1 Photo by John Armstrong Battlefield Dispatch Vol. 35 No. 4 December 2017 ASSOCIATION OF LICENSED BATTLEFIELD GUIDES GETTYSBURG, PA The war has left a great gulf between what happened before it in our century and what has happened since...it does not seem to me as if I am living in the century in which I was born. George Ticknor, American Academician and Hispanist, 1869 As in so many instances in life, sometimes change is good. Sometimes, change works out for the best. The ability to adapt, to adjust, to be flexible, and to successfully confront the challenges presently facing you is paramount in the survival and heart-beat of any successful organization. To attempt the journey of going down the same old road, in the same old way, without having the courage and foresight to veer off on a new path can be detrimental to the health of such an organization. Among the many lessons the Battle of Gettysburg teaches us, is that the unit that did not quickly adapt on the field of battle, that did not refuse its flanks, or properly guard their front and rear, would not last long, only to be swiftly decimated. Perhaps such a time of change and adaptability has finally caught up with the Association of Licensed Battlefield Guides. Perhaps it is time for such a change. As a result of the recent ALBG election, no candidates were officially listed on the ballot for the offices of President and Vice President. The offices of Treasurer, Secretary, and Parliamentarian have been and will remain filled however. The positions of six members at-large on the Executive Council STAFF REPORT remain intact and filled as well. The important point of change here is that it appears through necessity that the ALBG will now be driven, led, and guided by the Executive Council, rather than by the traditional slate of officers from President on down. At this time, the ALBG is very lucky and blessed to have a whole platoon of members who are interested, caring, and concerned about the organization and who are willing to serve on the Executive Council. These individuals are very talented and good in what they do See STAFF REPORT cont. on pg. 2 Engagement -January 24, 2018 ALBG GENERA, BUSINESS MEETING The general business meeting begins at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, January 24 at the G.A.R. Stay safe and warm. God Bless... Steve Slaughter Steve Slaughter President, Association of Licensed Battlefield Guides Bylaws changes to be discussed/voted on at the January Business Meeting The purpose of this bylaws/standing rules revision is to adopt a more suitable form of governance and administration for the ALBG given the relatively short tenures of officers over the past twenty years AND the increasing difficulty of getting candidates to fill the main line positions. Despite many attempts to increase member participation at meetings, attendance has continued to be 10-20% of the eligible voting members with many of those in attendance being the elected officers. Thus, bi-monthly business meetings have continued to be largely unproductive educational events. These proposed revisions would change the governing structure to a Council form which would allow for greater continuity and a more focused sense of purpose, eliminating the need for all but one general membership meeting per year. The remaining months the Council would provide direction and leadership as described in the proposed changes below. Assuming it is adopted all currently elected officers would become members of the Executive Council at a special organizational meeting to be held in February. Additional Council members, as required, would be appointed by the elected members to serve a special one year term in 2018 whereupon they would be able to stand for election for a full term to the position in the November 2018 election. Changes below are denoted by strikethroughs to show eliminated passages, red highlighting to show new inserted passages, and blue, italicized lettering to indicate clarifying comments not part of the final document. Bylaws of the ALBG ARTICLES I-III do not require any changes.

