1 I. Introduction Thank you for your interest in this semester s Central Student Government election. As the University Elections Commission, our job is to ensure that the election runs smoothly and enforce the Election Code. If you have questions or concerns during the election season, please do not hesitate to contact us. This application packet contains all the information you will need to participate in this semester s elections, and includes: I. Introduction II. List of Open Positions III. Election Calendar IV. Information on Accessing the CSG Election Code You are encouraged to review the Election Calendar. Applications are due by March 10th at 5:00 PM EST and must be submitted via to electiondirector@umich.edu. Please note that all candidates are required to attend a mandatory candidate meeting on March 11th, 6:00-8:00 PM in Angell Hall Aud B. Applications will not be accepted if turned in on paper to the CSG offices they must be scanned and ed as an attachment. Best of luck at the polls! 2 II. List of Open Positions A. CSG Assembly: This winter s elections feature the following positions: Central Student Government President Central Student Government Vice President Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning Assembly Representative, one (1) seat School of Art and Design, one (1) seat School of Dentistry, one (1) seat School of Education, one (1) seat College of Engineering, six (6) seats School of Information, one (1) seat School of Kinesiology, one (1) seat Law School, one (1) seat College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, fourteen (14) seats Medical School, one (1) seat School of Music, Theatre and Dance, one (1) seat School of Nursing, one (1) seat College of Pharmacy, one (1) seat School of Public Health, one (1) seat School of Public Policy, one (1) seat Rackham School of Graduate Studies, seven (7) seats Ross School of Business, four (4) seats School of Social Work, one (1)

3 Any student earning a degree in one of these schools/colleges is eligible to run for an Assembly seat representing that school/college. University of Michigan Police Department Oversight Committee: B. Additionally, there will be an election for one (1) campus-wide seat on the University of Michigan Division of Public Safety & Security Oversight Committee. III. Election Calendar FEB. 25 th : Candidacy Application Available o Candidacy applications will be made available. Candidate applications will contain an election calendar, a list of positions to be elected, a copy of rules regarding elections and canvassing in Residence Halls, information on how to access ITS acceptable use policies, and a copy of the Election Code. MAR. 11 th : Application Deadline o Applications must be submitted electronically as a scanned attachment by 5:00 PM EST to electiondirector@umich.edu. Candidates must remember to sign their name (by hand) before scanning the application and ing it to the Election Director, Victoria Allen (electiondirector@umich.edu). o Registered party names will be posted shortly after the application deadline. MAR. 12 th : Required Candidates Meeting & Beginning of Campaign Period o All candidates are required to attend this meeting. o Candidates Meeting will take place at 7:30 PM in the Angell Hall Auditorium. o NOTE: Candidates failing to attend this meeting may be assessed penalties. MAR. 18 th : Candidate s Debate o Debate will take place in the Hussey Room of the Michigan League MAR. 19 th : Last date to remove a candidate from the ballot MAR th : Sample Ballot Released; vote.umich.edu Open for Candidates to Post their Platforms MAR. 26 th : vote.umich.edu Closes for Platform Edits at 11:59 PM MAR. 26 th : Campaign Donation and Expenditure forms due at 11:59 PM MAR. 27 th : Polls Open at 12:00 AM MAR. 28 th : Polls Close at 11:59 PM

4 MAR. 30 th : All election complaints due by 11:59 PM; Unofficial Results Released at 11:59 PM o Election grievances must be delivered to the Election Director by the deadline. o All candidates, current CSG representatives and executives, Central Student Judiciary justices, and the Michigan Daily will be informed of unofficial results by . APR. 6 th : Official Results Announced to Central Student Government* o * Official Election Results cannot be certified and released until all election complaints before the UEC and CSJ have been resolved.

5 IV. ITS Acceptable Use Policies All candidates are expected to follow the Information and Technology Services acceptable use policies. These policies are available at: V. Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities All candidates are expected to adhere to the University s behavioral code of conduct, known as the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities. This policy is available at: Hazing is a violation of the Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities and is also illegal under Michigan State Law. For definitions of hazing or to report suspected acts of hazing, visit:

Affidavit of Endorsement Candidates and parties who seek and/or intend to disseminate or advertise an endorsement must use this form to obtain authorization from the endorsing individual or organization. This form must be submitted via to the Election Director at prior to dissemination or advertisement of any such authorized endorsements. This process serves an evidentiary purpose so as to clarify whether an advertised endorsement has been properly authorized. If you do not complete this form, you may be held liable by the UEC for an unauthorized endorsement, which is a violation of the Election Code punishable by up to five demerits. Request for Retained Counsel Candidates and parties who wish to retain counsel for the election period such that they will be represented by the same student attorney every time they appear before the University Elections Commission or Central Student Judiciary, must complete this form at the time they submit their application for candidacy. Please include this form in the same to with your application for candidacy. If you do not complete this form, you can still request a student attorney at the time a complaint is filed against you or you file a complaint. But if you request counsel in response to or in order to file multiple complaints, we cannot guarantee that you will be assigned the same counsel every time. Student Advocates are paid $12 per hour for cases at the UEC level, and $20 an hour for CSJ cases, with a maximum of $400 per advocate per case. Generally, each party (or by each candidate if he/she is running independent of a party) may obtain only one appointed student advocate. The CSG Elections Code Candidates and parties in the election are encouraged and advised to familiarize themselves with all relevant provisions of the CSG Elections Code, which may be found in Article VI of the CSG Compiled Code on the CSG website at the following link: Candidates and parties are responsible for complying with all pertinent provisions of the Elections Code, and for educating their members, candidates, and volunteers about compliance with any and all relevant sections thereof. Any questions regarding the Elections Code may be submitted to the Elections Director, Victoria Allen, at along with a request for an Advisory Opinion from the UEC. In the event that you request an Advisory Opinion, please include as much information in your request as possible, describing the issue that is ambiguous or otherwise unclear. The UEC will then determine whether it will issue an Advisory Opinion on the matter, or may decline to do so for any number of reasons.
