1 COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA Legislative Journal MONDAY, JANUARY 23, 2017 SESSION OF ST OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY No. 2 SENATE MONDAY, January 23, 2017 The Senate met at 1 p.m., Eastern Standard Time. The PRESIDENT (Lieutenant Mike Stack) in the Chair. PRAYER The Chaplain, Reverend A.J. BRILEY, SR., Pastor of Second Baptist Church, Harrisburg, offered the following prayer: And all of the people of God said, Amen. Our Father and our God, we praise You for Your goodness of our nation, giving us blessings far beyond what we deserve. Yet we know that all things work together for the good. We deeply need moral and spiritual renewal to help us meet the many problems we face. Convict us of our sins. Help us to turn to You in repentance and faith. Set our feet on a path of righteousness and peace. We pray today for our nation's leaders. Give them the wisdom to know what is right and the courage to do it. You have said blessed is a nation whose God is the Lord. May this be a new era for America as we humble ourselves and acknowledge You alone as our savior and Lord. This we pray as the time is approaching for the embarkment of a new reign, a new government and power, a government that was voted by us, the people of the United States of America, and we must stand united to respect who we have and the ones whom we have placed to govern. Do not be counted as divided. As we know, a divided house will not stand. No different than anyone else than any of you. We each have been given a purpose, a calling. Take our lives and meaningful hearts, a calling to be a pastor, or calling to be placed in a position of leadership for the people and by the people. The Bible surely speaks of how we, the people, are to behave toward government. The word says let every person be subject to the governing authorities. There is no authority except from God, and those who exist have been instituted by God. Therefore, whosoever resist authorities, resist what God has appointed. Be subject, for the Lord's sake, every human institution, whether it be the emperor as supreme, or the governor, sent with the purpose to do good rather than evil, to praise those who do good. This is the will of God. Scripture tells us that we are to be subject to honor, to do good, and to be about a good work for the people. We ask that You take these particular decrees that have gone forth, use them, Thy people at large, and we will be careful always to give Thy matchless name the praise. We ask it always in Him. The people of God say together, Amen. The PRESIDENT. The Chair thanks Pastor Briley, who is the guest today of Senator DiSanto.