6 6 Battlefield Dispatch Pocket monument book gets massive revision/new look Fred Hawthorne and Dave Joswick have been busily working on a revised and expanded version of the old LBG pocket book Monuments, Markers, & Tablets Location Guide. Veteran guides will recall that this was an invaluable reference when on tour but the last printing was done in the mid-1990s and is long out-of-print. Most ASSOCIATION OF LICENSED BATTLEFIELD GUIDES Monuments, Markers, & Tablets LOCATION GUIDE INCLUDES... The ALBG has also acquired our second reprint surviving copies of the usable guide are in pretty tattered condition. Guides licensed the last twenty years may never have seen an actual copy. The present pocket guide originated as a listing put out by the Gettysburg National Park Commission in This went through a number of revisions by the Commission as additional monuments and markers were erected on the battlefield. After 1921 the list was no longer available until revived and updated again by the National Park Service Office of Planning and Resource Preservation. It was then that it was updated and reproduced it in booklet form and was issued as a pocket guide to LBGs. Former Park Historian Kathy Georg Harrison updated that version and published it during the 1980s both as a pocket guide for LBGs and a commercial version with a color cover which sold for many years in the Eastern National book store at the Park. Fred has revised the entire booklet using all past versions of the book, correcting many omissions, adding missing dates, including many more sculptors and adding markers or monuments placed on the field since the mid-1990s. With the invaluable assistance of Ed Guy, an entirely new front section has been added showing the county origin of the vast majority of regimental companies from each of the twenty-nine states that fought at Gettysburg. copy of the 52 Volume, and 2 Volume Index of the Southern Historical Society Papers, thanks to a donation by Ellen S. 7 The December Globe Hotel Researched and written by LBG John Winkelman, on the taverns and hotels in Adams County and surrounding area. In 1790 James Gettys, the founder of Gettysburg, built a new inn on York Street, reportedly the first brick building in his new town. Innkeeping probably came natural to James as his father Samuel Gettys had run a tavern here since James, whose wife Mary Todd (a relative of Mary Todd Lincoln), owned the inn until his death in William Gillespie bought the inn and ran it until 1851 when he sold it to his son-in-law Harvey Wattles. When the new court house was built in 1859 Wattles donated the clock for the tower which is still running today. In those days the Globe was the headquarters for the Democratic Party where they held their meetings and conventions. On Election Day a Democratic victory was celebrated with a parade through town which usually ended at the Globe for liquid refreshments. In 1860, Charles Will purchased the inn for $4,000 and he was the owner and proprietor during the battle. On June 26, 1863 elements of Jubal Early s division entered Gettysburg. Charles son John thought one of Early s staff officers looked familiar and pointed him out to his father. Charles also recognized him as a man who had stayed at the Globe three weeks earlier and who had asked many questions regarding the farms, the crops, and the financial condition of the farmers, and who had also paid for his meal with silver. When John went up to the officer and told him that he recognized him as the visitor who had stayed at the inn the man laughed and rode away but did not deny it. On the night of June 26th three Louisiana Tigers came to the inn and ordered Will to give them three barrels of whiskey. He refused so they drew their swords and forced him to open the cellar. They Courtesy Adams County Historical Society Courtesy Adams County Historical Society took the three barrels but said they would return in the morning and pay for it. Later that night, a Confederate Major came to the inn and gave Charles a receipt for the whiskey. This probably didn t make Charles any happier but they did keep their word. After the Confederates left, Charles decided to hide some of his whiskey by burying it in the garden along with some groceries. What seemed like a good idea turned out to be a bust as water seeped through the barrels and ruined the whiskey. On July 1st, the Globe did a booming business selling whiskey to Union soldiers as they poured through the town. Business was so good that Will got two of his friends to help out by drawing whiskey out of the barrels into the soldiers canteens. When the fighting started north of town, Union officers ordered the men out and told Will to stop selling liquor. Shortly after, other soldiers showed up begging for whiskey and Will started serving again until he was forced to stop once more by Union officers. After the Union Army retreated, Confederate forces occupied the town, and on July 2nd and 3rd, Confederate officers dined at the Globe for breakfast, dinner and supper. Seeing a good thing, Will raised the price of a meal from 35 to 50 and whiskey from 5 to 10. Amazingly these officers paid with gold and US currency. Will thought that because these officers were from Early s division that they got this money in York. After the battle, Charles Will was accused of Harboring Rebels for serving Confederates. He easily cleared himself of these charges, but several days later was arrested and reprimanded for selling too much whiskey to Union soldiers. In 1864 Samuel Wolf purchased the inn, he added a third story, changed the front of the building, and renamed it the Globe Hotel in On May 30, 1906, the first murder in Gettysburg Borough (at least according to the newspapers) occurred at the Globe. William Eyler and Howard Miller had been drinking at the bar when they got into an argument. The fight moved out to the lobby when Eyler hit Miller over the head with a pump handle killing him. In 1928, the name was changed to the Hoffman Hotel and the facade on York Street was changed. Over the next several decades, it was known as Hoffman House, Sach s Apartments, and Sherman s Store and on March 21, 1968, the old inn was destroyed by fire. Today, a modern building is on the site, only a marker on the sidewalk is left to tell the visitor of the famous inn that once stood there.

