f Clubs. In 1930, it was incrprated as a natinal srrity; the Indiana sciety became the Alpha chapter. Later that same year, the Washingtn state chapter became the Beta chapter. Since then, apprximately 35 states have fllwed the lead f Indiana and Washingtn by establishing their wn state ESO chapters. The first natinal cnventin f ESO was held at the 1932 GFWC Cnventin in Seattle, Washingtn. In 1940, ESO gave up its incrpratin as a natinal srrity and became a Special Cmmittee f GFWC. This relatinship needed clarificatin. In 1945, Mrs. Fred A. Bell, then GFWC ESO chairman, appinted Mrs. W.D Keenan f the Alpha chapter as a cnsultant. Mrs. Keenan wrked with Mrs. Bell and Mrs. Meyers, rganizer and first president f ESO, t present rules and regulatins t meet bth ESO and GFWC requirements and t clarify the status f the rganizatin. 4 include ESO as a divisin f the Educatin Department f GFWC. The establishment f ESO was aided by the Extensin Divisin f the University f Indiana. The Extensin Divisin began creating reading curses which gave cllege credit, applicable t a University degree r membership in ESO. The enrllment fee in 1935 was $1 fr ne curse r $3 fr fur curses. The riginal ESO reading curses were cmpiled by the American Library Assciatin, the United States Office f Educatin, Purdue University, and Indiana University. Clubwmen culd chse frm ver 100 curses. Reading curses ranged in subject matter frm American heres t interir decratin t U.S freign relatins. ESO TODAY Tday ESO is part f the GFWC Educatin Cmmunity Service Prgram with clubs acrss the cuntry cntinuing t participate in this self-imprvement reading prgram. Since 1928, ESO has evlved int a diverse prgram with state chapters persnalizing their prgrams based n clubwmen s needs and their cmmunities. ESO members shuld fllw the guidelines f their state ESO chapter. If a state chapter des nt exist, ne must be established befre clubwmen can participate. The rules and regulatins included in this handbk shuld be used as a framewrk fr establishing and administering state ESO chapters. 5 ESO Membership Infrmatin BENEFITS OF ESO MEMBERSHIP Unlike ther GFWC prgrams, ESO exists specifically fr the benefit f clubwmen. GFWC prgrams are traditinally cmmunity imprvement based. Althugh ESO is beneficial t the cmmunity, its main fcus is directed at club members. Reading grups have becme cmmnplace in many cmmunities recently because f their unique benefits. Members wh participate in reading grups are able t experience intellectual discussins n a variety f bks, create new friendships, calesce with varius members f the cmmunity, and gain knwledge abut life, lve, family, plitics, cultures, technlgy, the wrld arund them, and many ther tpics. HOW TO BECOME AN ESO MEMBER Step 1: Cntact yur state ESO chairman t receive yur state ESO guidelines. Many states have their wn requirements regarding becming an ESO pledge and member. If yur state des nt have an ESO chapter, ne must be chartered (please see Establishing a State ESO Chapter). Step 2: Interested GFWC members must first pass thrugh the ESO pledge stage befre they can becme ESO members. The cmpletin f an ESO pledge applicatin (see page 16) is needed befre a pledge can begin wrking twards membership status. The pledge applicatin must be sent t the respective state ESO chairman, wh will begin tracking the pledge s prgress. A pledge qualifies fr membership at her wn pace, finishing in a few weeks r wrking slwly thrughut a lnger perid f time. After prper cmpletin f 16 bks, the pledge receives a certificate verifying her ESO membership. MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES ESO members are encuraged t participate in club prgrams such as: Reading Participating in reading/study/discussin grups Wrking t achieve higher ESO levels Cntinuing t pursue self-imprvement thrugh persnal study Reading is, f curse, the main respnsibility f an ESO member. Once bks are cmpleted, the member is required t cmplete a bk reprt. The bk reprt frm (see page 17) is used by members t express their pinins f the bks they read. The frms are als used by state ESO chairmen. The chairmen must keep track f each member s ESO levels, which are based n the number f bks read. The reprt frm must be cmpleted by each member nce she has cmpleted ne categry (fur bks) and sent t state ESO Epsiln Sigma Omicrn Handbk Page 5 f 18

