1 Test Instructions Four Ways to Use the Cloze Tests for Easy English NEWS Print out the tests and make copies for every student. Choose the most appropriate way to use the tests: 1. After reading the article, have students work in pairs to find the correct word from the word bank to write in the blanks. They may check their answers using the newspaper. 2. After reading the article, have students work alone to write the correct words from the word bank in the blanks. 3. Tear off the Word Bank at the bottom of the page before handing out the page to students. After reading the article and having copied and studied the spellings in the paragraph, have students write in the correct words as you dictate the paragraph. Hand back the Word Bank so students can check their spelling. 4. Before reading the article, and before handing out the test page to students, tear off the Word Bank at the bottom of the page. Have students work in pairs or groups of three to come up with words that would make good sentences. (There may be many correct answers in fact, so check their papers for correct grammar.) Then have students read the article and redo the test. Three ways to use Which Word Does Not Belong? Print out the test and make copies for each student. 1. Discussion activity: Have students work in pairs and discuss each set of four words following each number. Have them talk about reasons why three of the words go together and one does not. They each circle their answer on their paper. 2. Word comprehension / speaking activity: Have students work alone and circle the word that does not belong with the rest. Later, go over the test orally, and ask students to give reasons for their answers. Example: Florida, Puerto Rico and New Mexico were all part of Spain. But Spain was the mother county. Or, if they might say, People in Florida, Puerto Rico, and New Mexico are citizens of the United States, but the people in Spain are not. Or they might say, Florida, Puerto Rico and New Mexico are in or near North America, but Spain is in Europe. Or they might say, Florida, New Mexico, and Spain are not islands, but Puerto Rico is an island. If their reasoning is valid, their answer is correct. There may be more than one correct answer to a question. 3. Have students circle the word that does not belong with the others and write out their reasons.