Small enlisted on April 25, 1861 in company G of the 3rd Maine Infantry. Before leaving camp, Small was made a Sergeant. In June of 1862, Small was commissioned 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 16th Maine. Small was eventually assigned to staff work though he received special mention for distinguished gallantry displayed at the Battle of Fredericksburg in December Small again received special notice for his brave conduct at the battle of Gettysburg where the 16th suffered heavy causalities. Small participated in all the battles in which the 16th Maine was engaged until he was captured in August Small spent from August 1864 through February 1865 as a prisoner in Danville, Virginia. After his release, he was with the 16th until it was mustered out on June 5, Final resting place of Major Abner Small. After the war, Small married Julia Fairbanks in After Julia passed away in 1885, he married Medora Clark. This marriage produced two sons. Small was head bookkeeper of the Dunn Edge Tool Company. In 1874 Small was made treasurer of the Somerset Railroad Company, eventually becoming a corporate officer. Before he passed away in 1910, Small wrote one of my favorite war books, Road to Richmond, which chronicles his wartime experiences. We are going to stay in Maine but switch to Portland and Evergreen Cemetery and the grave of Major Holman Melcher (6/30/41-6/25/05). This is one of those other guys of the 20th Maine that you do not hear a lot about. Melcher Grave of Major Holman Melcher. served as a company commander during the defense of Little Round Top. Some accounts have him responsible for the bayonet attack against the 15th Alabama. Melcher was badly wounded at the Battle of Spotsylvania and was brevetted to the rank of Major by the end of the war. After the war, Grave of Sgt. Major Asa Blanchard. Melcher became a successful wholesale grocer in Portland and served two terms as Mayor of Portland. He passed away in We are out of Maine and headed to Washington D.C. and the historic Congressional Cemetery and the grave of Sergeant Major Asa Blanchard of the 19th Indiana (1843-7/1/63). At the outbreak of the war he was a resident of Wayne County, Indiana. He enlisted on July 29, During the Battle of Gettysburg after several members of the Color-Guard were killed and See TALKIN TOMBSTONES cont. on the next pg

9 December TALKIN TOMBSTONES continued the Lieutenant Colonel was wounded, Blanchard could not find anyone willing to carry the flag. Blanchard ripped off the standard and wrapped it around his waist. As Blanchard started to fall back, he was struck in the groin and soon bled to death as he was trying to rally the men. Before dying, Blanchard managed to say, Don t stop for me, don t let them have the flag. He is also stated to have said as his last words, Tell mother I never faltered. Blanchard s body was first sent back to Indiana but was eventually sent to Washington D.C. since his father was employed by the government. In July 1863, he was buried in Congressional. We are off to Millwood, Virginia and Old Chapel Cemetery for the grave of Major Mathias W. Henry (11/28/38-11/28/77). The youngest of 12 siblings, his father died before he was born. His mother died when he was seven and he went to live with a sister. Henry was accepted at West Point where his years there were a struggle but he persevered. After graduating near the bottom of his Grave of Major Mathias Henry. class from West Point in May 186, he resigned from the Old Army in August 1861 to cast his lot with the Confederacy. Early in the war as a 2nd Lieutenant, he was assigned to Jeb Stuart s cavalry. Later on, Henry saw service in Stuart s Horse Artillery under fellow West Point classmate, John Pelham. Henry greatly assisted Pelham in delaying the Federal troops at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Henry was promoted Major in early 1863 and served during the Gettysburg campaign. Henry would later be transferred west to serve as John Bell Hood s Chief of Artillery. Henry served during the Atlanta and Carolina Campaign s until he was captured in North Carolina in April Henry spent some time at Johnson s Island, Ohio until he accepted an Oath of Allegiance in July After the war, Henry spent time in Nevada where he became a skilled mining engineer. Never in great health, he passed away of paralysis on his 39th birthday. We are heading back to Bangor, Maine and Mt. Hope Cemetery and the grave of Captain Charles A. Thatcher (?