8 Attachment #2 SETON HALL UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW Law Students for Reproductive Justice Proposal To: Student Bar Association From: Law Students for Reproductive Justice, Seton Hall Re: Provisional Status Date: February 25, 2012 Law Students for Reproductive Justice ( LSRJ ), Seton Hall Chapter seeks provisional status with the Student Bar Association ( SBA ) at Seton Hall Law. The following proposal demonstrates that the group s purposes can be achieved with clearly established goals and minimal financial support from the school. I. Purpose The purpose of LSRJ Seton Hall is to help law students get educated about, and get involved with this vital and ever-changing area of law. Reproductive justice is a field that is very much in the public eye at the moment, especially with the upcoming elections, and encompasses a range of issues being litigated in courts across the country. As an organization, we hope to help our fellow law students learn about the issues, and find ways to get involved, both in the legal community, as well as the community at large. Law Students for Reproductive Justice educates, organizes, and supports law students to ensure that a new generation of advocates will be prepared to protect and expand reproductive rights as basic civil and human rights. II. Goals LSRJ Seton Hall has several goals to help us achieve our purpose: Meetings: We plan to have one general meeting each semester to give our members an idea of what we are doing, both on a large scale and specifically each semester. These general meetings will also give non-members a chance to attend and see what LSRJ Seton Hall is about, if they are interested in joining. These meetings would be held in the early evenings to make them available to all students. We want to have as many people involved as intimately with the group as possible! We may also have smaller, more focused meetings throughout the school year for organizational purposes, if event planning so requires. Tabling: LSRJ Seton Hall would have a table at the Student Organization events each semester to raise awareness both about the group and about the issues. We would have general information flyers and maybe even some LSRJ promotional materials (stickers, buttons, etc.). Events: The national office has many pre-planned events, and we would try to do a few events each year, both to raise money for the organizations needs as well as to address a 8
9 given topic or specific event (e.g. passage of relevant legislation.) Some examples include: o Reproductive Justice 101: the Fundamentals o Pro-faith Pro-choice Pro-claim! o Maternal and Infant Mortality Here and Abroad o It s All About Power & Control: Intimate Partner Violence & Reproductive Oppression As you can see, there is a wide range of topics to be covered, and there is clear overlap with the target area of other student groups (e.g. Women s Law Forum, Family Law Society). We would be delighted to partner with similarly interested organizations in an effort to put on the best events possible. Panel Discussions: Together with other health- and human rights-oriented organizations, we would organize panel discussions on relevant issues. As a chapter of a national organization, we would be able to use the national office s connections to bring experts in the field to Seton Hall Law. III. Needs LSRJ seeks the following funding for its first year: The standard $200 allowance for the general meetings allowed for each organization. 9
10 Model Bylaws/Constitution Preamble Law Students for Reproductive Justice is a student-led, student-driven national non-profit network of law students, professors, and lawyers committed to fostering the next wave of legal experts for the reproductive justice movement. Mobilizing and mentoring new lawyers and scholars is a long-term strategy that will build capacity, vision, and leadership for a more successful reproductive justice movement. Law functions as both a catalyst to prompt the expansion of rights and a tool with which to hold governments and communities accountable for the delivery of liberty, equality, dignity, and fairness promised by those rights. Reproductive justice will be achieved when all people and communities have access to the information, resources, and support they need to attain sexual and reproductive selfdetermination. We dedicate ourselves to ensuring access to medically accurate, ageappropriate, culturally competent sex and sexuality education, as well as comprehensive, quality reproductive healthcare, including prenatal care, postnatal care, contraception, abortion services, and alternative reproductive technologies for women and men, free from coercion, discrimination and violence. Today, a growing number of law schools offer comprehensive courses in reproductive rights law, but opportunities for professional training remain scarce. As individuals, each of us faces difficulties obtaining the education and training we need to become strong, successful advocates for reproductive justice. Together, we can change this situation and become a powerful, educated force that defends and expands reproductive rights in the United States and around the world. Article I: Name & Purposes 1.
