1 CONSTITUTION OF THE ASSOCIATION OF CORE PROCESS PSYCHOTHERAPISTS (amended February 2008) 1. NAME 1.1 The society shall be known as The Association of Core Process Psychotherapists (hereinafter referred to as the Association or ACPP) 2. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES 2.1 The Association of Core Process Psychotherapists exists to promote and support the qualified practice of Core Process Psychotherapy (hereinafter referred to as CPP), a branch of Psychotherapy informed by Buddhist psychology and developed by Maura and Franklyn Sills of the Karuna Institute. 2.2 Through the Professional Services Contract the Karuna Institute delegates agreed tasks to the Association, including those listed under 2.3. The Association s performance of these tasks and fulfilment of its aims and objectives are monitored by the Professional Standards Committee, in which both the Karuna Institute training wing and the Association are represented. 2.3 The Association s objectives, connected with the above aims, include that it shall be responsible for the following: For the registration of newly accredited Core Process Psychotherapists and for maintaining the re-registration and re-accreditation of Core Process Psychotherapists after initial accreditation For the approval of applications to membership in the light of the criteria laid out in this constitution (see section 3), thereby ensuring that membership confers a recognized status For ensuring that adherence by qualified Core Process Psychotherapists to the Association s Code of Ethics is maintained, and for maintaining the ethical integrity of the Association itself For sustaining the public position and public relations of the Association as a professional wing, in particular its relations to other related professions and the general public. 2 2.3.5 Jointly with the training wing of the Karuna Institute, for representing the Institute at UKCP and related professional bodies. 2.4 The Association shall promote the understanding and practice of CPP by: Providing an information centre and disseminating knowledge about CPP, its standards of practice, and its practitioners (as recognized by the Association) to the general public and professions Holding conferences and other such events to promote the objectives for which the Association is formed Encouraging and facilitating good professional relationships and communication among members Receiving, holding and using subscriptions from annual registration with UKCP, re-accreditation and other proposals, donations, and other property for the promotion of the objectives of the Association Maintaining consistency in attaining the objectives for which the Association is formed. 3. MEMBERSHIP 3.1 Membership of the Association shall be conditional upon application to the committee, whose decision shall be final. 3.2 All new candidates for full membership, and all current full members renewing their membership, shall declare whether there have ever been, or are at present, any criminal proceedings against them and, if so, the reasons for such proceedings. 3.3 Full membership is available to any accredited Core Process Psychotherapist who registers with UKCP through the Association, having established a full- or part-time practice in CPP. 3.4 Associate membership is available to any student of the Karuna Institute who has completed a course of study in CPP to graduate level. 3.5 Diplomate membership is available to any student of the Karuna Institute who has completed a course of study in CPP including completion of the Clinical Year. 3.6 Trainee membership is available to a student of the Karuna Institute on the Clinical Year. 3 3.7 Accredited Core Process psychotherapists who are taking sabbatical leave and are not currently registered with UKCP shall maintain their membership of the Association as Associate members. 3.8 Full, Associate, Diplomate, and Trainee members shall comply with the Codes of Ethics and Ethical Principles of the Karuna Institute and the Association, as required by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy. 3.9 Full, Associate, Diplomate, and Trainee members, apart from those on sabbatical, shall hold appropriate practitioner s insurance cover, including public liability of one million pounds, as a prerequisite for membership. Associate, Diplomate and Trainee members are required to show evidence of clinical contract with the Karuna Institute unless they have previously been Full members Overseas Membership is available to accredited CPP practitioners and graduates of the Karuna Institute who live overseas, provided they meet the criteria for Full or Associate membership as above Full and Associate members may transfer their membership to overseas membership on practising in another country, subject to evidence of adequate insurance cover for the country/federal community in which they practise, subject to having an established relationship with a national awarding organization which would deal with any complaints or disciplinary matters, and subject to their conforming with the legal requirements of said country/federal community Honorary Membership may be bestowed on those who in the opinion of the committee have made a significant and lasting contribution to CPP or the Association Any former member who has retired from practice, and any other person or organization wishing to support the Association, may become a Friend of the Association on payment of a subscription. Friends of the Association will receive a newsletter and will be invited to open events Events other than the Annual General Meeting and ordinary general meetings may be held for different categories of membership and may also be open to non-members. Attendance shall be by invitation from the Association. 4. GENERAL MEETINGS 4.1 The Association shall hold an Annual General Meeting in October of each year. It shall also hold up to three Ordinary General Meetings during the year. Page 3 of 7