- 11/26/64). I am not a big Navy person but this man caught my eye since I have not found many gunboat captains killed during the war. Thatcher was a Captain in the U.S. Navy who was killed near the mouth of the Red River in Louisiana while commanding the gunboat Gazelle. Brigadier General Daniel Ullman informed his superiors in a letter on the 27th of November that Thatcher who was on shore with 2 men at Raccourci, near Williamsport, Grave of Captain Charles A. Thatcher. was murdered by guerrillas and horribly mutilated. Lt. Commander J. J. Cornwell reported that he seemed to have been murdered simply for his boots and gun. Finally, we are headed back to Evergreen Cemetery in Portland, Maine for the grave of Brevet Brigadier General Charles P. Mattocks (10/11/40-5/16/10). Mattocks was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in Company A, 17th Maine on August 2, He was promoted to Captain on December 4, 1862 and saw action at Gettysburg in the Wheatfield. He was promoted to Major on December 22, Mattocks eventually transferred to the 2nd U.S. Sharpshooters and was captured at the battle of the Wilderness while in temporary command of the 1st U.S. Sharpshooters. Exchanged in early 1865, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery at the Battle of Sailors Creek on April 6, His medal was issued on March 29, He was honorably mustered out on June 4, 1865 and had a long and respected career as a lawyer and judge after the war. During the Spanish- Grave of Brevet Brigadier General Charles P. Mattocks. American War in 1898, he served as a Brigadier General of Volunteers. He passed away in 1910.

The Eisenhower home will be decorated for Christmas, December 1 through 31, Inc. The Eisenhower nativity dioramas, exhibited in the East Room of the White House during his presidency, will be on display in the lobby of the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center. Mamie Eisenhower loved to decorate their only home for Christmas. As White House Chief Usher J. B. West said, Mamie Eisenhower decked the halls with more than holly. Her hand is evident in the home s recreated decorations, complete with mistletoe, wreaths, and poinsettias. A brightly lit, See EISENHOWER cont. on page 10

11 December EISENHOWER continued from page 9 candy cane-covered Christmas tree surrounded by presents illuminates the living room. A life-sized Santa Claus enlivens the casual atmosphere of the Eisenhowers porch while, in the kitchen, gifts of sugar cookies and plum pudding await the arrival of the Eisenhower grandchildren. The dining room table is set for Christmas dinner and the Eisenhowers Christmas records playing in the background add to the holiday atmosphere. First Lady Mamie Eisenhower owned a set of Christmas china made in England for sale in Plummer Ltd., a New York City store that went out of business in It was a large set with service for 24 and had an image of a decorated Christmas tree with presents underneath on all the pieces. Several pieces of this Christmas china can be seen on display on the dining room table in the Eisenhower Home from December 1 through 31. The set also includes serving pieces. The platter and serving bowl have the same maker s mark as the place setting. Mrs. Eisenhower later gave her set of Christmas china to her daughter-in-law Barbara Eisenhower, likely in the 1970s. In a 1983 interview, Barbara said, I love that Christmas china. It s that one that was made by Plummer s in New York and it s just a little Christmas tree very old-fashioned. The Eisenhowers specially designed White House Christmas cards are on exhibit, along with Christmas gift prints of the President s paintings. One of the original decorations from the first family on display is a 1950s handmade Christmas shadow box. Park interpreters are on hand to share Eisenhower family recollections of Christmas in Gettysburg. The Eisenhowers displayed three Nativity dioramas in the East Room of the White House that were gifts from Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn. Handcrafted by artists Winfred S. Hyatt and Hanna Weil Fischer-Binder with additional work by Bryn Athyn Studios of Building & Architectural Arts run by Mr. Pitcairn, the first diorama depicting the manger scene was presented to the Eisenhowers in In 1957, two additional scenes depicting the shepherds and wise men were crafted and presented. The dioramas remained on exhibit each