1 MARYLAND STATE FIREMEN S ASSOCIATION Representing the Volunteer Fire, Rescue and Emergency Medical Services Personnel msfa.org Doyle E. Cox Report of the First Vice President to the Executive Committee First Vice President 218 Cambridge Place Prince Frederick, MD Cell Fax doyle.cox@comcast.net December 5, 2009 Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department President Powell, Vice President Lewis, Chairman Carter, Members of the Executive Committee, Officers, Committee Chairs and guest. As I continue to travel across this great state attending the various County Association Meeting, Banquet and MSFA Committee meetings, I continue to listen to the concerns and needs of the member companies, committee members, and individuals. Never the less I am still a student and I continue to learn as I work with President Powell, Vice President Lewis, Members of the Executive Committee and the Past Presidents. Congratulations to the officers and members of the Mechanicsville VFD who celebrated their 75th Anniversary; Chestertown VFD for celebrating their 100th Anniversary and to the Vigilant Hose Company on celebrating their 125th Anniversary. Congratulations to Chairman Douglas Alexander and the members of the Sprinkler Committee for the success they had in Baltimore on October 28th, where their hard work paid off when the ICC Board voted to keep residential sprinklers in the building code. Special thanks also goes to Fire Marshal William Bernard who worked with a lot of the surrounding states in gaining their support. When Doug gives his report later this weekend, you will hear the details as well as the amount of work that is still needed. As you hear in President Powell s report, we meet with Governor O Malley in August. Meetings have also been held with Senator Middleton, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and Delegate Norman Conway, Chairman House Appropriations Committee, where discussion were held on the upcoming legislative session. The President s, Secretary, Treasurer and Financial Secretary continue to meet on a monthly bases to update each on activities that are taking place in the Association. These meetings are very helpful in keeping each on the same page.
2 With the year 2010 fast approaching, each Committee Chair needs to keep in mind that the deadline for submitting your request for next year s budget is also fast approaching. As you may recall from the last Executive Committee Meeting, the Chairman of the Budget Committee requested two funding request. First is what you committee needs to operate and the second is your wished list. In your wish list, list some of the projects that you have wanted to start, but did not have the funds for. As we approach the New Year, the banquet season is with us again. Members of the Executive Committee, Committee Chairs, Officers of Departments or Companies it is time that we start thinking about the number of awards that this association will be presenting during the 118 th Annual Convention and Conference in Ocean City. They will be encouraging you, to go back to the member companies that you represent and encourage them to make nominations for the different awards. As many of you know some of the awards only have a few nominations, let s made a difference this year and encourage all companies to submit a nomination for each of the awards. In addition to the County Association meetings and the MSFA Committee meetings, I have attended the following, along with other Officers of the Association: Anne Arundel Convention and Memorial Service Meeting with Senator Middleton Montgomery County Annual Meeting Delaware State Convention and Memorial Service Howard County Annual Meeting and Memorial Service Pennsylvania State Convention and Memorial Service National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend Prince George s County Convention and Memorial Service Chestertown VFD s 100 th Anniversary Parade Vigilant Hose VFC 125 th Anniversary Open House and dedication Meeting with US Fire Administrator Kevin Cochran Mechanicsville VFD 75 th Anniversary Gala Attached you will find a complete itinerary of my travels for the months of August, September, October and November.
3 With the Holiday Season right around the corner, Cathy and I want to take this opportunity to wish each and everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Years. Mr. Chairman, this completes my report to you today. As always, I will continue to work with President Powell, Vice President Lewis and continue to assist then and this Association where needed. Respectfully submitted, Doyle E. Cox
