6 III. Jefferson s Election In your textbook read The Election of 1800 pages Answer question #5 on page 165. Also read pages Answer all 3 questions on page 167. Be prepared to discuss the election and the answers to the questions.

7 IV. Jefferson Takes Office Created less formal presidency. Tried to integrate Republican ideas into Federalists policies already in place. Believed in small government. Began paying off federal debt and cut spending. 7

8 V. Rise of Supreme Court Congress repealed Judiciary Act 1801 Republicans tried to remove Federalist judges by impeachment. John Marshall -Chief Justice made Supreme Court powerful/independent. Marbury v. Madison case asserted the Court s right of judicial reviewpower to decide if law constitutional or not. 8

U.S. Expands West Louisiana Purchase alarmed New England Federalists-worried they would lose influence in national affairs while the West and South would gain political strength through new states Hamilton offends Burr in campaign for governor and Burr shoots Hamilton in duel. Burr plots to create new country in western U.S.-fails. 20

21 X. Rising International Tension Tries to keep us out of war between France and Britain. At first France and Britain fighting helped us economically because U.S. was neutral and traded with both countries. Impressment-stopped ships/seized U.S. sailors and forced them into British navy. Embargo Act 1807-ban on trade of U.S. with Europe but later repealed. 21
