The Chairperson submits for the approval of the Commission the draft timetable of work (annexed hereto), which has been drawn up in conformity with the recommendations formulated by the Executive Board and approved by the General Conference concerning the organization of the work of the 34th session (34 C/2 and Add. and Add. 2). 2. The Commission will examine nine s on the agenda of the General Conference s 3.1, 3.2, 4.2 (Major Programme I Education), 5.3, 5.4, 5.11, 5.14, 5.15 and The Chairperson proposes to organize the Commission s work into five debates: The first debate will be devoted to 3.1 Consideration and adoption of the Draft Medium-Term Strategy for (34 C/4). This will be followed by the second debate on 4.2 Consideration and adoption of the Draft Programme and Budget for , Major Programme I Education (34 C/5) including its proposed resolutions, the recommendations by the Executive Board and the draft resolutions submitted by Member States. - The third debate will examine 5.3 Implementation of 33 C/Resolution 70 concerning educational and cultural institutions in the occupied Arab territories; 8.6 Results of the Seventh Consultation of Member States on the implementation of the Convention and the Recommendation against Discrimination in Education (1960); and 5.15 Amendment to the Statutes of the Intergovernmental Regional Committee for the Regional Education Project for Latin America and the Caribbean (PRELAC). The fourth debate will be on 5.4 Report by the Director-General on the work accomplished on education for all (EFA); 5.11 Enhancing the Teacher Training

2 page 2 Initiative in Sub-Saharan Africa (TTISSA); and 5.14 Further promotion of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. The fifth and final debate will be on 3.2 Preparation of the Draft Programme and Budget for (35 C/5). 4. At the conclusion of each debate, the representatives of the Director-General will reply to any questions raised by the delegates. 5. The Chairperson wishes to point out that the Communiqué of the Ministerial Round Table on Education and Economic Development will be presented on Monday morning, 22 October. Following the presentation, the Chairperson will give the floor to the Chairpersons of UNESCO s education institutes, who will present their reports on activities during Each presentation will last not more than seven minutes. 6. As shown in the attached timetable, the documents to be considered include: the Draft Medium-Term Strategy for , the Draft Programme and Budget for and the Executive Board recommendations for both of these; documents concerning s that require action by the Commission; documents transmitted for information; reports; and draft resolutions. With regard to the draft resolutions concerning s other than 4.2, the timetable may be incomplete if additional proposals are submitted within the time limit for consideration by the Commission. The Director-General s observations on the draft resolutions submitted by Member States and deemed admissible are found in document 34 C/8/COM.ED. 7. The Commission will adopt its report at its final meeting on Saturday morning, 27 October. This final meeting will be held exceptionally in Room IV. 8. In presenting this timetable, the Chairperson would like to remind delegates of the volume and importance of the task ahead of them and the need to complete their work by the end of the afternoon on 24 October, the Commission s sixth meeting. Any delay to this timetable would require the Commission to hold extended meetings, which should be avoided as far as possible. 9. The Chairperson has decided that individual interventions will be strictly limited to a maximum of five minutes for 4.2 Consideration and adoption of the Draft Programme and Budget for , and two to three minutes for all other debates. The Chairperson takes this opportunity to point out that if the examination of any takes less time than foreseen, he will immediately start the debate on the next question. He also proposes that s 5.3, 5.15 and 8.6 be adopted without debate. He wishes to highlight that s 5.3 and 8.6 have already been discussed extensively by the Executive Board at its 177th session, 10. In order to facilitate the organization of the work, delegates are kindly asked to sign up in advance on the relevant list of speakers. The lists of speakers for all the debates will be available at the documents distribution window located on the left side at the front of the meeting room. The list of speakers for each debate will be closed after the intervention of the third delegate.
