PART ONE: SUPREME COURT CASE CHART Instructions: Look up each court case. (A good place to start that I recommend is oyez.org). Create a google doc and share it with me when you are done. You may create a chart (but do not use a spreadsheet). This will help you during the course and to study for the AP Exam so create something in a format that will be useful to you. For each case, you need to tell me: 1. Plantiffs and Defendants 2. Brief facts about the case (who is suing who and why? sum it up in a sentence or two!) 3. Court s Decision/Rule of Law (just a sentence or two!) 4. Impact on government policy (just a sentence or two!) 5. Citation (where did you get your information? You may cite to the webpage and insert a link; MLA is not required). Quality is not quantity!! Practice getting to the point quickly. CITE your sources! Assignments will not be accepted without proper citations. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE/CUT AND PASTE! You must write this in your own words. You MAY NOT share your findings or divide up the work amongst several people. Failure to follow instructions will result in an automatic zero and disciplinary offense. By putting the time in to do this now, you will save the time later when you don t have it!! DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!! 1

2 PART TWO: CURRENT EVENT LOG You are to choose ONE current event topic dealing with US Government and/or Politics before leaving school and me your topic. (For example: presidential/political campaign, foreign policy, upcoming Supreme Court decision, etc.) You are to keep a bi-weekly log of news pertaining to your topic (so you should have no less than SIX entries in your log and not all from the same week!!). This is supposed to be a topic you follow for several months so unless something major happens, I should be seeing articles from over the course of the summer so DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!!! Your log should be done on google docs and shared with me by the first day of school. 1) You must locate a current news story from a legitimate news source that pertains to your chosen topic (sorry but the Daily Show, Colbert Report, Oprah, and the Huffington Post do NOT count! Try to avoid editorials, blogs, weather section, or sports pages/magazines!) You should use at least 3 different sources for your news reports (CNN, MSNBC, ABC, etc.) and they can be international (BCC, Al Jazeera, etc.) 2) Complete a short write-up of the article. EACH entry should include a. Title, Date, and Publisher of the article, b. 1 paragraph summary, and c. 1 paragraph explaining how it relates to your chosen topic and/or its impact on US Government and Politics. d.