6 chairmen. Reprt frms will nt be returned. State ESO chairmen will issue certificates and awards based n reprt frms received. ESO LEVELS There are many pprtunities fr ESO members t wrk their way up thrugh the ESO levels. Clubwmen mve t a new ESO level by cmpleting a set f reading list requirements. The reading list is divided int subject categries. T cmplete a categry, a member must read and reprt n fur (4) bks frm that categry. State ESO chapters may have different requirements; please cnsult yur state guidelines. ESO Levels Pledge: A Pledge has btained an enrllment applicatin and has started t fulfill the reading requirements. Member: A Member has cmpleted fur bks frm fur different categries, fr a ttal f 16 bks. She is then eligible t wear the ESO pin and receive a membership certificate. Star Level: A Star level member has cmpleted fur bks frm ten different categries, fr a ttal f 40 bks. She will then receive a Star level membership certificate. Trch Level: A Trch level member has cmpleted fur bks frm 16 different categries, fr a ttal f 64 bks read. She is then eligible t wear the ESO Trch Guard and receive the Trch level membership certificate. Century Award: A Century Award member has cmpleted 100 bks. She can cntinue t the Secnd, Third, Furth, Fifth, and Sixth Century Award levels and will be eligible t receive the first, secnd, third, furth, fifth, and/r sixth century membership certificates. Diamnd Award: A Diamnd Award member has cmpleted 1,000 bks. She will be eligible t receive a Diamnd Award certificate. ESO AWARDS As members mve up in ESO levels, they are eligible fr a variety f pins and certificates. State ESO chairmen are respnsible fr tracking the ESO levels f their state members. Members shuld reprt t state ESO chairmen t ensure accurate ESO level recrds are maintained. ESO certificates (Member, Star, Trch, Century, Secnd Century, etc.) are available frm the GFWC Marketplace ( GFWC (4392) r Certificates can be rdered by ESO chairmen. ESO pins (ESO Member pin and ESO Trch pin) are available frm the GFWC Marketplace ( GFWC (4392) r Members are eligible t rder pins nce they have received the certificates that validate their ESO level. 7 Natinal ESO awards t recgnize utstanding prmtin f ESO and utstanding participatin in ESO will be awarded annually t ne State Federatin in each membership categry. 8 State ESO Chairmen Infrmatin STATE ESO CHAIRMEN RESPONSIBILITIES State ESO Chairmen shuld be active ESO members and are appinted by State Presidents. If necessary, pledges actively pursuing ESO membership can be appinted as state ESO chairmen. Respnsibilities include: Wrking clsely with the state administrative agency, if chapter has an administrative agency. Prmting and distributing the ESO reading list t all ESO members and prspective members. If the state ESO chapter has its wn reading list, the state chairman cmpiles, reviews, and revises that list. Reprting annually t the GFWC Educatin Chairman. Keeping recrds f state s ESO members, including verificatin f ESO levels achieved and number f bks cmpleted. State ESO chairmen receive cmpleted pledge applicatins and bk reprt frms frm each state member. The reprt frms represent each categry cmpleted. State chairmen are respnsible fr tracking their fellw members prgress based n these reprt frms. The recrds shuld be kept in a fashin that can be passed n t the next administratin. Ordering ESO certificates frm the GFWC Marketplace and cmpleting and distributing t apprpriate members. Infrming members f their ESO pin eligibility. Encuraging clubwmen t participate in ESO, prmting ESO thrugh state magazines, newsletters, and thrugh materials prepared fr district, state, and regin meetings and cnventins. 