SET FORTH THE RATIONALE FOR THIS PROPOSAL: This course is a foundational course for the Victim Studies Minor program. Course description: Examines the complicated nature and dynamics of interpersonal violence. Presents a general overview of interpersonal violence, such as definitions, characteristics, and theoretical models; and various sources of data on interpersonal violence and measurement issues. Provides the historical development and evolution of the multidisciplinary response to interpersonal violence including law enforcement response, specialized courts, and treatment programs; civil actions; and the role of community and human service agencies. Current issues and innovations related to interpersonal violence are integrates throughout the course. Summer

LEARNING GOALS Upon successful completion of the course students will (1) understand the nature, extent, and characteristics of interpersonal violence victimization, offending, and the victim/offender overlap; (2) recognize the various sources of data on interpersonal violence and the issues related to definitions and measurement; (3) have the ability to identify different types of interpersonal violence and appreciate the intersections and consequences this violence; (4) understand the evolving criminal justice system response to interpersonal violence; and (5) appreciate the resources for and responses to interpersonal violence by non-criminal justice system agencies/actors. 15. ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES Students will be assessed through exams, critical thinking/writing assignments (e.g., policy analyses, program evaluations, needs assessments), and group work (e.g., reading reflections, discussion questions). 16. SUGGESTED TEXT(S) and MATERIALS (e.g. textbooks, equipment, software, etc., that students must purchase): In lieu of a textbook, this course will utilize a series of reports and research articles presenting both seminal studies and the most current research on interpersonal violence.
