2 Table of Contents A MESSAGE FROM KIRKLEY THOMAS Vice President of Governmental Affairs The first electric cooperatives in Arkansas were formed in 1937, just two years after the federal Rural Electrification Act was signed into law. Today, 17 electric cooperatives serve more than one million Arkansans in 74 of the state s 75 counties. From humble beginnings, the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas now have ownership in 14 electric generating plants, own one of the leading transformer manufacturers in the nation and produce the most widely circulated publication in the state, Arkansas Living magazine.