4 4.2 Members shall be notified of meetings at least a month in advance. Notification of the AGM shall be sent in writing to all members. 4.3 A general meeting shall be quorate if there are 10 members present including at least 3 committee members and one officer Only Full Members of the Association may vote at general meetings. 4.5 An Extraordinary General Meeting may be called at any time by the committee, or by request in writing of one quarter of the membership or 15 members, whichever is the greater. At least one month s notice shall be given of an EGM, unless there are exceptional circumstances. 4.6 Voting at general meetings shall normally be by show of hands. In the event of a tie, the chairperson shall have the casting vote. A secret ballot may be taken by decision of the chairperson or by a majority vote of those present. 5. THE COMMITTEE 5.1 The affairs of the Association shall be managed by an elected committee of not more than 14 and not less than 4 Full Members of the Association. 5.2 The Officers of the Association shall be the Chairperson, Vice-Chair, Treasurer and Secretary. If for any reason one or more of the Officers posts cannot be filled, or if an Officer should become incapacitated, those functions shall be delegated until such time as an Officer can be appointed. 5.3 The Chair of the Re-accreditation Committee (see 5.9) is an ex-officio member of the committee and is elected by the committee. 5.4 The election of the officers and committee shall take place at the AGM or at an Extraordinary General Meeting, should one be called. Any vacancy that arises during the year may be filled by co-opting a member of the Association on to the committee until the next AGM. 5.5 The term of office for Officers and committee members shall be two years, until the second AGM after election. Officers and committee members can stand for re-election at the end of their term of office. 5.6 Meetings of the committee shall be held from time to time and notice shall be sent to all committee members at least seven days before. 5.7 Four committee members shall constitute a quorum for committee meetings. 5 5.8 The committee may appoint temporary sub-committees as it considers necessary and may delegate any of its powers to these sub-committees. 5.9 The Re-accreditation Committee shall be a standing sub-committee The committee may decide on any question not provided for in the aims and objectives of the Association. Its decision shall be subject to confirmation at the next General meeting Any resolution of the committee shall normally be decided by a show of hands. In the event of a tie, the chairperson shall have the casting vote. A secret ballot may be taken by decision of the chairperson or by a majority vote of the committee. 6. SUBSCRIPTIONS 6.1 There shall be an annual subscription payable by each member, the amount varying according to the category of membership. 6.2 The amounts shall be decided each year by the committee and ratified at the Annual General Meeting or, if necessary, at an Extraordinary General Meeting. 6.3 The membership year shall run from 1 st June to 31 st May. 7. ACCOUNTS AND FUNDS 7.1 The committee shall ensure that proper books of account are kept by the Treasurer. 7.2 A revenue Account and Balance Sheet shall be presented to the AGM each year. 7.3 The books shall be open for the inspection of the Association. 7.4 The funds shall be kept at one of the major banks. 7.5 The funds shall be used only in accordance with the Aims and Objectives of the Association. 7.6 The Association shall pay all expenses incurred by its officers and committee members in the execution of their duties. 6 7.7 In addition to the above expenses, the payment of honoraria shall be discussed at each AGM. If funds allow, honoraria will be paid to the elected officers and to members of the committee carrying out designated tasks such as representation on other committees. The amount of the honoraria shall be agreed by the membership. 7.8 The accounts shall be externally verified at least once every two years. 8. PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT 8.1 Members shall at all times conduct their professional lives with propriety and dignity. They undertake to abide by the Karuna Institute s Codes of Ethics and Ethical Principles, and to commit no breach of conduct that will bring discredit to themselves or their fellow practitioners. 8.2 There shall be a joint Karuna Training/ACPP Ethics Committee consisting of members of the Karuna Institute training wing and the ACPP committee, as well as co-opted members. 8.3 There shall be a joint Karuna Training/ACPP Clinical Support and Supervision Committee consisting of members of the Karuna Institute training wing and the ACPP committee. 9. COMPLAINTS 9.1 In the event of a complaint against one of its members, ACPP shall follow the Karuna Institute s Complaints Procedure until this is replaced. 10. DIRECTORY 10.1 The Association shall publish annually a list of all Members, to be circulated to the membership and to the Karuna Institute training wing. 11. REVIEW OF THE CONSTITUTION 11.1 This Constitution shall be reviewed by the committee every three years to reflect changes in the Association s role and practice. Any amendments shall be ratified at the next Annual General Meeting If it is necessary to amend the constitution at any other time, an Extraordinary General Meeting shall be called at which the amendments shall be ratified. 7 12. WINDING UP OF THE ASSOCIATION 12.1 The Association shall be wound up by majority vote of the members at a quorate Extraordinary General Meeting. All funds and assets shall then be transferred to the Karuna Institute or another relevant association or organization. Page 7 of 7