9 Organizing a State ESO Chapter ESTABLISHING A STATE ESO CHAPTER A GFWC member wh is interested in becming an ESO member must cntact her State President t determine if an ESO chapter exists in her state, r refer t the list n page 14. If there is n state ESO chapter, ne must be established befre ESO activities can begin. The fllwing steps need t be taken t charter a new ESO state chapter: Interested members must cntact their State President fr apprval t establish a state ESO chapter. Once apprval is granted, the State President must appint a state ESO chairman wh is willing t take n all state ESO chairman respnsibilities. The appinted state ESO chairman must request a state ESO charter applicatin frm the GFWC Prgrams Department. The applicatin requires the state t uphld the gals f the ESO and participate in ESO prgrams. The signatures f the State President and state ESO chairman are necessary n the applicatin. Upn apprval f the applicatin, the state will receive a state ESO charter, frm GFWC Headquarters, signed by the GFWC Internatinal President and the GFWC Educatin Cmmunity Service Prgram Chairman. REACTIVATING A STATE ESO CHAPTER A list f established state ESO chapters can be fund n page 14 f this handbk. Over time, many state ESO chapters have becme inactive. If a state already has an established ESO chapter, but n state chairman r active prgram, that chapter needs t be reactivated. Fllw these steps t reactivate an ESO state chapter: Cnsult the list f established ESO chapters t see if a state ESO chapter has already been established. Cntact the State President t verify existence f active chapter. Interested members need t cntact their respective State President t slicit apprval t reactivate the state ESO chapter. Once apprval is granted, the State President must appint a state ESO chairman wh is willing t take n all state ESO chairman respnsibilities. The state ESO chairman must request a state ESO reactivatin charter applicatin frm the GFWC Prgrams Department. 11 ESO Fact Sheet THE CREST Bertha J. Lacey, a well-knwn Indiana artist, designed the crest fr ESO in the frm f a shield, the ancient symbl f prtectin. The shield is divided int sectins. The center sectin represents the American hme, with a pathway leading int the wrld f achievement. In the tp left sectin, the rising sun stands fr enlightenment. The palm leaf in the upper central sectin f the shield is the symbl f victry thrugh effrt. The crescent mn at the upper right dentes enlightenment pursued in the night-time hurs f study. The lwer left sectin shws the lyre which is the symbl fr fine arts. The wheat in the lwer right symblizes the idea that we reap what we sw. The lwer central sectin shws n pen bk which represents all knwledge. Belw the crest is the trsade bearing the name Epsiln Sigma Omicrn. The trsade was riginally a wreath f twisted ribbn presented t a crusader when he set ut upn a quest. The dve f peace, which crwns the crest, symblizes aspiratin. THE PIN The ESO pin was als designed by Bertha J. Lacey. The pin is shaped like a kite and is gld, symblizing the desire t increase cultural knwledge. On a blue field which dentes truth, is a half-risen sun bearing the Greek Letters ESO Epsiln Sigma Omicrn. The ESO pin may be wrn by any member wh has met the membership qualificatins. THE MOTTO The mtt f Epsiln Sigma Omicrn is Enlighten Yur Own Pathway, which was chsen by Mrs. Quincey A. Myers and translated frm Greek at the Indiana University. ESO are the initial letters fr the Greek phrase, Epsiln ten sautu hden which translates literally int Enlighten the pathway f yurself. Article II Object The Object f this rganizatin shall be t fster and encurage literary spirit amng clubwmen f Indiana. Article III Membership The membership f this rganizatin shall be cmpsed f wmen wh are members f clubs affiliated with the Indiana State Federatin, and f yung girls wh are members f Junir clubs affiliated with the Indiana state Federatin, as prvided in the by-laws. Article IV Officers The fficers f the Assciatin shall be president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, wh shall be elected at an annual meeting and wh shall hld ffice fr ne year, r until their successrs are elected and qualified. Article V Annual Meeting There shall be an annual meeting f the rganizatin t be held at the time and place f the annual cnventin f the Indiana Federatin f Clubs.