year through 1960, the Eisenhowers last Christmas in the White House. Before leaving the White House, Mrs. Eisenhower gave the dioramas to the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church. The church displayed them each year at Christmas until they renovated in Donated to the Eisenhower National Historic Site, the dioramas were displayed annually until one was damaged in Thanks to a generous donation by the Gettysburg Foundation and others, the repaired and conserved dioramas will be exhibited as they were at the Eisenhower White House. Courtesy of Eisenhower National Historic Site. The Eisenhower National Historic Site is open daily with shuttle buses leaving the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Admission is $9.00 for adults and $5.00 for youth ages 6-12; children age 5 and under are admitted free. 12 December A Christmas Carol s Civil War Origin by Douglas Ullman, Jr. I heard the bells on Christmas Day Their old, familiar carols play, and wild and sweet The words repeat Of peace on earth, good-will to men! And thought how, as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom Had rolled along The unbroken song Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Till ringing, singing on its way, The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime, A chant sublime Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Then from each black, accursed mouth The cannon thundered in the South, And with the sound The carols drowned Of peace on earth, good-will to men! It was as if an earthquake rent The hearth-stones of a continent, And made forlorn The households born Of peace on earth, good-will to men! And in despair I bowed my head; There is no peace on earth, I said; For hate is strong, And mocks the song Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Print depicting a winter scene at Henry Wadsworth Longfellow s home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Library of Congress I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day has been a popular Christmas carol since the first musical version appeared in Originally a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the text was set to music by John Baptiste Calkin and has been recorded by the likes of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. A subsequent musical version penned by Johnny Marks in the 1950s became popular thanks in large part to the talents of Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Sarah McLachlan, and others, who have made Marks version the most commonly heard setting of Longfellow s text. Charles Appleton Longfellow National Park Service Unbeknownst to many a Christmas caroler, Longfellow s poem has its roots in the American Civil War. Longfellow wrote the piece on Christmas Day in Nine months earlier his son, Charles Appleton Longfellow, snuck away from home and enlisted in the Federal army in Washington, D.C. The younger Longfellow excelled in his training and received a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry in time to take part in the Chancellorsville campaign. He was ill during the Gettysburg campaign, but returned to duty in the fall of While at dinner on December 1, 1863, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow received a telegram. His son had been severely wounded in a skirmish on November 27, A bullet entered Charles left shoulder, passing through his back and clipping the spine before exiting the under the right shoulder Henry Wadsworth Longfellow at work in his study. Library of Congress blade. The elder Longfellow immediately set out for Washington, arriving there on December 3. After two more days of waiting, Charles arrived by train in the nation s capital. According to the poet, [t]he army surgeon who came with the wounded alarmed me by saying that his duty to himself and to me required him to say that the wound was very serious one and paralysis might ensue. That evening, three more surgeons gave another more favorable report. Charles will be long in healing, but he it will be at least six months before he can return to the service. In fact, though Charles survived his wound, his military career was over. In summarizing the ordeal to a friend, the Henry Longfellow wrote, I have been through a great deal of trouble and anxiety. This trouble and anxiety is evident in the lines of the poem, Christmas Bells the basis for the popular Christmas carol. Article from Civil War Trust website;
