1 Tim Malloy, Assistant Director (203) FOR RELEASE: JANUARY 17, 2018 Rubenstein Pat Smith (212) U.S. VOTERS SPLIT ON WHETHER TRUMP IS STABLE, QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY NATIONAL POLL FINDS; PRESIDENT IS DIVIDING THE NATION, VOTERS SAY 2-1 Wide gender, racial and political gaps leave American voters divided on whether President Donald Trump is mentally stable, as 45 percent say he is stable and 47 percent say he is not stable, according to a Quinnipiac University National Poll released today. President Trump is stable, men say percent, while women say percent that he is not, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll finds. White voters say percent he is stable, as black voters disagree percent. Republicans say 89 9 percent that Trump is stable. Democrats say percent he is not stable. Independent voters are divided as 46 percent say he is stable and 45 percent say he is not stable. American voters disapprove percent of the job President Trump is doing. Trump is doing more to divide the nation than to unite the nation, voters say percent. Every listed party, gender, education, age and racial group says the president is dividing the nation except Republicans, who say percent that he is doing more to unite the nation, and white voters with no college degree, who are divided percent. Trump does not respect people of color as much as he respects white people, voters say percent. Republicans, white voters with no college degree and white men are the only listed groups who say he respects people of color as much as white people. President Donald Trump can t seem to improve his approval rating, perhaps because of the troubling fact that half of the voters we spoke to think he is mentally unstable, said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll. The president is a divider, not a uniter, say an overwhelming number of voters, an assessment made even more disturbing by his perceived lack of respect for people of color. American voters say percent the comments President Trump allegedly made about immigrants from certain countries are racist. -more-
2 Quinnipiac University Poll/January 17, 2018 page 2 American voters are divided on the way Trump is handling the economy, as 48 percent approve and 46 percent disapprove. He gets negative marks on handling other key issues: percent on foreign policy; percent on health care; percent on immigration; percent on taxes. Trump v. Oprah In a very early hypothetical presidential matchup, Oprah Winfrey, running as a Democrat, beats Trump percent. Women rally to Oprah percent, while men are split percent. Oprah leads 88 4 percent among black voters and percent among Hispanic voters, while white voters go 47 percent for Trump and 44 percent for Winfrey. Republicans back Trump percent as Democrats go to Oprah 88 4 percent. Independent voters back Oprah percent. But American voters say percent that electing a celebrity to the office of president is a bad idea. In a question in which no opponent is named, voters say percent that they would not be inclined to vote for Oprah for president. These same voters say percent they would not be inclined to vote for Trump. By a narrow percent, voters would be inclined to vote for former Vice President Joe Biden for president. Voters would not be inclined, percent, to vote for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont for president and also turn thumbs down, percent, on Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York. From January 12 16, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,212 voters nationwide with a margin of error of +/- 3.4 percentage points, including the design effect. Live interviewers call landlines and cell phones. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts nationwide public opinion surveys, and statewide polls in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa and Colorado as a public service and for research.
